  • It earns 5X Membership Rewards® points on flights booked directly with airlines or through American Express Travel, on up to $500,000 of those purchases per calendar year, 5X on prepaid hotels booked on AmexTravel.com, and 1X on other purchases. [1]

How much does the American Express Platinum Card cost?

The annual fee for the Platinum Card® is $895 for a Basic Card, and each Additional Platinum Card carries a $195 annual fee. [1] Companion Platinum Cards have no annual fee. [1] Those figures appear on the US card page and apply to that product; other Platinum cards sold in other markets are separate products.

The card charges no foreign transaction fees. [1] It also has no Preset Spending Limit, so the amount you can spend adapts to factors such as purchase, payment and credit history, although American Express says it may assign a specific spending limit to an account in certain cases and will notify the Card Member if it does. [1]

How do you earn Membership Rewards points with the Platinum Card?

The card earns 5X Membership Rewards® points on flights purchased directly from airlines or through American Express Travel®, capped at $500,000 of those purchases per calendar year. [1] It earns 5X points on prepaid hotels booked through American Express Travel, and 1X points on all other purchases. [1] These are the card-specific earn rates; the underlying programme terms set a base rate for eligible purchases for enrolled cards. [5]

The Membership Rewards® terms define an eligible purchase as a purchase of goods and services on the card minus returns and other credits, and exclude cash advances and cash equivalents including gift cards, person-to-person transactions, balance transfers, traveler's checks, purchases or reloading of prepaid cards, fees, interest charges and foreign exchange fees. [5] Points are earned only if the minimum amount due on the account is paid on time. [5] The glossary covers the wider vocabulary of earning and redeeming points.

Lounge access sits in The Global Lounge Collection®, which American Express describes as more than 1,550 airport lounges as of January 2026 and as over $850 of annual value. [1] Access covers Centurion Lounges, 10 Delta Sky Club visits when flying on an eligible Delta flight, Priority Pass membership with enrollment required, and other select partner lounges. [1] The card page also lists hotel status benefits: Marriott Bonvoy® Gold Elite status, complimentary enrollment in Hilton Honors™ Gold status, and Leaders Club Sterling status from The Leading Hotels of the World® with enrollment required. [1]

Can you transfer Membership Rewards points to airlines and hotels?

American Express says it offers the opportunity to transfer points to 20 airline and hotel travel partners. [1] Before transferring, you must link your Rewards Account with the partner loyalty programme account, and that account must be in your name or in the name of an Additional Card Member whose card was issued at least 90 days before the link. [4] [5] In most cases the minimum transfer is 1,000 points, in multiples of 1,000. [4] Processing typically takes 48 hours, though some programmes delay posting points to the partner account. [4]

Transfer rates vary by partner, and the partner programme's own terms and conditions apply once the points arrive. [4] [5] A transfer cannot be reversed, and transferred points cannot be converted back into Membership Rewards points. [4] Points sent to a U.S. airline frequent flyer programme carry an excise tax offset fee of $0.0006 per point, capped at $99, which American Express says may be more or less than the tax it actually pays on an individual transfer. [4] [5]

Exceptions and limits

  • Several credits require enrollment before they pay out: the Resy, Digital Entertainment, lululemon, Oura Ring and Equinox credits, Priority Pass membership and Hilton Honors Gold status. [1]
  • The hotel credit applies only to prepaid bookings made through American Express Travel, The Hotel Collection requires a stay of at least two nights, and certain room categories are not eligible for upgrades. [1]
  • The airline fee credit applies to incidental fees from one selected qualifying airline; American Express relies on airlines to submit correct transaction information, and qualifying airlines are subject to change. [1]
  • Delta Sky Club entry under this benefit is limited to 10 visits and only applies when flying on an eligible Delta flight. [1]
  • If points from a billing period were not earned because the minimum amount due was paid late, they can be requested afterwards for a fee for each billing period and each Card Account, within 12 months of that billing period. [5]
  • Points are lost if American Express cancels a product, and you lose all points immediately if you cancel or unenroll your last linked product; if the account is cancelled for inactivity, you have 90 days to use the points. [5] Points are not the Card Member's property and cannot be transferred to someone else's Rewards Account, sold, or passed on through divorce, inheritance or bankruptcy. [5]
  • If an airline loyalty programme stops participating, American Express may limit how many points can be transferred to it before participation ends, at a limit of at least 100,000 points. [4] A flight booked with frequent flyer miles is not charged to the card, so card insurance and other charge-related benefits may not apply to it. [4]
  • New York Card Members can continue to use points for 90 days in the scenarios the programme terms mark, by calling the number on the back of the card. [5]
