PROGRAMME PROFILE
ANA Mileage Club cards: rules, miles and family use
ANA Mileage Club membership cards are the cards ANA issues to members to show their AMC membership, and the programme rules group them into three kinds: the AMC card, the ANA credit card and co-branded cards. [4] Miles earned under the programme are valid from the month in which the qualifying goods or service were used until the end of the month that comes 36 months later, measured in Japan time. [4]

Key takeaways
- The rules recognise three card categories: the AMC card, issued by ANA alone; the ANA credit card, issued jointly with a credit card company and carrying the ANA CARD name on the front; and co-branded cards issued jointly with a partner company, a definition that includes electronic cards. [4]
- Miles are recorded in a Mileage Club mileage account, and ANA sets — and may change — the flights, booking classes, fares and accrual rates that qualify. [4]
- An ANA credit card or co-branded card application is screened by the card company or co-brand partner at the same time as ANA reviews the Mileage Club membership application. [4]
- Miles expire at the end of the month 36 months after the month of use, Japan time, and pooling family miles needs a registration that depends on where the member lives. [4] [5]
What cards does ANA Mileage Club issue?
ANA Mileage Club treats its cards as a family rather than a single product. The membership rules use one term for all the cards issued to members to show their AMC membership, and list three kinds inside it: the AMC card, which ANA issues alone; the ANA credit card, which ANA issues jointly with a credit card company and which carries the ANA CARD name printed on the front; and co-branded cards, which ANA issues jointly with a partner company. Electronic cards fall within the co-branded definition. [4]
Two approvals run side by side. ANA reviews the membership application and opens the mileage account, while the credit card company or the co-brand partner screens the card application at the same time; membership itself begins when ANA accepts the application and opens the account. [4] Day-to-day handling follows the same split: the card belongs to ANA and any co-issuer, is for the member's own use, and must be signed if it carries a signature panel. [4] A replacement after loss, theft, damage or soiling is issued only after approval, including screening by the card company, and a replacement fee applies. [4]
How are ANA Mileage Club miles earned?
Miles are credited to the Mileage Club mileage account, and the rules set out the conditions for that. ANA may adjust the eligible flight segments, cabin classes, booking classes, fares and accrual rates at any time. [4] For spending with partner companies, members earn according to the partner's own rules, and the partner may change which goods and services qualify at any time. [4] ANA may also decide, and change without notice, the content of awards, the number of miles accrued, the accrual conditions and the miles required for an award; those conditions are not part of the membership rules. [4] ANA's Mileage Club pages promote the ANA Card on the basis that miles accrue on everyday shopping as well as on air tickets. [6]
Credit has to reach the account before it can be spent, because the rules require miles to be recorded in the member's mileage account before an award can be requested. [4] Where a member already held membership on the date of the flight or of the partner purchase but the miles were not recorded automatically, a retroactive claim can be made within six months of that date using ANA's procedure; cases handled through screening by ANA and the card company are excepted, and a partner's own deadlines may differ. [4] Disputes about whether miles were credited correctly can be raised within the same six months, with evidence such as a boarding pass or a receipt. [4]
Two limits apply across the card categories. Only one mileage account is allowed and a single purchase cannot be credited twice; ANA may merge duplicate accounts into one and may correct a double credit without notifying the member. [4] Miles also cannot be shared, combined or transferred with points from partner companies or airlines, and if a partner purchase is later cancelled or refunded, ANA may cancel miles that were already credited. [4]
Who is responsible for what: ANA or the partner?
ANA's terms draw a line between the programme and its partners. Goods and services supplied by partner companies are provided by those companies, and ANA does not guarantee their quality, fitness for purpose, up-to-dateness or accuracy. [4] When a member uses a partner award, the partner's conditions apply, but the application, changes, cancellation and refund follow ANA's conditions. [4]
| Task | Handled under |
|---|---|
| Earning and spending Mileage Club miles | ANA's rules and the accrual conditions ANA sets [4] |
| Card application and screening | The credit card company or co-brand partner, alongside ANA's membership review [4] |
| Goods and services bought from partners | The company providing them [4] |
| Award applications, changes, cancellations and refunds | ANA's conditions [4] |
| Cancelling Mileage Club membership | ANA; for card holders the request must also go to the card company or co-brand partner [4] |
| Changing registered personal details | ANA, and for card holders the card company or co-brand partner [4] |
ANA may change or end a partnership with prior notice, and awards already issued keep the validity they had when they were applied for. [4] The Mileage Club member pages list an ANA Card members' desk among the support menus. [5]
Can members pool miles with family members?
Only through a family scheme, and the route depends on residence. ANA Card members living in Japan must register for ANA Card Family Miles before household miles can be combined for an award, while Mileage Club members living outside Japan must register for the ANA Mileage Club Family Account Service (AFA) instead. [5] Under either scheme the prime member — the representative — logs in and submits the award request. [5]
Pooling does not open the whole award catalogue. Registered households can exchange pooled miles only for the listed awards, which include ANA domestic and international award tickets, ANA international upgrade awards, partner airline award tickets and ANA SKY COIN for members resident in Japan. [5] Miles held in another member's name, or miles held in another airline's programme, cannot be combined with the member's own. [5]
Separately, a member may register up to ten award users — a spouse or same-sex partner and relatives within the second degree, excluding the member — and may be asked for documents proving the relationship. [7] Changing or deleting a registered user costs 5,000 miles per person, although corrections following a change of family register or a spelling fix are free, as is an update when the registered user's ANA Mileage Club number changes. [7]
Exceptions and limits worth knowing
- Expiry. Miles are valid from the month in which the goods or service were used until the end of the month 36 months later, Japan time, and ANA accepts no liability for miles that expire except where its own wilful act or gross negligence is involved. [4]
- Expiry groups. Miles in an account are divided into groups 1 to 4 with different expiry dates; awards must be booked inside the validity window, and when an award is issued the miles closest to expiry are used first, with group 4 taken before groups 3, 2 and 1 where the dates match. [5]
- Dormant accounts. ANA may cancel membership where no miles have actually been accrued for three consecutive years. [4]
- Leaving the programme. On withdrawal, or on losing membership for any reason, everything that depended on membership stops being valid — accrued miles, ANA SKY COIN, Diamond, Platinum and Bronze service status, SUPER FLYERS status and award bookings — and the member must return or dispose of the card. [4]
- Inheritance. Miles cannot be sold, shared, combined or given to third parties, but on a member's death the legal heir may inherit valid miles if the required documents are submitted within 180 days. [4]
Frequently asked questions
Do Mileage Club cards earn miles automatically?
The card application and the membership application are reviewed at the same time, by the card company or co-brand partner and by ANA respectively. [4] Miles are then credited only for flights and partner goods or services that qualify under ANA's accrual conditions, which ANA can change. [4]
How long do miles last?
Until the end of the month 36 months after the month in which the qualifying goods or service were used, measured in Japan time. [4] When an award is issued, miles nearest to expiry are used first. [5]
Can miles be combined with points from partner companies or other airlines?
No: ANA's terms keep the two separate, so miles cannot be shared, combined with or transferred against points from partner companies and airlines. [4] Purchases with partner companies earn miles under the partner's own rules instead. [4]
Who do I tell if I move or change my name?
ANA must be told, and card holders must also report the change to the credit card company or the co-brand partner. [4]
What happens to the card if I leave ANA Mileage Club?
The withdrawal request goes to ANA, and for an ANA credit card or a co-branded card it must also go to the card company or co-brand partner; the card must then be returned or disposed of, and all benefits that depended on membership stop being valid. [4]
