COURSE

Start here: ANA Mileage Club — join, earn, use miles and status

ANA Mileage Club is the membership programme that All Nippon Airways Co., Ltd. (ANA) manages to provide Awards in return for members' use of the products and services of ANA and its Participating Program Partners, with Miles accrued on eligible services and redeemed for those Awards [1]. This course takes a new member through six steps — what the programme is, joining, earning, using Miles, status, and one task to finish today — and points to the Flyerfolio guides that cover each step in depth.

Facts checked: 18 October 2026

Key takeaways

  • The course runs in six steps: what the programme is, joining, earning, using Miles, status, and one action to take today.
  • Joining carries no enrollment or annual fees, and a digital card can be issued immediately [3].
  • Miles pay for Awards; Premium Points are a separate counter that is one of the conditions for Bronze, Platinum and Diamond status and cannot be combined with Miles [8].
  • Miles are valid until the end of the month up to the 36th month from the month a service or product was used [1]. This covers Group 1 (regular) miles from flights and Life Solution Services; campaign miles go to Groups 2-4 (some promotions credit Group 1), with validity varying by campaign [9] [10].
  • For status through flying alone, the yearly requirements are 30,000, 50,000 and 100,000 Premium Points for Bronze, Platinum and Diamond, with a share that must come from ANA Group-operated flights [8].

What you will be able to do after this course

  • Join ANA Mileage Club and recognise which of its two counters — Miles and Premium Points — you are looking at.
  • Explain how an international flight's miles are calculated and what you must do before and after the flight for them to be credited.
  • Describe what Miles can be redeemed for, how long they last and who may travel on them.
  • Read the three Premium status requirements and the annual window in which Premium Points are counted.

Step 1: What ANA Mileage Club is and who it suits

You will learn: how ANA defines the programme, and why it has two separate counters.

ANA's terms describe ANA Mileage Club as a membership programme that provides Awards to customers in return for their use of the products and services of ANA and its Participating Program Partners; Miles are the points a member accrues by using eligible services and can redeem for those Awards [1]. Miles and Premium Points are not the same counter: Premium Points are accrued separately from Miles and are one of the conditions for Premium Member status [8].

ANA's terms link its own statuses to Star Alliance status: customers who fulfil the requirements for Diamond Service, Platinum Service and Super Flyers membership are eligible for Star Alliance Gold, while those who fulfil the requirements for Bronze Service are eligible for Star Alliance Silver [1]. Who the programme suits follows from where Miles come from — members accrue Miles when flying with ANA or the Partner Airlines under certain conditions, and after using the products and services of Participating Program Partners [1].

Step 2: How to join

You will learn: what joining costs, what arrives and when, and the account rules from day one.

There are no enrollment or annual fees, and a digital card can be issued immediately [3]. A physical ANA Mileage Club Card can be requested when enrolling and arrives in 3-4 weeks; while waiting, miles can still be registered when booking flights or by logging in to the ANA Mileage Club app [4].

Membership becomes effective once ANA receives the application and opens a Mileage Account after screening, and a membership number is then sent to the member [1]. Each member may use only one Mileage Account, and Miles from the same transaction cannot be credited to more than one account [1]. The membership number and password must be kept confidential: members are prohibited from letting a third party use them or from assigning, selling or lending them, and ANA treats actions performed with them as the member's own [1]. An ANA Card is a Membership Card jointly issued with a credit card company and printed with the name ANA CARD [1]; it is a separate card option from the ANA Mileage Club Card, covered on the ANA Mileage Club cards page.

Step 3: How earning works

You will learn: the flight-mileage formula and the steps that get a flight credited.

For an international flight, the basic sector mileage is multiplied by the accrual rate for the relevant booking class [5]. Miles accrue on the ticketed booking class regardless of the class actually boarded, except on a downgrade, where the actual cabin class applies, and no Miles accrue unless the member actually travels on the flight booked [1]. On codeshare flights operated by an ANA partner airline, accrual rates may differ and some flights may not accrue at all [5]. Miles can be redeemed only once they are recorded in the Mileage Account [1].

Register the 10-digit ANA Mileage Club membership number when making the reservation, and present the ANA Card or ANA Mileage Club Card at check-in when flying with a partner airline [6]. Keep the boarding pass and e-Ticket Itinerary Receipt until the Miles have been credited [5] [6]. If Miles were not recorded automatically, retroactive registration can be made within the 6 months following the departure date [6]; the terms set the same window at 6 months from the boarding date, or from the date of purchase or use for Participating Program Partner products and services, and note that retroactive registration may not be accepted, or the period may vary, depending on the partner [1].

Step 4: How to use miles

You will learn: what Miles buy, how long they last and who may travel on them.

ANA lists ANA Japan Domestic Flight Awards, ANA International Flight Awards and Partner Flight Awards among the ways to use Miles, alongside ANA International Upgrade Awards, Star Alliance Upgrade Awards and an Additional Baggage Allowance [4]. ANA describes Flight Award tickets as a service for travelling within Japan and overseas with earned Miles, starting at 6,000 miles for a one-way ticket [7]. Reservation and seat availability checks, and confirming or changing a reservation, are reached through the log-in page [7], and the terms applying from December 1, 2026 state that ANA may put restrictions on Flight Awards and Upgrade Awards such as blackout periods and limited seat availability [2].

Miles are valid until the end of the month up to the 36th month at 23:59 Japan time, counting from the month a service or product was used [1], and the terms applying from December 1, 2026 use the same wording [2]. Miles credited to a mileage account are divided into four groups (Groups 1 to 4), and the expiration date and the benefits and procedures for which miles can be used vary by group [9]. Miles earned from flights and Life Solution Services are credited to Group 1 (regular miles), while miles earned through campaigns and other activities are credited to one of Groups 2 to 4 (some promotions may be credited to Group 1), with a validity period that varies by campaign and is announced on each campaign website [10]. Miles are deducted in order of validity period, starting with those soon to expire [10]. Mileage is not invalidated during the period in which a member has ANA Diamond Service status, and if Diamond Service stops, unused miles expire at the end of the month 36 months after that point [9] [10]. Except for some Awards, Awards may be used by the member and by Awards Users, and an Awards User must be registered before the Awards are applied for; ANA may ask for documentation proving the family relationship [1]. Awards Users are limited to the member's relatives within the second degree of kinship, including the member's same-sex partner [1]. Unless ANA specifically provides otherwise, members may not sell, share, combine or donate their Miles to a third party [1].

Step 5: How status works

You will learn: which counter decides status, the three statuses and their annual thresholds.

Premium Points are accrued separately from Miles, on ANA Group flights (ANA, AirJapan, ANA Wings) and on Star Alliance member airline or Star Alliance Connecting Partner operated flights, over the course of a year [8]. The number earned between each January and December is one of the conditions for Premium Member status in the following fiscal year, and Premium Points cannot be carried over into the following year [8]. Miles cannot be exchanged for Premium Points or the reverse, and the two cannot be combined [8].

For members who acquire status through flying alone, the yearly requirements are 30,000 Premium Points, of which 15,000 from ANA Group-operated flights, for Bronze Service; 50,000, of which 25,000 from ANA Group-operated flights, for Platinum Service; and 100,000, of which 50,000 from ANA Group-operated flights, for Diamond Service [8]. ANA lists an exception for cardholders: members who have an ANA Gold Card or ANA Card Premium as of the time they reach 30,000 Premium Points, and ANA states that a member who earns 30,000 or more Premium Points in a year without reaching the 15,000 mark from ANA Group-operated flights will still attain Bronze Service Member status [8]. Where the status for the following year is reached before the end of December, the qualified status can be used as advance service up to the end of March [8].

Step 6: Your first concrete action

You will learn: five actions that set up an account, credit a flight, recover missing Miles and protect an award booking.

  1. Join at ANA's official join page (ana.co.jp/en/jp/amc/join); there are no enrollment or annual fees, and the membership number arrives once ANA opens the Mileage Account after screening [3] [1].
  2. Put the 10-digit membership number on your next ANA or partner airline booking, and present the ANA Card or ANA Mileage Club Card at partner check-in [6].
  3. If a recent flight was not credited, use retroactive mileage registration within 6 months of the departure date at ANA's retroactive registration page [6].
  4. Before redeeming for family, register them as Awards Users (some Awards cannot be used by Awards Users), which is required before applying and is limited to relatives within the second degree of kinship, including a same-sex partner [1]; the award entry pages are on ANA's Flight Awards guide [7].
  5. Note the expiry of each batch of Group 1 miles, valid until the end of the month up to the 36th month counting from the month the service or product was used [1], and check the group and expiry date of any campaign miles on the Mileage Expiration Dates page [9] [10].

Next: read the ANA award booking walkthrough when you are ready to spend Miles, or the ANA and Star Alliance earning guide if your next flight is on a partner airline.
