How to earn ANA Mileage Club miles on Star Alliance flights

ANA Mileage Club credits miles for travel on ANA and on airlines designated as partner airlines, provided the member flies under the prescribed conditions and the accrual standard set by ANA or by the partner is met. [4] The membership terms generally make the booking class of the ticket that was issued — not the cabin actually occupied — the basis on which miles accrue, except on a downgrade, where the cabin actually flown governs instead, [4] so a Star Alliance flight number alone does not settle whether miles post. [2] [4]

Key takeaways

  • Miles accrue when a member flies ANA or a partner airline under the prescribed conditions, according to accrual standards set by ANA or by the partner airline; ANA reserves the right to adjust the eligible sectors, cabin, booking class, fare and accrual rate at any time. [4]
  • Accrual follows the booking class of the ticket issued, not the cabin actually flown, except on a downgrade, where the cabin actually flown governs instead, and a member who does not take the booked flight earns nothing. [4]
  • Star Alliance's member page counts 26 airlines serving more than 1,150 airports in 190 countries, [2] but the ANA terms base accrual on flights on ANA or partner airlines under prescribed conditions, not on Star Alliance membership as such. [2] [4]

Who earns, on which flight, into which account

The terms in the sources apply to flights boarded on or after 19 May 2026. [4] Accrual starts with flying: a member who travels on ANA or a partner airline under the prescribed conditions earns miles on the standards that ANA or the partner airline has set. [4] The terms define partner airlines as carriers on which miles can be accrued under those conditions and which also provide award tickets or upgrade awards. [4]

Account housekeeping matters as much as the flight. A member may hold only one mileage account, and a single product or service cannot be credited twice. [4] If membership was already in place on the travel date but the miles were not credited automatically, a claim can be made within six months of that date, although a partner airline may refuse retroactive credit or apply a different deadline. [4] Queries about a credit are handled within six months of the flight, and ANA may ask for the boarding pass or a receipt. [4]

The size of the credit is worked out by ANA from its mileage table, using the distance between the departure and arrival airports. [4] Children aged 2 to 11 earn on the same standard as adults aged 12 and over; a lap infant without a seat earns nothing, while an infant for whom a seat is purchased earns on the adult standard. [4]

The booking class decides, not the seat

Miles accrue according to the booking class of the ticket issued, whatever cabin is actually flown; the stated exception is a downgrade, where the cabin flown governs instead. [4] Each flight earns once for the individual member, no matter how many seats were bought. [4]

Only one programme pays for the same activity. Where a partner's own loyalty campaign is the basis for collecting that partner's points, ANA miles cannot normally be collected at the same time unless the rules say otherwise. [4] Miles also cannot be shared or pooled with partner points, and if the partner transaction behind a credit is cancelled or refunded, ANA may remove miles already credited. [4] On the spending side, ANA's conditions state the general rule that miles held under another member's name and miles held in another airline's programme cannot be combined with ANA Mileage Club miles. [5] They then attach a direct exception: members registered in ANA Card Family Mile (Japan-resident ANA Card holders) or in the ANA Mileage Club Family Account Service (AFA, members resident outside Japan) can pool ANA Mileage Club miles and exchange them for the eligible awards ANA lists — ANA domestic award tickets, ANA international award tickets, ANA international upgrade awards, partner airline award tickets, and ANA SKY COIN (for Japan-resident members only) — but not for awards outside that list. [5]

The practical point is that the booking class on the ticket matters: the terms make it the general basis for accrual, subject to the downgrade exception, and ANA may adjust eligible booking classes and accrual rates. [4] See partner earning for the general concept.

What the partner side of the rule adds

Because the accrual standard may be set by the partner airline rather than by ANA, [4] the partner's own conditions form part of the answer for any given flight, and ANA's terms place responsibility for partner products and services with the partner. [4] Partner handling also explains two practical differences: retroactive claims may be refused, and the deadline for them may differ from ANA's six months. [4]

The rules are also revisable. ANA states that it may change award content, the number of miles accrued, the conditions for accruing miles and the miles needed for awards, and may do so without prior notice where the change is within a reasonable scope and is either consistent with members' normal interests or in light of the relevant circumstances. [4] An accrual rate observed on an old ticket is therefore not a promise about a future one.

Language matters when reading the text. The Chinese-language version in the sources states that where a translation is ambiguous or conflicts with the Japanese original, the Japanese version governs. [4]

Limits and what is not published

  • Earning charts.
  • Marketing versus operating carrier. The terms speak of flights on partner airlines and of the booking class on the ticket. [4]
  • Connecting partners.
  • Validity and membership. Miles stay valid until the end of the month falling no more than 36 months after the month in which the service was used, measured in Japan time, [4] awards must be exchanged inside that validity, [5] and a member who accrues no miles for three consecutive years may have membership cancelled. [4]
  • Award products are separate. The Star Alliance page ANA publishes is a redemption page: new issuance of the Star Alliance Round the World award ended on 23 June 2025, and tickets issued by that date can still be changed and used until they expire, with dates given in Japan time. [3] ANA also lists Star Alliance upgrade awards among its upgrade products. [6]
