PROGRAMME PROFILE

oneworld branded lounges

oneworld branded lounges are airport lounges that carry the alliance's own branding rather than a member airline's name; oneworld lists them at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) and Seoul-Incheon International Airport (ICN). [1] They are a small part of a much larger lounge network that the alliance opens to its top two frequent flyer tiers, most of which consists of lounges offered by oneworld airlines or by third parties contracted by the operating carrier. [1] [3]

Key takeaways

  • oneworld's own branded lounges are at two airports, Amsterdam Schiphol and Seoul-Incheon, while its tier-based access policy reaches a network the alliance counts in the hundreds. [1] [3]
  • Emerald tier reaches First Class, Business Class or frequent flyer lounges; Sapphire tier reaches Business Class or frequent flyer lounges, but not Qantas Domestic Business Lounges. [1]
  • The frequent flyer route requires the traveller to be departing on a flight that is both marketed and operated by a oneworld member airline. [1] [4]
  • Paid lounge programmes run by Alaska Airlines, American Airlines and Qantas are not part of the oneworld agreement, and their members are not entitled to access under it. [1]

Where the branded lounges are

oneworld introduces its branded lounges in Amsterdam and Seoul-Incheon as "vibrant and calming spaces to recharge, relax and dine before their flights". [1]

The alliance does not present the branded lounges as a replacement for the rest of its lounge estate. Its access policy refers throughout to lounges offered by oneworld airlines, and it counts eligible lounges in the hundreds: the lounge page's search panel says "nearly 700" and its banner "600+", oneworld's priority benefits page says "more than 600", and Qantas says "more than 650". [1] [3] [4] Those figures come from different pages published under different names and should be read as indicative rather than as a precise inventory.

Who the alliance lets in

Tier route. oneworld automatically designates a tier status — Ruby, Sapphire or Emerald — to a member who reaches top status in a member airline's frequent flyer programme. [3] Emerald and Sapphire members may use lounges offered by oneworld airlines when departing on a flight marketed and operated by any oneworld member airline, whatever cabin they fly. [1] Emerald tier reaches First Class, Business Class or frequent flyer lounges, while Sapphire tier reaches Business Class or frequent flyer lounges, with Qantas Domestic Business Lounges expressly excluded from the Sapphire Business Class entitlement. [1]

Cabin route. A passenger flying First or Business Class on any oneworld member airline receives the equivalent class of lounge regardless of frequent flyer status, and a First Class passenger may use a Business Class or frequent flyer lounge where no First Class lounge is available. [1] First and Business Class passengers connecting the same day, or before 06:00 the following day, between an international long haul flight and an international short haul or domestic one — in either direction — can use a lounge; the alliance defines the long haul leg as an international flight marketed and operated by a oneworld carrier with a scheduled flight time longer than five hours, and decides access on the ticketed cabin of that leg. [1]

Guests, timing and documents. Emerald and Sapphire members may invite one guest, and First Class passengers may do the same; in both cases the guest must also be travelling on a flight operated and marketed by a oneworld carrier. [1] The published policy sets out no guest allowance for Business Class passengers. [1] Access is given on the day of travel, or before 06:00 the following day, at the airport from which the eligible oneworld flight departs, and travellers should be ready to show a boarding pass and a membership card carrying Emerald or Sapphire status. [1] Infants under two are not counted as a guest, an eligible child aged 2 to 11 travelling as an unaccompanied minor must be accompanied by an adult counted as their guest, and an eligible young passenger aged 12 to 17 needs no accompanying adult unless local law requires one. [1]

How this differs from a member airline club

An airline's own club is a separate product with its own rules. oneworld states that Alaska Airlines, American Airlines and Qantas run programmes letting customers pay for access to their lounges, that those programmes are not part of the oneworld agreement, and that their members are not entitled to access lounges under it. [1] Qantas, for its part, lists the alliance policy as only one of several ways into its lounges, alongside class of travel, Qantas Frequent Flyer tier, Qantas Club membership and Emirates membership status; it makes entry to Qantas lounges subject to its own lounge entry terms, and entry to non-Qantas branded lounges subject to each operator's eligibility and entry requirements. [4]

Member carriers also divide their lounges by tier and cabin in ways the alliance policy reflects. At Doha, oneworld lists the Al Safwa First Lounge for eligible first class passengers, the Al Mourjan Business Lounges for eligible business class passengers, Platinum Lounges for eligible Emerald members flying economy and Gold Lounges for eligible Sapphire members flying economy; at Bangkok, Paris and Singapore it lists Premium Lounges for eligible first or business class passengers. [1] Some lounges sit outside the policy altogether: the American Airlines and British Airways Chelsea lounge at JFK Terminal 8, British Airways' Concorde lounges and Hawaiian Airlines Premier Clubs are all named as exclusions, and Qatar Airways "Business Lite" and Finnair "Business Light" fares do not qualify for access. [1]

The branded lounges bring their own house rules: oneworld publishes oneworld Lounge Conditions of Use under which the handling company may refuse entry for statutory, regulatory or airport policy reasons, including health and safety policies and fire regulations. [1] Those conditions require guests to be appropriately dressed and to behave appropriately, allow entry to be refused or a person removed where dress or behaviour is considered unsuitable or likely to offend other guests, forbid taking food or drink out of the lounge, ask guests not to consume food or drink other than what the lounge provides, and state a no-smoking policy at all times. [1]

Exceptions and limits

  • Facilities outside the policy. Arrivals lounges, spa and pre-flight dining facilities are excluded, some lounges may be restricted when busy at peak times, and a third-party lounge counts only where the airline being flown has contracted it. [1]
  • Connect partners. Qantas's summary of the cabin route excludes oneworld connect partners from the lounges reachable that way. [4]
  • Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines Atmos Rewards. Members, whatever their tier or cabin, are not eligible for oneworld member airline lounges when travelling solely within and between the U.S., Canada and Mexico. [1]
  • American Airlines AAdvantage. Members are not eligible when flying solely on North American flights between the U.S., Canada, Mexico (except Mexico City), the Bahamas, Bermuda and the Caribbean, nor when flying solely on domestic U.S. flights, subject to some exceptions. [1] First and Business Class passengers without Emerald or Sapphire status are not eligible on American domestic flights solely within the U.S., between the U.S. and the Caribbean, between the U.S. and Mexico (except Mexico City), or Canada, except on the non-stop transcontinental routes JFK–LAX and JFK–SFO and their reverses. [1]
  • A dated American offer. oneworld records a limited-time offer effective 1 April 2021 under which American Airlines First and Business Class customers, and AAdvantage Executive Platinum, Platinum Pro and Platinum members, are eligible for Admirals Clubs when travelling on an American-operated international flight. [1]
  • SriLankan FlySmiLes. Platinum and Gold members flying economy from Male, Gan, Trivandrum, Tiruchirappalli, Chennai, Madurai, Bangalore, Cochin, Coimbatore or Hyderabad to Colombo and back, on SriLankan-operated flights, are outside lounge access, and the carve-out also catches those booked on an international itinerary arriving on a flight under five hours and connecting via Colombo to or from those sectors; it does not apply to other members holding Emerald or Sapphire. [1]
  • What the policy does not settle.
