PROGRAMME PROFILE
SAS Lounge: access rules and guests
SAS Lounge refers to airport lounge access listed among the benefits of Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) premium award cabins, Business Bonus and Premium Bonus. [5] Which passengers are actually admitted is also settled by the alliance whose lounge is being used, and Star Alliance publishes one access policy for its member carriers' lounges covering cabin, frequent flyer status and guests. [4]
Facts checked: 18 October 2026
Key takeaways
- SAS lists lounge access as a benefit of its Business Bonus and Premium Bonus award travel, with the Premium benefit described for flights within Europe; both entries are marked “where available”. [5]
- Under Star Alliance's policy as of 18 October 2026, admission is decided by cabin or by status: International First and Business class passengers, and Star Alliance Gold members flying a member airline in any cabin, are admitted, while Star Alliance Silver membership does not open the door. [4]
- International First, Star Alliance Gold and Eligible Paid Lounge Membership customers may each bring one guest, who must be travelling on a Star Alliance flight from the same airport. [4]
- Star Alliance sells paid lounge entry at selected lounges with no status or cabin requirement, but the traveller must be flying a Star Alliance member carrier. [2] [3]
Which SAS tickets include lounge access?
SAS sells award travel in Economy, Premium and Business, each with a “Bonus” version whose inclusions are set out in its award-ticket terms. [5] Lounge access appears in the two premium benefit lists rather than the entry-level ones. [5]
| Award cabin | Lounge access listed | Other benefits listed |
|---|---|---|
| Business Bonus | Lounge access, where available [5] | Fast track where available, priority boarding, two checked bags of up to 32 kg each [5] |
| Premium Bonus | Lounge access on flights within Europe, where available [5] | Fast track where available, priority boarding, better seating, two checked bags of up to 23 kg each [5] |
Premium Bonus is offered on flights within Scandinavia and Finland and to destinations outside Europe, subject to availability. [5] Business Bonus is offered on flights to and from Scandinavia and Finland to destinations in Europe and outside Europe, also subject to availability. [5] Award seats are limited in number and are released up to 330 days before departure. [5] Award trips do not earn EuroBonus points or qualifying flights. [5]
Who gets into a Star Alliance lounge by cabin and status?
Star Alliance's access policy, as of 18 October 2026, works from two starting points: the ticket and class of travel, or frequent flyer status. [4] International First and Business class customers have access to Star Alliance lounges when they travel in First or Business. [4] Star Alliance Gold customers have access when they travel on a Star Alliance flight in any class of travel, while Star Alliance Silver customers do not have access to Star Alliance lounges. [4]
The flight matters as much as the card or the seat: a passenger must always be departing on a flight operated by a Star Alliance member airline to use a Star Alliance or member airline lounge at the departure airport. [4] Star Alliance and its member airlines provide access to more than 1,000 lounges worldwide, including six Star Alliance branded lounges in Amsterdam, Rome, Rio de Janeiro, Paris, Los Angeles and Buenos Aires. [4] On a connecting itinerary that pairs a member airline flight with a flight operated by a Connecting Partner on the same reservation, Star Alliance Gold customers can also use member-owned lounges, Star Alliance branded lounges, Connecting Partner lounges and lounges contracted by the Connecting Partner. [4]
Can you bring a guest into a Star Alliance lounge?
International First, Star Alliance Gold and Eligible Paid Lounge Membership customers are entitled to one guest each. [4] The guest has to enter the designated lounge together with the eligible customer and must present a boarding pass for a Star Alliance flight departing from the local airport. [4] Where a guest is refused, Star Alliance asks Gold members to raise the matter with the airline whose frequent flyer programme they belong to, and cabin-based travellers with the airline they are flying. [4]
Can you buy lounge access without status?
Star Alliance sells paid lounge entry at selected lounges in its network, and no frequent flyer status or business class ticket is needed for a purchased visit. [2] [3] The condition that does apply is the flight: the traveller must be flying on a Star Alliance member carrier. [2] [3]
Entry is valid only for the lounge that was reserved, and the reservation must be shown with a valid boarding pass for the same day of travel, with identification produced if asked. [2] [3] A booking can cover up to nine people including the person making it, and extra guests can be bought under the same reservation, though guests are admitted only in the presence of the person named on it. [2] [3] Stays are capped at three hours unless the access document or the lounge itself indicates otherwise. [2] [3]
Child access is set lounge by lounge: some admit children free of charge and others require paid access for every child, and the person making the reservation must be at least 18. [2] [3] A reservation is fully refunded if it is cancelled more than 24 hours before the estimated entry time because the flight was cancelled or delayed by more than four hours; without such a cancellation, or where the flight was not disrupted by more than four hours, the booking is not refunded, and bookings made less than 24 hours before entry are refunded only in part, excluding a service fee of 5% of the transaction. [2] [3]
What are the exceptions and limits?
- Lounge access on SAS award tickets is qualified as “where available”. [5]
- For Premium Bonus, the lounge benefit is described for flights within Europe only, not for every Premium Bonus route. [5]
- Star Alliance access is tied to departure: arrival lounge access is not a Star Alliance benefit, and its lounge finder lists departure lounges only. [4]
- No cabin or status overrides the flight requirement, since a passenger must be departing on a member airline flight to use a Star Alliance or member airline lounge. [4]
- Paid entry is not a transferable pass: only the reserved lounge can be used, some lounges restrict the times at which access can be bought, and the stay is limited to three hours unless stated otherwise. [2] [3]
- Star Alliance's rules in this profile are dated 18 October 2026; alliance membership and lounge agreements change, so check the current position before relying on a status-based benefit. [4]
