How to find Aeroplan award sweet spots
Aeroplan award sweet spots are the route, cabin and booking combinations where the rules of the Air Canada Aeroplan programme give the most for the points you spend. Two published Aeroplan rules shape most of them: flight rewards with Air Canada carry no cash surcharges, and every seat on every Air Canada flight can be booked with points, with no restrictions. [5]
Facts checked: 18 October 2026
Key takeaways
- Aeroplan flight rewards are booked at aircanada.com for Air Canada and its partner airlines. [5]
- Flight rewards with Air Canada carry no cash surcharges, and every seat on every Air Canada flight is available as a reward with no restrictions. [5]
- A flight reward can be booked with a combination of points and cash through Points + Cash. [3] [5]
- Aeroplan points expire after 18 months of account inactivity, and expiry is paused until 30 November 2026. [3] [6]
- Flights redeemed with Aeroplan points do not accumulate Status Qualifying Credits. [4]
What rules decide whether an Aeroplan award is good value?
An Aeroplan flight reward has two price tags. One is in points. The other is everything else the booking asks of you: cash added on top, and whether a seat is there at all. Aeroplan's own description of its flight rewards addresses both, saying that flight rewards with Air Canada carry no cash surcharges and that every seat, on every Air Canada flight, can be booked with points with no restrictions. [5] A redemption that avoids a cash top-up and does not depend on a scarce award seat is the pattern this guide treats as a sweet spot; how regional pricing works is set out separately in Aeroplan region-based award pricing.
For partner airlines the published description is narrower: Aeroplan says members can redeem points for flights with Air Canada and its partner airlines at aircanada.com. [5] The no-surcharge and every-seat statements are Aeroplan rules for Air Canada flight rewards, not a description of every reward the programme sells. [5]
| Rule | What it says | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Cash surcharges | No cash surcharges on flight rewards [5] | Air Canada flight rewards |
| Seat access | Every seat, every Air Canada flight, no restrictions [5] | Air Canada flights |
| Part payment | Points + Cash [3] [5] | Flight rewards |

How does the every-seat rule change the way you search?
On Air Canada flights, the constraint is your points balance and the cash part of the booking rather than a separate block of seats held back for awards, because Aeroplan describes every seat on every Air Canada flight as bookable with points and free of restrictions. [5] That makes cabin and date the first choices to settle, and the points and cash mix the second.
Both Air Canada and partner airline rewards are booked in the same place, at aircanada.com. [5] The step-by-step mechanics sit in How to book Aeroplan awards, and the general test for judging any programme's strong redemptions is in the award sweet spots method.
Do Aeroplan award flights earn Elite Status credits?
No. Aeroplan's status page states that flights redeemed with Aeroplan points do not accumulate Status Qualifying Credits (SQC), the single measure used to reach Aeroplan Elite Status and to unlock Milestones. [4] Elite Status is reached by meeting SQC requirements within a calendar year, starting at 25,000 SQC for Aeroplan 25K Status and rising to 125,000 SQC for Aeroplan Super Elite Status. [4] A points-only trip therefore delivers its value in the flight itself and adds nothing toward status. [4]
How do you keep points alive while you wait for the right award?
Aeroplan points expire if the account has been inactive for 18 months. [3] Earning or redeeming at least one Aeroplan point within an 18-month period keeps the account active. [3] Qualifying activity includes earning with Air Canada, its airline partners including the Star Alliance network, hotels, car rental companies, the Aeroplan eStore, retail partners, or by redeeming for flights, hotels, car rentals, gift cards, events, extras and upgrades such as in-flight Wi-Fi; donating points to charity, transferring points to another member and converting points from another loyalty programme also count. [3] Primary cardholders of the TD, American Express and CIBC Aeroplan credit cards, and members holding Aeroplan Elite Status, are told their points will not expire. [3]
Expiry is on hold until 30 November 2026: points that would have expired up to 29 November 2026 will not, and from 30 November 2026 the normal policy applies, with points expiring if an eligible transaction has not been completed before that date. [6] Aeroplan emails members up to 60 days before points expire. [3]
Exceptions and limits
- Air Canada rules are not programme-wide rules. The no-cash-surcharge and every-seat statements are made about flight rewards with Air Canada; partner airline rewards are booked through Aeroplan as well, but those two statements are not attached to them. [5]
- The expiry pause has an end date. 29 November 2026 is the last day covered, and normal expiry returns on 30 November 2026. [6]
- Expired points can come back. Aeroplan offers buy-back for a fee, or reinstatement of all points if you fly with Air Canada within six months of expiry; you may book after the points expire, but travel must fall inside the six-month period. [3]
- Award flights earn no SQC. A trip booked entirely with points does not move you toward Aeroplan Elite Status or Milestones. [4]
- This page covers flight rewards. Aeroplan also lists hotel, car rental, vacation package, activity, merchandise and gift card redemptions; they are outside the scope of this guide. [5]
