How to understand Amtrak fare types and change rules

Amtrak fare types are the published ticket families — Flex, Value and Sale for Coach, Acela Business and Acela First Class — that decide how much of the price comes back if you cancel before departure. A Flex fare is refunded in full with no fee before departure, while a Value fare keeps 30% of the total fare and a Sale fare keeps 50%, and neither of those two allows changes. [2]

Key takeaways

  • Published Coach, Acela Business and Acela First Class tickets come in three fare families — Flex, Value and Sale — and the policy that applies to a one-way, roundtrip or multi-city ticket follows the fare type that was bought. [2]
  • Flex is the only one of the three that can be changed before departure; the change itself carries no fee, but a difference in fare may apply. [2]
  • Value keeps 30% of the total fare and Sale keeps 50% if the ticket is cancelled before departure, and neither can be changed. [2]
  • Reserved tickets bought directly from Amtrak can be cancelled for a full refund within 24 hours of purchase, and unreserved tickets within one hour. [2]
  • After departure every fare is non-refundable and non-changeable, and a passenger who does not cancel before departure forfeits the whole value of that segment. [2]

What are Amtrak's fare families?

Amtrak applies the cancellation and change policy of the fare type that was purchased, whether the ticket is one-way, roundtrip or multi-city. [2] For reserved Coach, Acela Business and Acela First Class travel the published families are Flex, Value and Sale. [2] Amtrak's booking pages promote the Flex fare as fully refundable with no cancellation fees before departure. [3]

Two groups sit outside those three families. Non-Acela Business Class tickets are refunded in full to the original form of payment with no fees before departure, and can be changed for no fee with a possible fare difference. [2] Acela First Class carries no separate refund rule of its own: the cancellation and change policy follows whichever fare — Flex, Value or Sale — was purchased. [2] Acela, Amtrak's high-speed rail service, runs between Boston and Washington with stops including New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Wilmington. [5] Private Rooms are handled separately again, with a graduated refund that depends on how far ahead of departure the booking is cancelled. [2]

How do refunds and changes compare by fare?

The treatment below applies to cancellation before departure, as published on 18 October 2026. [2]

Amtrak refund and change treatment by fare, before departure [2]
Fare or classRefund on cancellationChanges
FlexFull refund to original form of payment, no feesNo fee; difference in fare may apply
Value30% of total fare forfeited, 70% refundedNot permitted
Sale50% of total fare forfeited, 50% refundedNot permitted
Business (non-Acela)Full refund to original form of payment, no feesNo fee; difference in fare may apply
Private Rooms121 days or more before departure: full refund. 120 to 15 days: 75% refunded, 25% forfeited. Within 14 days: 75% as a non-refundable eVoucher, 25% forfeitedNo fee; difference in fare may apply

The forfeited share is taken from the total fare and the refund goes to the original form of payment. [2] If only part of a trip is cancelled, the remaining value is the total amount paid minus the amount paid for travel already taken. [2]

How can you still cancel a restricted fare?

Cancel soon after booking. Reserved fares bought from Amtrak by cash, credit card or debit card are fully refunded to the original form of payment if the ticket is cancelled within 24 hours of purchase and before the scheduled departure, while unreserved services have a one-hour window instead. [2] Where the original purchase was cash, the refund may be issued by check. [2] Tickets bought or issued through third parties follow that seller's terms and conditions rather than Amtrak's. [2]

Claim an illness waiver. If a passenger asks to change or cancel because of illness and presents a doctor's note, Amtrak waives the fare change and cancellation policies that would normally apply, and the waiver covers everyone else in that passenger's party. [2]

Take the credit instead. A reservation paid for with a gift card is credited as an eVoucher when it is cancelled, modified or downgraded, and the type of eVoucher matches the fare purchased. [2] An eVoucher or other exchange credit stays valid for one year after the original ticket was issued. [2] Most tickets bought on Amtrak.com or in the Amtrak app can be cancelled and refunded online, and refunds can also be handled by phone at 1-800-USA-RAIL, at stations with a ticket office, or by mail for cash refunds. [2]

Exceptions and limits

  • Missed trains. All fares are non-refundable and non-changeable after departure, and a passenger who does not cancel before departure forfeits the entire value of the no-show segment; this applies to tickets paid in US dollars, including by gift certificate, and to tickets paid with Amtrak Guest Rewards points. [2]
  • Boarding late, leaving early or downgrading. No refund or exchange credit is given if a passenger boards beyond, or leaves before, the station they are reserved to, or downgrades accommodation on board, and a fare adjustment requires changing the reservation before the train leaves the original boarding station. [2] The restriction does not apply during a service disruption, and an onboard downgrade needs a Refund Authorization Form from the conductor. [2]
  • Time limit. A ticket becomes non-refundable, invalid for travel and worthless for exchange one year after the date payment was made, unless a different period is endorsed on the ticket. [2]
  • Monthly tickets. Before the valid month and with no rides taken, a ticket cancelled within one hour of purchase is refunded in full, while one cancelled later forfeits 25% and returns 75%; a change at that stage forfeits 25% and leaves 75% to exchange. [2] On days 1 to 10 of the valid month with no rides taken the split is 50/50 for both cancellation and change, and from day 11 neither is permitted. [2]
  • Six-ride and ten-ride tickets. The same one-hour and 25% rules apply before any ride is taken; once a ride has been taken, neither cancellation nor change is permitted, and a cancellation fee applies to every multi-ride refund. [2] Refunds may also be restricted where a multi-ride ticket was paid with a tax-free transit subsidy, and refund policies for multi-ride tickets Amtrak sells for other operators, such as MARC and Shore Line East, are set by that carrier. [2]
  • Upgrade bids. If an Amtrak BidUp offer is awarded and the ticket upgraded, the ticket becomes fully non-refundable, non-changeable and non-transferable even if it was bought as a flexible fare. [2]
  • Add-ons. Vehicles on the Auto Train, golf bags, bikes and pets take the cancellation policy of the fare they were booked with, so a bike on a Coach Value reservation follows the Value rules. [2]

Amtrak states that its refund and cancellation policy is subject to change at any time. [2]

Frequently asked questions

Can you change a Value or Sale fare on Amtrak?

No. Changes are not permitted on Value or Sale fares, although either ticket can still be cancelled before departure for a partial refund. [2]

How much of an Amtrak Value fare is refunded?

70% of the total fare, because 30% is forfeited when the ticket is cancelled before departure. [2]

Does Amtrak charge a change fee on a Flex fare?

No fee is charged, but a difference in fare may apply when the ticket is rebooked. [2]

What happens if you miss an Amtrak train?

The entire value of the missed segment is forfeited when a passenger does not cancel before departure. [2]

Can you cancel an Amtrak ticket for free within 24 hours?

For reserved fares bought directly from Amtrak by cash, credit card or debit card, a full refund is issued if the ticket is cancelled within 24 hours of purchase and before departure; unreserved tickets must be cancelled within one hour of purchase. [2]
