Key takeaways
- Most Voyager awards are priced from award charts on flysaa.com, while Dynamic Awards have no chart and are quoted inside the booking flow. [1]
- Awards can be issued on flysaa.com, in the Voyager app, at an SAA ticketing office or through a Voyager Service Center, but Dynamic and JourneyBlitz awards are self-service on flysaa.com only. [1]
- Tickets issued at an SAA ticketing office carry a service fee of R200 within South Africa and R500 on international routes, and award ticket processing fees are non-refundable. [1]
- An award can be reversed within 30 days of issue for R210, except for Platinum and Lifetime Platinum members, and only miles still in validity return to the account. [1]
How are SAA Voyager awards priced and zoned?
Voyager sets out the miles needed in award charts on flysaa.com, and its terms direct members to the “Spending miles” page for the chart that applies. [1] Dynamic Awards are the exception: there is no chart, and a member gets a quote for a specific flight by logging in with a membership number and PIN and following the booking process. [1]
Dynamic Awards are limited to South African Airways flight numbers SA 001 to SA 999 where South African Airways is the operating carrier, and are issued on published revenue fare classes. [1] They cover the base fare and carrier-imposed fees and exclude other charges such as government taxes, surcharges and levies, third-party taxes and any credit card levy, which the member settles separately. [1]
Zones decide more than price. South African Airways Upgrade Awards are issued only for travel within the qualifying region named in the award chart, and a change that moves a booking to a different routing, zone, region or class forces the award to be reversed and re-issued. [1] Apart from Dynamic Awards, South African Airways and Airline Partner awards are issued only between the two cities served, on the most direct route. [1] Star Alliance and other airline partner awards use their own charts and their own extra rules. [1] Voyager members can spend miles with more than 30 airline partners, including the Star Alliance network. [3]
Where can you book a Voyager award, and what fees apply?
Awards may be issued on flysaa.com, in the SAA Voyager app, or at any South African Airways ticketing office or Voyager Service Center, with narrower channels for some award types. [1]
| Award type | Booking channel |
|---|---|
| South African Airways, Star Alliance and other airline partner flight awards | flysaa.com, Voyager app, SAA ticketing office, Voyager Service Center [1] |
| Dynamic Awards | flysaa.com only, self-service [1] |
| JourneyBlitz Awards | flysaa.com only; unaccompanied minors via the Call Center [1] |
| Star Alliance Upgrade Awards | Upgrade link on flysaa.com after log-in [1] |
Outside South Africa, only South African Airways ticketing offices are authorized to issue South African Airways and Airline Partner award tickets, though members can still issue an electronic ticket on flysaa.com, and not every airport outside the country has ticketing facilities. [1] Requests handled by a ticketing office or service center are processed in business hours and need a signed written request, a copy of the member’s valid identification document and authority to pay any applicable fees, sent to [email protected]; a legal guardian signs for a child or for a member without legal capacity. [1] Taxes, fees, levies, charges and surcharges are for the passenger’s account and, at a Voyager Service Center, may only be paid by credit card. [1]

What are the ticketing and validity rules for Voyager awards?
An award ticket for a confirmed booking must be issued within the applicable ticket time limit. [1] South African Airways and Airline Partner Award Certificates are valid for a maximum of six months from issue and must be exchanged for the actual ticket before they expire, while Non-Airline Partner Award Certificates last a maximum of three months. [1] If an award expires, every mile used for it is forfeited, even where those miles were not yet due to expire, and the terms allow no exceptions. [1] Dynamic and JourneyBlitz awards skip the certificate: the award and ticket are issued in a single transaction. [1]
Names on the ticket must match the travel document. [1] International travel is ticketed in the passenger’s full name as shown in the passport and domestic travel in the full name shown in the passport and/or identification document, and the traveler’s surname must match the surname recorded for the award recipient when the award was issued. [1] A member may request an award for personal use or for anyone they designate but carries sole responsibility for how it is used, and once issued neither the award nor the ticket can be transferred. [1] Award tickets are issued on a return or one-way basis unless South African Airways says otherwise, cannot be issued on codeshare flights where South African Airways or the partner is not the operating carrier, and are always subject to availability. [1] Only one award may be used per member per sector, and awards cannot be combined with another person’s account or award. [1] A Dynamic Award ticket is valid for six months from first departure within South Africa and 12 months from first departure elsewhere. [1]
Can you change or reverse a Voyager award ticket?
Subject to the rules of the partner involved, an award can be reversed within 30 days of the date of issue for R210 plus any other relevant fees, with Platinum and Lifetime Platinum members exempt, and only miles still within validity are credited back; expired miles are not reinstated. [1]
If a change to a ticketed award flight moves the booking to a different routing, zone, region or class, the award must be reversed and re-issued, and once travel has commenced no routing or region change is allowed; award flights must be taken in the order originally booked and ticketed. [1] On Dynamic Awards the fare rules of the published revenue class apply on top of the Voyager terms, voluntary change fees are collected in cash or by card, and a date change that lands in a different booking class means the ticket is refunded, the award reversed and a new award requested. [1] JourneyBlitz Awards are non-reversible and non-refundable, and no changes are permitted. [1]
When a flight is canceled, the member is moved to the next available flight with the airline partner named on the award ticket at the discretion of South African Airways or the partner, and a passenger on an Upgrade Award travels in the class actually purchased. [1] An unused award is reclaimed through a Voyager Service Center with documentation of the circumstances, including copies of boarding passes and the ticket. [1] Award disputes are considered only if notified in writing within 90 days of the date the award was issued to the Voyager Program Compliance Division in Isando, South Africa, or by email; telephonic requests are not accepted. [1]
Exceptions and limits to check before you book
- Miles must still be valid. Miles are valid for three years after the year in which they were earned and expire on 31 March each year, with the membership year running 1 April to 31 March. [1]
- Shortfalls. A member may buy up to 50% of the miles an award needs at R250 per 1,000 miles by credit card [1], while the Voyager site advertises R100 per 1,000 miles for an SAA flight award as of 18 October 2026 [3].
- Pooling. The terms state that miles cannot be transferred, assigned, sold or combined with another person’s account [1], while the Voyager site advertises transfers to other Voyager members at R120 per 1,000 miles as of 18 October 2026 [3].
- Children. An award request for a child or a member without legal capacity must be signed by their legal guardian, and miles redeemed for child and infant Dynamic Award tickets are chargeable under the applicable fare rules. [1]
- Which rules apply. The terms in force when miles are redeemed govern an award, and Voyager may amend the terms, so the June 2022 figures above can change [1]; the copy of the terms carried on the Voyager site is dated February 2019 [2].
Frequently asked questions
Can I book an SAA Voyager award online?
Yes. Awards can be issued on flysaa.com or in the Voyager app as well as at an SAA ticketing office or Voyager Service Center [1], and Dynamic and JourneyBlitz awards are only available as self-service bookings on flysaa.com [1].
How many miles does an SAA Voyager award need?
The numbers sit in the award charts on flysaa.com, which the terms point to from the “Spending miles” page [1]. Dynamic Awards have no chart, so the quote comes from the booking flow after log-in [1].
How long is a Voyager award certificate valid?
Six months from issue for South African Airways and Airline Partner certificates and three months for Non-Airline Partner certificates, and each must be exchanged for the actual ticket or service before it lapses [1].
Do Platinum members pay the reversal fee?
No. The R210 reversal fee does not apply to Platinum and Lifetime Platinum members, though only miles still within validity return to the account [1].
