How to Book SAS EuroBonus Awards

SAS EuroBonus awards are flights booked with EuroBonus Bonus points, either on SAS or on a partner airline that takes part in the programme. [4] [5] Point prices are fixed by destination and travel class, award seats are limited, and taxes, fees and carrier-imposed surcharges are paid separately by card. [5] [7]

Key takeaways

  • Only Bonus points can pay for an award trip; Level points count towards membership levels but cannot be used for award trips. [4]
  • SAS marks award flights with a gold dot, and award seats are released up to 330 days before departure, subject to availability. [7]
  • Award seats are limited, and a seat can be open for a cash purchase while no award seat is offered for it. [4]
  • Booking partner awards adds a booking fee of 250–950 SEK or NOK, 175–665 DKK or from 25 EUR per traveller, depending on the trip and travel class. [5]
  • Taxes, fees and any fuel or other surcharge imposed by SAS or a partner airline are charged separately and cannot be paid with points. [4]

Points, validity and who can fly

EuroBonus is owned and operated by SAS EuroBonus AB, a wholly-owned subsidiary of SAS AB. [4] The programme uses three categories of points: Level points, which count towards reaching or renewing a membership level but cannot be used for award trips; Bonus points, which can be used for award trips and other products but do not count towards a higher level; and Qualifying flights. [4] In practice, an award booking draws on Bonus points only. [4]

Bonus points stay valid for four years after the qualification period in which they were earned, and after that deadline they become null and void. [4] If a member earns no points at all for 24 months and holds no valid, usable points, EuroBonus reserves the right to terminate the membership. [4] Points and benefits are personal and cannot be sold, transferred, combined or inherited, subject to what the programme states otherwise. [4] Award trips and benefits may be used only by the member or by their closest family unless the programme says otherwise. [4]

Ordinary booking rules for flight tickets apply to every member regardless of membership level. [4] Travel agencies are not entitled to issue tickets, vouchers or similar in exchange for points, so an award has to be issued through the programme's own channels. [4] Full booking, cancellation, rebooking and fee rules for award tickets sit in SAS's separate Fly with points terms, which the member terms refer to. [4]

Partner and SkyTeam bookings

EuroBonus points can be used for award flights with SAS and with partner airlines, and the programme describes access to a partner network reaching more than 1,000 destinations on all continents. [5] On the Aerolíneas Argentinas partner page, EuroBonus points can be used for award flights except charter flights. [6] On a single partner booking you can mix SAS and other SkyTeam airlines, and you can mix travel classes between the outbound and return, but not within one direction. [5] A return trip starting from a different airport has to be arranged through SAS Customer Service. [5]

A booking fee applies to partner airlines: 250–950 SEK or NOK, 175–665 DKK, or from 25 EUR per traveller, depending on the trip and the travel class. [5] Some airlines cost more in points than others — Air Europa, China Airlines and Vietnam Airlines charge double points. [5] Partner airlines may also have different products and baggage rules from SAS. [5] Aerolíneas Argentinas is one named SkyTeam partner on which EuroBonus members can both earn and use points. [6]

Changes, cancellations and refunds

A partner award can be cancelled free of charge within 24 hours of booking, with the points refunded. [5] The SAS award-ticket terms on the SAS page allow cancellation or rebooking up to an hour before departure, subject to a fee. [7] After that free-cancellation window, partner bookings can be cancelled or rebooked up to 24 hours before departure. [5] Change and cancellation fees on partner awards are 250 SEK or NOK, 175 DKK, 25 USD per traveller within Europe, and 750 SEK or NOK, 525 DKK, 75 USD per traveller on international trips. [5] On SAS award tickets the same two bands apply, listed for domestic and European flights and for flights to and from Asia and North America respectively. [7]

Booking fees are refundable when you cancel the flight, but expired points and expired Amex 2-for-1 vouchers are not refunded; only valid points and valid vouchers come back. [5] A refund can take up to seven business days to arrive. [5] On rebooking or cancellation only valid points return to the account, and they keep their original expiry date, so expired points cannot be revived this way. [4] Only bookings made online can be cancelled online, and documents for a cancelled offer must be returned to obtain a refund. [4] When an SAS award ticket is combined with a Regular ticket paid with points, the regular fare rules govern rebooking and cancellation. [7]

Award trips do not earn EuroBonus points or qualifying flights. [5] [7] The Amex 2-for-1 voucher and Mastercard Fly Premium can only be applied when you book, not to flights already booked, and one Amex 2-for-1 voucher per booking covers at most two travellers. [5] [7] Connecting flights from the Nordic countries to major hubs can be added for a fee per traveller, and that connecting fee is non-refundable. [5]

Exceptions and limits

  • Stopovers. The partner award page says no stopovers longer than 24 hours [5], while the SAS award ticket page allows stopovers over 24 hours only on SAS flights to and from Asia or North America, one each way. [7] Check which one applies to the ticket you are pricing.
  • Children. The partner award page says there are no child discounts on award tickets [5], whereas the SAS award ticket page says children aged 2–11 pay 50% in points and children under 2 fly free with taxes still applying. [7]
  • No points plus cash. Points cannot be used in combination with cash, discount offers, coupons or other special offers unless the programme states otherwise; taxes and fees are a separate charge, not a part-payment of the fare. [4]
  • Availability. Award seats are limited and subject to availability, and seats can be open for ordinary purchase even when they are not available for points. [4]
  • Rules can change. SAS may update its rules and point prices. [5] [7]
  • Misuse. SAS may cancel an award flight at any time if a member misuses the programme's services or otherwise breaches the member terms, the general terms, the conditions of carriage or the Fly with points terms. [4]
