How to buy Etihad Guest Miles
Etihad Guest Miles are the reward currency of Etihad Guest, the loyalty programme of Etihad Airways, and a member can add to that balance by buying miles through the BuyMiles option on the Etihad Airways website. [6] The miles are credited to the member's own Etihad Guest account, where they can then be redeemed for flight rewards, upgrades and other rewards. [6]

Key takeaways
- Etihad Guest members can add miles to their own account by buying them through BuyMiles on the Etihad Airways website. [6]
- Purchasing Etihad Guest Miles for cash outside the channels Etihad expressly authorises is listed as misuse, and Etihad says misuse will cause the membership to be cancelled with immediate effect. [6]
- Each Qualifying Activity extends the validity period of the member's Etihad Guest Miles by 18 months, so a balance stays usable when the member keeps qualifying at least every 18 months. [6]
How do you buy Etihad Guest Miles?
The direct route Etihad sets out in its programme terms is BuyMiles: Etihad credits Etihad Guest Miles and Etihad Guest Tier Miles to a member's account for the purchase of "BuyMiles" on its website. [6] Miles bought this way sit in the member's own Etihad Guest membership account and are not awarded to anybody else in respect of the same purchase. [6]
The account has to be active first. Etihad's member guidance says a new member must activate the Etihad Guest account before earning or spending miles. [1] Membership is open to individuals only — companies, trusts, partnerships and other entities cannot join — and Etihad Guest membership is not transferable. [6] Applicants must be at least two years of age, and enrolment forms for anyone under 18 are completed by a legal parent or guardian. [6]
Etihad credits miles earned on a non-flight purchase to the account of the member named on the relevant booking or order. [6] Outside Family Membership it is not possible to share the allocation of Etihad Guest Miles, and the same purchase will not be awarded to more than one member. [6] Etihad also reserves the right to cancel or deduct any miles credited for products or services that were not supplied, not eligible, not paid for on its website or deemed fraudulent. [6]
What can you spend bought Etihad Guest Miles on?
Etihad Guest Miles can be redeemed for both Flight Rewards and Non-Flight Rewards, and the number of miles a given reward requires is shown on the Etihad Airways website and the Reward Shop, where it can change at any time without notice. [6] Miles can also be used as a form of payment for Etihad Airways products and at participating Etihad Guest partners. [6]
Booking online is the cheaper route for reward redemptions: rewards booked through the Etihad Airways website do not incur a service fee, while a reward booked through the Etihad Guest Service Centre may carry one, except Upgrade Rewards paid with miles, and the fee is advised at the time of booking. [6]
Upgrades from a miles balance are miles-only: the Cash + Miles option cannot be used for Upgrade Rewards, and an upgrade has to be booked at least three hours before flight departure. [6] Where Cash + Miles is used for a Promo seat, the member must contribute at least 75% of the miles that the same Promo seat would cost outright. [6] For more on that redemption route, see Etihad Guest upgrade awards.
How long does a bought Etihad Guest Miles balance last?
Bought miles join the existing balance and follow the account's validity rules. A Qualifying Activity extends the validity period of the member's Etihad Guest Miles by 18 months, and if no Qualifying Activity is completed within 18 months of the last one, the balance expires on the last day of that 18th month. [6] Etihad sets out the definition of Qualifying Activities on the Etihad Airways website, and that definition can change. [6]
Two groups sit outside that cycle. The miles of Etihad Guest Platinum and Emerald members do not expire while that tier status is maintained, and once such a member is downgraded the whole balance becomes valid for 18 months from the downgrade date. [6] Separately, after 36 continuous months of account inactivity Etihad may terminate the membership, and a member who cancels membership loses all accumulated miles immediately. [6]
Exceptions and limits
- Buying from third parties. Etihad's terms list "selling, transferring and/or purchasing for cash (or other forms of consideration) any … Etihad Guest Miles", other than where Etihad expressly authorises it, as misuse that causes the membership to be cancelled with immediate effect. [6]
- Upgrade exclusions. Upgrade Rewards are not available on ID/AD tickets in S class, travel industry reduced rates, free or non-revenue tickets, staff promotion tickets or Promo seats in the Value and Comfort fare brands, and tickets issued in N, I and X classes are also excluded, with Etihad noting an exception for Promo seats in a Deluxe fare brand. [6]
- Under-18 accounts. The right to redeem Etihad Guest Miles can only be exercised by members who can enter legally binding contracts, and where the member is under 18 any flight reward redemption needs a parent's or legal guardian's consent. [6]
- Pooling instead of transferring. Family Membership is the authorised way to combine miles: a Family Head aged at least 21 may nominate up to eight family members as Family Guests, and every member joining is subject to a one-month lock-in. [6]
This guide covers miles bought directly from Etihad Guest. Miles earned through flights, hotel stays, shopping and co-branded credit cards, including promotional bonuses, sit outside its scope. [1]

Can you buy Etihad Guest Miles from another member or a reseller?
