Car rental loyalty: compare Hertz, Avis, Enterprise and National

Rental loyalty is local and rate-specific. Compare participating locations, eligible spend, rental counts, redemption coverage and partner-credit choices before selecting a primary programme.

Four rental programmes use different measures

Hertz Gold+

The US Gold+ programme lists Gold, Five Star and President’s Circle. Members can earn points on eligible rentals and redeem them toward rental days. Higher tiers may add point bonuses, vehicle choice or upgrades at participating locations. Published qualification can use rental count or eligible base spend within a calendar year. Check local terms, franchise participation and the exact status period.

Avis Preferred

Avis Preferred’s US programme can award points on qualifying rental spend, with redemption for rental days and selected accessories. It also offers expedited pickup at many locations. Preferred, Preferred Plus and President’s Club have different benefits and qualification rules. Read the current page for the market where you rent; pre-paid rates and optional products may receive different credit.

Enterprise Plus

Enterprise Plus uses qualifying rentals or rental days for its tiers. The US terms list Plus, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Some prepaid OTA rentals, tour packages, replacement vehicles and corporate rates may not qualify. Points are based on eligible spend, not necessarily every tax or fee on the final receipt.

National Emerald Club

Emerald Club uses rental credits and tier benefits, with credits redeemable for free rental days. National’s official guidance describes qualifying rental activity and participating locations; some US and Canadian Enterprise rentals may also count when linked properly. Check current market terms and the specific redemption’s limitations.

Check whether current status can transfer

If you already hold airline or hotel elite status, check for a current car-rental status-match offer before pursuing a tier through rentals. Enterprise Plus and National Emerald Club both publish status-match routes that require a valid status, documentation and programme approval; the matched tier still has maintenance conditions. The match terms and eligible source programmes can change, so use the current official application site.

Check these five items before choosing

  1. Participating locations: check the airports and cities you use and whether the branch is company-owned or a participating franchise.
  2. Rate and booking channel: direct bookings, corporate rates, replacement rentals, prepaid OTA reservations and package bookings may receive different treatment.
  3. Eligible spend: base time-and-mileage charges can be treated separately from taxes, airport fees, insurance, fuel, additional drivers and equipment.
  4. What a reward covers: a free rental day may cover only the base rate; taxes, fees, insurance, fuel or other options can remain payable.
  5. Choose one reward destination: some programmes let you select rental-company points or airline/hotel partner credit for a rental, but not both.

Match the programme to your rental pattern

  • One or two rentals a year: value the member price, pickup process and cancellation terms. Do not change a useful rate just to collect points that are unlikely to reach an award.
  • One regular airport: check whether that branch offers self-service pickup, car choice or a priority lane, and confirm its hours.
  • Rent across several brands: compare local availability, corporate-rate restrictions and whether a partner-reward option is useful to your airline or hotel plan.
  • Business or insurance replacement rentals: check whether your contract permits personal loyalty credit before adding a number to the reservation.
