How to use free-night benefits on hotel award stays
Free-night benefits on hotel award stays are the rules that change what a member pays in points when several award nights are booked together. IHG One Rewards prices award nights one at a time: the points needed for a Reward Night may vary by brand, hotel and day of week, several rooms booked on one date each need their own points, and the Reward Night rules contain no consecutive-night or “fifth night free” provision. [7]

Key takeaways
- IHG One Rewards prices Reward Nights one at a time: the points needed may vary by brand, hotel and day of week, and where several rooms are booked on one date each room needs its own points. The retrieved Reward Night rules contain no consecutive-night or “fifth night free” provision. [7]
- IHG terms include a promotional reward-night discount, described for eligible Platinum Elite, Diamond Elite and IHG One Rewards credit cardholders at participating hotels, with early access for eligible cardmembers. [7]
- A free night is not a free stay: IHG says resort fees and/or service charges at individual hotels may apply and are paid directly to the hotel before check-out [7].
Night-by-night pricing
IHG One Rewards sets the price of a Reward Night by property rather than by length of stay: the number of points required may vary according to several factors, including brand, hotel and day of week. [7] Availability is framed the same way, one night at a time — there are no blackout dates for Reward Nights, but room inventory is limited and subject to prior sale [7] — and the programme’s member page repeats the no-blackout-dates promise in shorter form [3].
The one place where IHG’s retrieved Reward Night rules multiply anything out is rooms, not nights. A Reward Night reservation may cover up to nine rooms on the same stay date at the same property, provided the member’s number is recorded on each reservation, the required points are redeemed for each room and inventory is available. [7] Each room carries its own points cost, and the retrieved rules describe no free-night element for a room or for a night. [7]
For Marriott Bonvoy the extract retrieved for this page runs from the acceptance-of-terms introduction to Section 2.1.c (Non-Qualifying Charges), which means general program terms and points earning. Marriott’s award-redemption provisions sit in later sections that were not retrieved, so this page makes no statement about consecutive-night award pricing or any night-count discount at Marriott — neither that one exists nor that it does not. [5] What the retrieved text does cover: an award redeemed before point forfeiture remains valid unless it is cancelled after the points expiration date, and members need qualifying activity at least once every 24 months to retain points and awards. [5] Property-level variation also appears in the retrieved text: at Atlantis, Paradise Island, an award redemption stay covers the standard room rate and room tax only, with extra-person charges, resort fees, service charges and other property charges left to the member. [5] The booking process itself is set out in booking Marriott Bonvoy awards.
Taxes, fees and what a free night still costs
IHG defines the unit narrowly: each Reward Night is valid only for a standard room for one night, including government-mandated, state and/or locally administered taxes or fees. [7] At Iberostar Beachfront Resorts, members are responsible for paying any local or conditional taxes or fees. [7] Beyond that, extra-person charges including children may apply beyond double occupancy [7]; Reward Nights do not include food and beverage except at all-inclusive properties, gratuities or incidentals, and resort fees and/or service charges at individual hotels may apply, paid directly to the hotel before check-out [7]. Transport to and from the hotel is not included either. [7]
Earning stops at the room. A member staying on a Reward Night or Free Night earns no points or partner rewards on the room rate or its equivalent, although points are awarded on other eligible charges. [7] Tax responsibility sits with the member: Marriott makes members responsible for taxes, duties and other obligations connected with redeeming awards [5].
Room type matters as much as night count, because IHG’s Reward Night is defined for a standard room only [7]. How award levels are described in this encyclopedia is covered under standard award and saver award, and a first redemption is walked through in first hotel award stay, step by step.
Where the benefit is advertised but restricted
IHG’s member page advertises elite perks including Reward Night Discounts alongside bonus points, a welcome amenity and Milestone Rewards [3], and quotes Reward Nights “starting at just 10,000 points” across its hotels [3]. The terms are more careful: eligible Platinum Elite, Diamond Elite and IHG One Rewards credit cardholders may receive exclusive access to promotional discounts on Reward Nights at participating hotels, and eligible cardmembers get early access to those discounts. [7] The retrieved IHG terms give no percentage, no night count and no list of participating hotels [7], so IHG’s advertised elite discount cannot be read as a standing fourth- or fifth-night rule. The terms also refer, in the points-expiry rules, to a single night per year provided to IHG One Rewards credit card holders [7]; that is a one-night instrument rather than a multi-night mechanic.
Advertising is also subject to change. Marriott says it and its travel partners may change, limit, modify or cancel programme rules, rewards and reward levels at any time, with or without notice, even where that affects the value of points already accumulated, and that accumulating points gives members no vested rights [1]; IHG reserves the right to restrict, suspend, modify, discontinue, substitute or cancel the Reward Night programme at any time without notice [7].
Exceptions and limits
- Redemption can be blocked. IHG members may not be able to redeem points for Reward Nights at IHG Army Hotels and Six Senses Hotels Resorts Spas. [7]
- Cancellation and no-show. IHG members who cancel before the hotel’s cancellation time have the points for that reservation redeposited; a no-show is charged under the hotel’s policy, plus tax, per room. [7] At Six Senses properties, cancelling or no-showing after the cancellation window has passed can forfeit the points and/or void the Free Night certificate. [7]
- One elite benefit drops away. IHG member benefits are available on Reward Night stays with the exception of the guaranteed room availability benefit for Platinum Elite and Diamond Elite members. [7]
- Guests named on the booking. Members may add a secondary guest to a Reward Night or Free Night reservation so the guest stays without them, where local law allows; the guest shows photo identification and a payment method for incidentals, and for Greater China the member must contact IHG Customer Care at least seven days before the stay date. [7]
- Nothing to sell or transfer. Marriott points and awards have no cash value and may not be sold, bartered or transferred except as its rules permit [5].
- Outside this page. Single free-night certificates, such as the annual night referenced in IHG’s credit-card terms [7], and points-plus-cash awards are handled on their own pages.
Sources
Sources checked on 18 October 2026. It covers Marriott Bonvoy, IHG One Rewards and World of Hyatt only; Hilton Honors and other hotel programmes are not covered here. The Marriott Bonvoy extract ends at Section 2.1.c and the World of Hyatt extract covers the base terms plus the start of Appendix A, so neither programme’s award-redemption provisions were retrieved for this check and no consecutive-night finding is made for them.
