How to check if an award stay earns points and elite credit

Award stays are hotel nights paid for with loyalty points instead of cash, and the earning rules are set programme by programme rather than by the hotel brand on the door. Wyndham Rewards answers the question directly for its own programme: a night obtained with any form of Free Night is a non-revenue stay that is not a Qualified Stay, and it earns nothing even where resort fees, food and beverage or other incidental charges are added to the bill. [6]

Key takeaways

  • Earning depends on whether the night is a Qualified Stay, and a night obtained with any form of Free Night is expressly excluded from that category. [6]
  • Incidentals do not rescue the night: the exclusion applies even where resort fees, food and beverage, extra-occupant fees or other incidental charges are billed. [6]
  • Points + Cash nights appear in the same list of non-qualified stays but are carved out for their own earning rules, and Base Points are defined to include them. [6]
  • Where the night is booked decides a lot: third-party website and app bookings are not Qualified Stays whatever the rate paid. [6]

What counts as an award stay for earning purposes?

Wyndham Rewards splits hotel nights into nights a member pays for, which can be a Qualified Stay, and nights booked with points, which fall into the various forms of Free Night described in Sections III(C-1) through (E-2) of the programme terms. [6] A third category sits outside that split: Redemption Only Destinations, the label the terms use for Redemption Cottages, where members can redeem points for a stay but cannot earn points or Travel Partner Currency there. [6]

Travel Partner Currency means partner programme currency such as airline miles and rail points, so the exclusion covers more than hotel points alone. [6] A Points + Cash booking makes up a fourth case, and the terms handle it separately. [6]

Do free nights earn points on incidentals?

At Wyndham Rewards they do not, because the exclusion is written to cover the stay rather than the room charge alone. The terms list non-revenue generating rates as a category that is not a Qualified Stay, giving as examples “complimentary room nights and nights obtained using any form of Free Night … even in cases where resort fees, food and beverage, supplemental room occupancy fees for additional guests and/or other incidental fees are charged”. [6]

The same section closes the argument: apart from the separate Points + Cash rules, “stays that are not Qualified Stays will not qualify for Wyndham Rewards points or Travel Partner Currency”. [6] The test in the terms is applied to the rate for the night, so a restaurant bill or a resort fee added to a free-night folio does not turn the stay into an earning one. [6]

Do Points + Cash nights earn points at Wyndham Rewards?

Points + Cash sits on both sides of the line. The terms name “the various forms of Discounted Nights with Points + Cash” in the list of stays that are not Qualified Stays, then except those same forms from that exclusion, so that whatever the dedicated Points + Cash sections set out applies instead. [6]

The earning side appears in the definitions: Base Points are the points a member earns “for completing a Qualified Stay or any variety of Discounted Nights with Points + Cash in accordance with the earning ratio set forth in the chart contained in Section II(B)(5)”. [6] A Points + Cash night can therefore earn Base Points at the ratio published in that chart, even though a straight Free Night in the same room cannot. [6]

What makes a hotel night a Qualified Stay?

Since the award-night exclusion turns on Qualified Stay status, the definition matters in both directions. Wyndham Rewards sets these conditions: [6]

Wyndham Rewards conditions for a Qualified Stay
ConditionWhat the terms require
NightsOne or more consecutive nights at the same Participating Property, meeting any minimum length-of-stay rule that property applies [6]
Minimum spendNightly rates across the stay must add up to at least US$25; taxes, surcharges and other fees are excluded from that total, except at Dolce Hotels and Resorts, Wyndham Grand, Wyndham Hotels and Resorts and Wyndham Garden, where they are included [6]
Booking channelA Participating Hotel stay must be booked on wyndhamhotels.com, the Wyndham Hotels & Resorts app, the member services telephone line, the brand’s official website or its official (800) number, or on property [6]
Member numberProvided during reservation at Participating Destinations and Participating Caesars Rewards Properties [6]
PaymentAll amounts payable for the stay paid under the property’s then-current payment policies [6]
WaterWalkAt WaterWalk Extended Stay by Wyndham, the stay must be in a furnished suite [6]

Third-party channels are excluded outright: bookings made on third-party websites, apps or by telephone with a third party are not Qualified Stays, whatever the rate paid and whether the brand is known at the time of booking. [6] Certain bookings through independent travel agents can still qualify if they meet the nights, spend and payment tests, and the terms ask members to confirm with the agent before booking. [6]

Exceptions and limits

  • Properties outside the programme. Echo Suites Extended Stay by Wyndham does not participate in Wyndham Rewards, and Travelodge properties outside the United States, Canada and Mexico do not participate either. [6]
  • One named hotel. Wyndham Concorde Isla Margarita is not a Participating Hotel and does not allow earning of points or Travel Partner Currency. [6]
  • Business programme. The consumer terms do not apply to the Wyndham Rewards Business programme except where specifically incorporated into that programme’s own terms. [6]
  • Status credit is a separate question. Wyndham Rewards keeps Member Levels in Section IV of its terms, apart from the earning rules in Section II, so a points answer does not settle tier credit; where a programme has not stated whether a redemption night counts toward status, treat the answer as unpublished. [6]
  • Rules can change. Wyndham Rewards may modify, alter, suspend, delete or add terms at any time without notice [6], and Marriott Bonvoy reserves a similar right to change programme rules with or without notice, even where that affects the value of points already accumulated and without giving members vested rights in them [1].

Frequently asked questions

Do you earn points on a free night at Wyndham Rewards?

No. A night obtained with any form of Free Night is treated as non-revenue generating and is not a Qualified Stay, and non-qualified stays do not qualify for Wyndham Rewards points or Travel Partner Currency. [6]

Do incidentals earn points when the room itself was booked with points?

At Wyndham Rewards, no: the exclusion applies even where resort fees, food and beverage, extra-occupant fees or other incidental charges are billed for the stay. [6]

Do Points + Cash nights count as award stays?

Wyndham Rewards lists Points + Cash nights among stays that are not Qualified Stays but excepts them from that exclusion, and defines Base Points to include Points + Cash nights at the ratio in its earning chart. [6]

Can you earn points at a hotel you can only book with points?

No. At Redemption Only Destinations, members can redeem points for stays but cannot earn points or Travel Partner Currency there. [6]

Does booking through a third-party site affect earning?

Yes. Third-party website, app and telephone bookings are not Qualified Stays, whatever the rate paid and whether the brand is known at the time of booking. [6]
