How to earn Marriott Bonvoy elite status

Marriott Bonvoy elite status is the tier structure of Marriott International's hotel loyalty programme, which the programme's benefits navigation lists as six levels — Member, Silver Elite, Gold Elite, Platinum Elite, Titanium Elite and Ambassador Elite — with progress counted in Elite Night Credits earned on qualifying nights and a separate lifetime track whose Silver, Gold and Platinum levels never expire. [4] [3] [1]

Key takeaways

  • Bonvoy names six levels, from Member to Ambassador Elite, plus lifetime Silver, Gold and Platinum status that the programme describes as never expiring. [4] [1]
  • The unit of progress is the Elite Night Credit, earned only for a night inside a Qualifying Stay, and those credits count toward both Elite Status and Lifetime Elite Status requirements. [3]
  • Elite Status is Marriott's property rather than the member's, cannot be sold or transferred, can be forfeited for rule breaches, and can be changed by Marriott at any time with or without notice. [3] [2]

The six levels and the lifetime track

The Bonvoy benefits navigation lists the membership levels in ascending order as Member, Silver Elite, Gold Elite, Platinum Elite, Titanium Elite and Ambassador Elite. [4] Membership is free, and the programme rules make it available to individuals who are at least 18 years old or have reached the age of majority where they live. [3]

Alongside the ordinary levels the programme runs a lifetime track: the lifetime benefits page describes Silver, Gold and Platinum status that never expires. [1] Lifetime Elite Status also appears in the program rules as a defined part of the programme, listed alongside Elite Status and Elite Night Credits as value that belongs to Marriott. [3]

Whatever level a member holds, the rules state that the programme, points, awards, Elite Status, Lifetime Elite Status and Elite Night Credits are the company's sole property and not the member's, carry no cash value, and may not be sold, bartered, transferred, assigned or exchanged except where the rules expressly allow it; limited transfers on death or divorce may be permitted only as expressly authorised by Marriott, subject to documentation and at its discretion. [3]

How qualification is counted

Elite Night Credits are listed among the things a member earns at participating hotels, and a credit is earned only for a night that falls inside a Qualifying Stay, which the rules call a Qualifying Night. [3] Those credits are what count toward meeting the Elite Status and Lifetime Elite Status requirements. [3]

Points and status progress are separate streams on the same stay. A member earns base points on qualifying charges plus an elite bonus whose size depends on the achieved Elite Status, and the rules refer readers to their status section for the bonus amounts. [3] The rules also set out a separate list of non-qualifying charges that earn no points, beginning with complimentary services and award redemptions. [3]

Tier benefits include the Elite Welcome Gift. [3]

Benefits and the Ambassador question

Tier status unlocks benefits at participating hotels, and the Elite Welcome Gift is named in the rules: at Atlantis, Paradise Island, the breakfast option that comes with the Elite Welcome Gift is not available. [3] The rules also warn that at properties and collections that participate only in a limited or unique capacity — including All-Inclusive by Marriott Bonvoy resorts, Homes & Villas, MGM Collection hotels, The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection and Design Hotels — particular benefits, amenities and services may not be available even where the rules do not explicitly exclude them. [3]

Ambassador Elite is the highest of the six levels named in the benefits navigation. [4] Status earned through co-branded payment cards is outside this page's scope; the card route is covered separately. [3]

Renewal, soft landings and account activity

The rules set a rolling activity requirement for the account: a member must have Qualifying Activity at least once every 24 months to retain accumulated points, awards and other benefits. [3] Qualifying Activity includes earning or redeeming points or miles, buying points, completing a Qualifying Stay and converting points or miles with designated partners, while gifting, transferring or receiving points from another member does not count. [3]

An account with no Qualifying Activity for 24 consecutive months forfeits all accumulated points, awards and other benefits, and the rules say these cannot be reinstated; an account inactive for five consecutive years may be deactivated. [3] Points held in Lifetime Elite Status accounts are not currently subject to expiration, though Marriott reserves the right to apply an expiration policy to those accounts in future. [3]

The published ways to lose status on these pages are cancellation by the member, which forfeits any achieved Elite Status and Lifetime Elite Status immediately and without reinstatement, and action by Marriott, which may cancel, suspend or forfeit Elite Status and Lifetime Elite Status where it believes the rules have been broken. [3]

Exceptions and limits

  • Non-participating properties. Bulgari Hotels and Resorts, The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore and other listed properties do not participate in the programme unless expressly stated, so a stay there does not earn within Bonvoy. [3]
  • Properties that leave. If a property exits the programme, a member earns no Qualifying Nights toward Elite Status there, even for a reservation made before the exit date. [3]
  • Limited participation. At properties and experiences that participate in a limited or unique capacity, individual benefits may be unavailable without being explicitly excluded in the rules. [3]
  • Rules can change. Marriott may change, limit, modify or cancel programme rules, rewards and reward levels at any time with or without notice, even where that affects the value of points already accumulated, and accumulating points creates no vested rights. [2] [3]
  • Language and version. The program rules quoted here are the version updated October 2026, and where the English and a translated version differ, the English version governs. [3]
