How to earn and retain JAL Mileage Bank status

JAL Mileage Bank status is tracked through FLY ON Points and membership levels, which JAL presents as a subject separate from flight mileage on its JMB pages. [3] [4] [5] [6]

Facts checked: 18 October 2026

Key takeaways

  • JAL's JMB partner pages link to FLY ON Points and membership levels as a topic of its own, distinct from the "What is Flight Mileage?" section. [3] [4] [5] [6]
  • FLY ON members receive additional bonus miles on each flight based on their FLY ON membership level, according to the Malaysia Airlines, Iberia and British Airways pages. [4] [5] [6]
  • Flight mileage is credited by booking class, and the rates differ between partner airlines for the same class letter. [3] [4] [5] [6]

FLY ON status: what is published

JAL lists "FLY ON Points and Membership Levels" in the JMB navigation next to the flight-mileage topics, which shows that status progress and mileage earning are handled as separate subjects. [3] [4] [5] [6]

One published benefit is tied directly to the level a member holds: the Malaysia Airlines, Iberia and British Airways pages describe a FLY ON Program Mile-Up Bonus under which FLY ON members receive additional bonus miles for each flight based on their FLY ON membership level. [4] [5] [6]

For the wider picture, compare the cross-programme tables at status thresholds in major programmes and read the underlying ideas in elite status and status points.

Earning flight mileage into a JMB account

Flight mileage is credited automatically to a JMB account when a member travels on eligible flights. [3] [4] [5] [6] To make that happen, the membership number must be given in nine digits when the reservation is made or at check-in, and every ticket must be issued in the member's name. [3] [4] [5] [6] Members whose number has fewer than nine digits add a zero at the front, so 1234567 is entered as 001234567. [3] [4] [5] [6]

The mileage awarded for a flight is the sector mileage specified for the sectors flown, multiplied by the accumulation rate that applies to the fare of the purchased ticket. [3] [4] [5] [6] Sector mileage for JMB is calculated on IATA Ticketed Point Mileage, and it is revised each July and January using the IATA TPM released in the previous spring and autumn. [3] [4] [5] [6]

If the number was not given before departure, a member can ask for post-flight credit, and all such requests must be made within six months of the flight date. [3] [4] [5] [6]

Rates set partner by partner

There is no single JMB rate for a class letter: each partner page lists its own applicable booking classes and accumulation rates. [3] [4] [5] [6]

  • SriLankan Airlines (UL). Business class J, C and D earn 125% and I earns 100%; economy Y, B, P and H earn 100%, K, W, M and E earn 70%, L, R, V and S earn 50%, and N, Q and O earn 30%. [3]
  • Malaysia Airlines (MH), departures from 1 April 2025. First class and Business Suite F and A earn 150%, business J, C and D earn 125%, Z earns 70%; economy Y and B earn 100%, H, K and M earn 70%, L, V and S earn 50%, and N, Q and O earn 30%. [4]
  • Malaysia Airlines (MH), departures up to 31 March 2025. Z earned 100%, Y, B and H earned 100%, K and M earned 50%, and L, V and S earned 25%; F and A earned 150% and J, C and D earned 125% in both periods. [4]
  • Iberia (IB). First class is listed with no rate; business J, C, D and R earn 125% and I earns 70%; premium economy W, E and T earn 100%; economy Y and B earn 100%, H and K earn 70%, L, M, V, F, Z and G earn 50%, and S, N, O, Q and A earn 25%. [5]
  • British Airways (BA). First F and A earn 150%, business J, C, D, R and I earn 125%, premium economy W, E and T earn 100%, economy Y and B earn 100%, H earns 70%, K, M, L, V, S and N earn 50%, and Q, O and G earn 25%. [6]

Inclusive Tour Fares earn mileage when they are booked in one of the listed classes, and a ticket in any class that is not listed is ineligible regardless of the fare paid; JAL also notes that the rate for some fares may differ from the published table. [3] [4] [5] [6]

Where credit does not accrue

All four pages list the same situations in which flight mileage is not credited: travelling under a different name; award tickets, non-revenue tickets and special discounted fares such as travel agent, tour conductor and infant fares; cargo and charter flights, with an exception for JAL International Flights; tickets or booking classes that are ineligible under agreements with partner airlines; a flight that is not boarded for any reason, including delay or cancellation; and a flight that has been registered to a frequent flyer programme other than JMB. [3] [4] [5] [6]

Codeshare flights earn mileage only when they are operated by oneworld alliance airlines and carry the partner's flight number — UL numbers on the SriLankan page, MH numbers on the Malaysia Airlines page. [3] [4] The Iberia page adds Air Nostrum (YW) and Iberia Express (I2) with IB or I2 numbers, and the British Airways page adds subsidiaries BA CityFlyer (CJ) and EuroFlyer (A0) alongside BA numbers. [5] [6]

Two limits apply to this whole page. First, it covers crediting rules published on the Japan–English JAL pages for SriLankan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Iberia and British Airways, checked on 18 October 2026; JAL's own flights and other oneworld partners are outside these sources. [3] [4] [5] [6] Second, because the sources do not publish FLY ON thresholds or a qualification period, nothing here describes how a member moves between levels or keeps one from year to year.
