How to use lounge access during delays

Lounge access during delays is what a lounge pass or membership still allows once a flight is late or cancelled. The conditions of use for Priority Pass and LoungeKey both make admission conditional on a valid means of access, a valid boarding pass and any further identification the lounge asks for, and neither document states that a delay or cancellation creates, extends or renews access. Key takeaways

  • Priority Pass and LoungeKey both test three things at the door: a valid means of access, a valid boarding pass, and any additional identification the lounge requires. [4] [5]
  • Both say a means of access does not guarantee entry or continued entry; capacity restrictions and the individual lounge's decision apply. [4] [5]
  • Priority Pass states that a customer arriving outside the time on a Pre-book reservation may be refused or admitted late only as capacity permits, with any grace period set by the lounge. [4]
  • Neither programme obliges a lounge to announce flights, and neither accepts liability where a customer fails to board. [4] [5]

Three checks at the door

The Priority Pass conditions used here are effective from 26 March 2026 [4], and the LoungeKey conditions from 28 June 2023 [5]. Priority Pass describes admittance as strictly conditional on a valid means of access, a valid boarding pass and any additional identification the lounge may require, which can include a passport, national identity card or driving licence. [4] LoungeKey applies the same three-part test with the same list of identification. [5]

Each lounge and merchant sets its own terms, shown in that location's description on the programme website or app, and presenting a means of access means accepting them. [4] [5] Neither document defines what counts as a valid boarding pass when a flight is cancelled, and neither sets out a separate procedure for a traveller rebooked onto a later flight. [4] [5]

A means of access is non-transferable and usable only up to and including its expiry date; LoungeKey adds that use runs until the expiry date shown on the digital membership card or until the benefit offered by the payment card provider or other organisation ends. [4] [5] A lounge or merchant reached with an invalid means of access is charged to the customer, guests included. [4] [5] Visits may also be capped: Priority Pass, the payment card provider or another organisation can limit how many times a means of access is used within a period and within the same arrival or departure location. [4] [5]

Turning up unbooked

Neither programme promises a seat. Priority Pass states that providing a means of access does not guarantee access or continued access and is subject to capacity restrictions. [4] LoungeKey uses the same wording. [5]

Both documents hand the operating decisions to the lounge: the programme has no control over whether a customer is admitted, how many people are allowed in at any one time, the facilities, opening and closing times, the length of time a customer may spend inside, or charges above those included. [4] [5] Neither programme accepts liability where a lounge refuses entry because of technical problems with visit-registration equipment. [4] [5]

Guests must register and enter at the same time as the member. [4] [5] Access for children varies by lounge and is at the lounge's discretion, so the location description is the place to check. [4] [5] In Europe, some lounges and merchants sit inside designated Schengen areas, where access is only provided to customers travelling between Schengen countries. [4] [5]

Pre-booked slots and late arrival

Priority Pass offers Pre-book as a way to reserve lounge access for a designated date and time through the programme website or app, with the booking confirmation serving as the means of access. [4] A reservation is non-transferable and valid only on the date and time shown. [4] Priority Pass does not guarantee access with Pre-book; admission remains at the lounge's sole discretion. [4]

The late-arrival rule is explicit: a customer or guest arriving outside the designated time may be refused entry, or admitted late only as capacity permits, and any grace period is at the lounge's discretion. [4] That wording is built around the time on the booking rather than the reason for arriving late, and the Pre-book terms set out no separate treatment for a flight that is running behind schedule. [4]

Two further Pre-book rules matter when plans move. If programme membership expires or becomes invalid after the reservation is made but before the visit, the customer is not eligible for access. [4] If the lounge itself closes or is removed from the programme after booking, the means of access is cancelled and the customer receives a refund to the original payment method, or the entitlement is reinstated where it has not expired. [4] Amendments and cancellations must follow the instructions in the booking email within the timeframe in the lounge's Pre-book terms, and no refund is issued for a cancellation outside that timeframe or for failing to use the service as the means of access requires. [4]

LoungeKey's conditions are shorter on this point: pre-booking may be offered at an additional charge, managed by LoungeKey or by the lounge, with the provider named on the pre-booking page and in the service description, and the service depends on the customer complying with the conditions of use and the lounge's own terms. [5] They publish no late-arrival provision of the kind Priority Pass uses. [5]

Exceptions and limits

  • Airline-run clubs.
  • No fixed time limit. Neither document sets a maximum stay; the lounge decides how long a customer may remain inside. [4] [5]
  • Flight calls. Lounges have no obligation to announce flight information, and both programmes disclaim liability for direct or indirect loss where a customer or guest fails to board. [4] [5]
  • Conduct. Entry is subject to the lounge's dress and behaviour rules, and anyone not complying may be asked to leave; neither programme is liable for loss where a lounge refuses admission for non-compliance. [4] [5]
  • Extra spend. Alcoholic drinks are at the lounge's discretion and may be limited or unavailable, additional or premium consumption is paid to the lounge directly, and some locations may charge for access above the entitlement. [4] [5]
