Star Alliance vs SkyTeam: Published Benefits Compared
Star Alliance vs SkyTeam is a field-by-field comparison of the two alliances on tier recognition, lounge eligibility, baggage rules and stated exceptions, using only what the alliances or their member programmes publish themselves. Star Alliance's own benefits page states a network of 26 member airlines, 1,150+ destinations and access to 1,000 lounges worldwide [1].

Key takeaways
- Star Alliance's benefits page states 26 member airlines, 1,150+ destinations and access to 1,000 lounges worldwide [1].
- The Star Alliance Upgrade Award is an alliance-wide product from EGYPTAIR Plus, with carrier-specific timing for ANA and Asiana [3].
The four fields side by side
Star Alliance's figures include its member airline count, 1,150+ destinations, and 1,000 lounges worldwide [1]. Miles can be earned and redeemed across all member airlines [1].
| Field | Star Alliance | SkyTeam |
|---|---|---|
| Tier recognition | Gold Track is an airport benefit [1] | |
| Lounge eligibility | Access to 1,000 lounges worldwide [1] | |
| Exceptions | Upgrade-award restrictions, including carrier-specific request windows for ANA and Asiana [3] |
The table is lopsided by design: the SkyTeam column records an absence of checked material, not a finding that SkyTeam publishes nothing [1]. Counts are point-in-time as well — the same Star Alliance page carries a news item dated 31 March 2026 on ITA Airways joining and one dated 23 June 2026 headed "Asiana Airlines to Exit Star Alliance" [1].
Tier recognition
Star Alliance gives loyalty its own section, headed Loyalty and Recognition, with Benefits and Privileges and Earn and Redeem beneath it, and names Gold Track among its airport services [1].
How a single airline's own status maps onto an alliance tier is a separate question, covered under alliance tier equivalence.
Lounge eligibility and baggage rules
Star Alliance has 1,000 lounges worldwide [1]. A new Star Alliance lounge is at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport Terminal 3 [1].
Baggage is among Star Alliance's airport services [1].
Upgrade awards: published Star Alliance terms
The Star Alliance Upgrade Award is an alliance-wide product from member programme EGYPTAIR Plus [3]. It is booked online against a paid ticket, requested after that ticket is issued and no less than 24 hours before scheduled departure, with two carrier-specific variations: ANA accepts requests up to 56 days ahead, and Asiana only on the date of travel [3]. Miles are deducted from the EGYPTAIR Plus account when the upgrade is confirmed, provided a seat is available [3].
The upgrade moves a passenger one cabin only and double upgrades are not permitted; eligible fares are Y–B for economy to business and C–D for business to first, while economy to premium economy is described as not yet available [3]. Miles are calculated per person, per segment, on the day of the request and are subject to change, and accrual follows the class originally ticketed [3]. A member may request for up to four passengers in one booking and must submit the request personally; awards are valid only on participating Star Alliance carriers and not on codeshare flights [3].
Exceptions and limits
- Upgrades are subject to the operating carrier's rules and policies, and some Star Alliance carriers may impose a period in which no upgrade award is available [3].
- The award cannot be used on industry-discount, agency-discount, free or award tickets, cannot be arranged at check-in or before boarding, and waitlists are not permitted [3].
- Star Alliance connecting partners, such as HO, do not provide the upgrade award service, so an itinerary including one falls outside the product [3].
- Cancelling the upgrade also cancels the original lower-class reservation; a new booking must be made and the upgrade requested again at least 24 hours before departure [3].
- An unused upgrade can be refunded against 5% of the miles deducted, and expired miles are non-refundable; after a no-show the member travels in economy and miles are refunded with refund fees [3].
- Rules move over time: the Star Alliance news list carries an item dated 23 June 2026 on Asiana Airlines exiting the alliance, while the upgrade page still publishes an Asiana-specific request window [1] [3].
- The hard limit of this page is its evidence: no SkyTeam rule page was available to check, so no SkyTeam eligibility condition, allowance or exception is reported [1] [3].
