COURSE
Start here: ANZ Rewards — earning Reward Points, what does not earn, claiming rewards and expiry
ANZ Rewards is the credit card rewards programme of Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited, in which Reward Points are added to or subtracted from a Points Record that determines when you become entitled to claim a reward [1]. The terms define "we", "us" and "our" as Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited [1]. This course takes six short steps through earning, claiming and expiry, and ends with five checks to run on your own card account.
Facts checked: 19 October 2026
Key takeaways
- Reward Points can only accrue to account holders, and purchases made by an additional cardholder accrue to the account holder's Points Record [1].
- Points are earned at the applicable earn rate for each dollar spent on purchases, accrue daily and appear on the Points Record up to 5 business days after ANZ processes a purchase [1].
- Among the transactions that do not earn are interest and bank fees, Government Charges and ATO payments, BPAY and Post Billpay, balance transfers, cash advances and AFTs [1].
- Points ordinarily expire within 36 months of 31 December of the year in which they were added [1].
- Only the account holder may claim rewards, and points are deducted from the Points Record when ANZ receives the claim [1].
What you will be able to do after this course
- Say who may earn and who may claim on an ANZ Rewards card account.
- Read the written earn rate, band and cap advice for your card and describe what it means for a statement period.
- Recognise the payments and events that earn nothing or take points back.
- Find your expiry dates, statement query deadline and the route to a claim.
Step 1: What ANZ Rewards is and who it suits
You will learn: when the terms apply, who is who on a card account, and which cards the programme covers.
The terms apply to you and any additional cardholder when you activate your card account [1]. The account holder is the person in whose name the card account is kept and who is responsible for all transactions on it, while an additional cardholder may transact but cannot earn or redeem Reward Points [1]. A card is an ANZ credit card that is a classic card, a platinum card, a black card, an ANZ Rewards Visa PAYCARD or any other card notified to account holders as being a card for these terms [1]. The terms describe no status tiers [1].
ANZ may amend the terms at any time by giving at least 30 days' notice in writing or by public notice [1], and may at any time without notice withdraw, limit, modify, cancel or increase the continued availability of any reward or the number of Reward Points required to claim a particular reward [1]. Except where a law that cannot be excluded applies, ANZ makes no warranties about the type, quality or fitness of rewards, and where it is entitled to do so it limits its liability for breach of an implied term to replacing or repairing the reward or paying the cost of doing so, and supplying the services again or paying the cost of having them supplied again [1]. If you or an additional cardholder breach the terms or the ANZ Credit Cards Conditions of Use, ANZ may suspend or exclude you from the programme [1]. Any tax liability or government charge arising from card use or a reward is your responsibility [1], and the programme relies on ASIC relief from certain provisions of the Corporations Act 2001 [1]. ANZ Rewards is for holders of an ANZ Rewards credit card account, because rewards are claimed against the Points Record kept for that account [1].

Step 2: How earning works
You will learn: how points are earned, how banded rates work, and what changes on 28 October 2026.
Reward Points accrue only to account holders, and points from an additional cardholder's purchases accrue to the account holder's Points Record [1]. Points are earned at the applicable earn rate for each dollar spent on purchases using the card account, subject to the exclusions in clauses 7, 8 and 9, accrue daily and appear on your Points Record up to 5 business days after ANZ processes a purchase [1]. Some card accounts have banded earn rates, so different rates may apply depending on the cumulative dollar value of purchases in the current statement period: the rate on purchases made once total purchases exceed $1,000 may differ from the rate on the first $999, and that cumulative value resets at the start of each statement period [1]. ANZ advises in writing of the points you could earn per dollar and any bands at opening, and otherwise advises under clause 27 if that number decreases or a band changes in a way that reduces your ability to earn, but need not write to you when it increases [1]. For ANZ Rewards Visa PAYCARD accounts, points are earned only on purchases using the 16-digit card/account number, not the nine-digit account number on the reverse [1].
From 28 October 2026, clauses 2 and 3 refer to eligible purchases, and clause 4 allows banded earn rates as advised by ANZ and/or a cap as advised by ANZ, in which case you earn in a statement period only on eligible purchases up to and including the cap, with caps resetting each statement period [1]. Clause 5 adds caps to the written advice at opening and to the changes ANZ must tell you about [1], clause 6 refers to eligible purchases [1], and new definitions cover cap, cardholder, current spend, eligible purchase and refund, while references to card account become Credit Card Account throughout [1].

Step 3: What does not earn and when points come off
You will learn: which transactions earn nothing, and when ANZ deducts or cancels points.
No points are earned on interest charges or bank fees, ANZ Credit Card Insurance premiums (that insurance has not been available to new customers since 17 March 2018), Government Charges or payments to the Australian Taxation Office, transactions using the BPAY scheme or Post Billpay, card account adjustments from disputed transactions or otherwise, balance transfers, cash advances or AFTs, or transactions identified to ANZ by the merchant or an intermediary as falling into one of those categories [1]. ANZ relies on merchant and intermediary information, so some transactions may be treated as ineligible even where they do not fall within those categories [1]. No points are earned while the card account is suspended or while you or an additional cardholder are in breach [1].
A refund, a reimbursement for charges previously incurred or a chargeback to the card account causes points to be deducted, calculated by reference to your relevant earn rate at the time the reimbursement was processed by ANZ [1]. From 28 October 2026, a replacement clause 9 provides that ANZ can deduct points and adjust your current spend, with the deduction based on the relevant earn rates (including bands, caps and your current spend) when the refund or chargeback is processed rather than when the original transaction was, and where a cap applies and has been reached, the deduction is based on the portion of the refund below the cap, so the points deducted could differ from those earned [1]. ANZ may cancel points without notice if it cancels or suspends your card or account, including after an Event of Default or where ANZ suspects, on reasonable grounds, that you have been operating your Credit Card Account fraudulently, and points may be forfeited if you die [1]. An AFT is an Account Funding Transaction initiated by a Visa Direct enabled merchant or other person to debit an ANZ credit card and transfer funds to a nominated account or digital wallet [1]; a Balance Transfer is funds credited to another credit, charge or store card account held by you or a third party which is not an ANZ account [1]; Government Charges include, but are not limited to, payments for goods, services, charges or levies to local, state or federal government, statutory authorities or related agencies, in Australia and overseas [1].

Step 4: Claiming rewards
You will learn: who may claim, where rewards are listed, and how a claim affects your Points Record.
Reward Points may not be transferred or sold, are not property, have no monetary value and can only be used to claim rewards, with no refunds for points not used [1]. Rewards and the points required are set out on anzrewards.com, and special conditions may apply to individual rewards [1]. Only the account holder may claim, entitlement is based on the Points Record, and nothing is claimable while the card is suspended or the account is in default [1]. Claims go through the ANZ App, ANZ Internet Banking or the ANZ Rewards Centre on 1300 367 763, rewards are subject to availability and substitutions may be necessary [1], and Points Plus Pay lets you use points and pay a monetary amount by debiting your card [1].
Rewards cannot be taken by pooling points across different card accounts [1]. Unless ANZ advises otherwise, rewards cannot be returned for points, cashed in or exchanged, or replaced if lost, stolen or otherwise destroyed [1], and unless ANZ advises in writing otherwise rewards are not delivered outside Australia [1]. Points used to claim a reward are deducted when ANZ receives your request, and the adjustment shows in your next rewards statement [1].

Step 5: Expiry, statements and disputes
You will learn: when points expire, how statements arrive, and the deadlines for queries.
Points ordinarily expire within 36 months of 31 December of the year in which the point was added to a Points Record, and unused points are cancelled after expiry [1]. If the card account closes, unused points must be used within 90 days of closure [1], and if the programme is terminated any claim must be made within 90 days of the termination date [1]. You receive a rewards statement at least once per calendar year, may register for electronic statements, and ANZ may vary their format without notice [1].
Enquiries about a rewards statement must be made within 90 days of the statement date, and other questions or disputes within 12 months of the incident giving rise to them, in writing to the Rewards Centre with a legible copy of the relevant receipt or statement where relevant [1]. ANZ investigates and advises the outcome, and if you are not satisfied you may use the complaints handling procedure in the ANZ Credit Cards Conditions of Use [1].
