How to handle a United same-day change and standby

United same-day change means moving to a different United Airlines flight on the same calendar day as the ticket you already hold, and same-day standby means asking to be seated on another flight that day if a seat opens. Whether either is possible, and on what conditions, comes from the fare rules, ticket terms and Contract of Carriage attached to the booking, read alongside the United MileagePlus programme rules. Key takeaways

  • United's MileagePlus Rules put the Contract of Carriage, the fare rules and the ticket's own terms alongside the programme rules, and say award tickets may be subject to the operating carrier's Contract of Carriage, ticket terms and re-accommodation policies. [4]
  • Premier benefits such as bonus miles, Premier Access, baggage allowance and upgrade benefits follow the member's Premier status at the time of travel, not the status held when the ticket was bought or booked. [4]
  • Once an award ticket is issued, a service charge may be imposed for each change or cancellation the member requests. [4]
  • The MileagePlus number has to stay on the reservation, and on any later reservation created from it, for the whole of the original and future travel, or the benefits attached to that booking can fall away. [4]

Which rules decide whether a same-day change is allowed?

United's programme rules state that a member who fails to follow the Rules, United's Contract of Carriage, United's fare rules or partner terms may face remedies against the account. [4] The Rules add that United has the sole right to interpret and apply them. [4]

Fare type shapes what a ticket carries with it. United's Rules say that some fares and tickets — including special promotional accommodations, rentals, industry discounts, consolidation tickets, group rates and special promotional rates such as PassPlus — may, at United's discretion, be excluded from eligibility for benefits, Premier status, mileage accrual and Premier Qualifying Credits. [4]

Award tickets sit inside the same framework: a MileagePlus award ticket may be subject to the taxes, fees, tariffs, Contract of Carriage, ticket terms and re-accommodation policies of the carrier on which the travel is scheduled. [4]

Which Premier status counts when you travel?

Benefits tied to Premier status are based on the member's Premier status at the time of travel, not at the time the air travel is purchased, booked or reserved. [4] United lists bonus miles, Premier Access, baggage allowance and upgrade benefits as examples of those benefits. [4]

Holding on to them depends on the account staying attached to the booking. A member receiving benefits at booking, check-in, travel or any other activity where programme benefits are provided must maintain the MileagePlus account number throughout the entire reservation and any subsequent reservations created from the original reservation, and for the entire duration of the original and future travel. [4]

Companions are caught by the same rule. If a companion obtains benefits by virtue of a member's status and that member is no longer travelling on the original reservation, the companion stops being eligible for the Premier and other benefits that came from the member's status. [4]

Members holding status through the MileagePlus Premier Status Match Challenge can enjoy Premier benefits on United- or United Express-operated flights by giving their account number when making reservations or at check-in. [5] During the Challenge Period they may not have access to all reciprocal Premier benefits with United's partners, including Star Alliance lounges. [5]

The Premier tiers are Premier Silver, Premier Gold, Premier Platinum and Premier 1K. [6]

What can a change cost on an award ticket?

United's Rules allow a service charge to be imposed for each change or cancellation a member requests after an award ticket or other award has been issued. [4]

Award travel can also carry departure taxes, federal inspection fees, passenger facility charges and other fees, charges or taxes, and the person using the award is responsible for paying the ones that apply. [4]

If an award is redeemed and later cancelled or returned in accordance with the applicable programme rules or ticketed fare rules, the miles taken for it are redeposited subject to a service charge, and some awards state that they are not eligible for redeposit of miles at all. [4]

United also keeps the right to increase the mileage, cash required, applicable co-pays or number of certificates needed for an award, and to withdraw awards or impose restrictions on an award or its redemption at any time. [4]

What happens if the schedule changes instead?

An award for travel is valid only to destinations served both at the time the award ticket is issued and at the time of departure, and neither United nor its partners are liable for schedule changes that result in the cancellation of service to a destination. [4]

The Rules also describe what can follow a failure to comply with published award rules for air travel: at United's sole discretion, the member may be accommodated on a different flight than originally selected, seated in a lower class of service, denied ticketing or boarding, or subject to other action under the Rules, without compensation. [4]

Exceptions and limits

  • United may terminate the programme in whole or in part, or change the Rules, benefits, conditions of participation, Premier qualification criteria or mileage levels at any time, with or without notice, even where changes affect the value of status, benefits, mileage or certificates already accumulated. [4]
  • The Rules cannot be superseded or changed except in writing from United, and the version published on united.com supersedes any earlier or conflicting version. [4]
  • Mileage redemption activity may be prohibited in any MileagePlus account, or suspended for a period after the account is opened. [4]
  • Status matched through the Premier Status Match Challenge lasts for the 120-day Challenge Period and expires afterwards unless the matched level or a higher level of Premier status is earned or awarded first, and Premier membership materials are not issued for the Challenge Period. [5]
  • Premier status earned in 2026 is valid through January 2028, and the qualification window for that status runs from 1 January to 31 December 2026. [6]

Frequently asked questions

Does my Premier status count from when I booked or from when I fly?

From when you fly. Premier benefits are based on the Premier status held at the time of travel, not at the time the air travel was purchased, booked or reserved. [4]

Can United charge a fee to change an award ticket?

Yes. After an award ticket or other award is issued, a service charge may be imposed for each change or cancellation the member requests. [4]

Will my companion keep status benefits if I no longer travel on the reservation?

No. A companion who obtained benefits through a member's status is no longer eligible once that member is no longer travelling on the original reservation. [4]

Does status from the Premier Status Match Challenge include partner lounge access?

During the Challenge Period, members may not have access to all reciprocal Premier benefits with United's partners, including Star Alliance lounges. [5]
