How to earn Velocity Points with credit cards

Velocity Points credit cards are credit cards that earn Velocity Points, either as a card named on Velocity's own eligibility list or through an eligible rewards programme that transfers points into a Velocity account. [1] [4] This page sets out what Velocity's published rules say about those cards and is not a recommendation of any issuer.

Key takeaways

  • Velocity publishes a list of "eligible Velocity Points earning credit cards"; holding and using one adds one extra Base Point per $1 spent on eligible Virgin Australia domestic and short-haul international flights booked on or after 2 April 2025, taking the base earn from 4 to 5 Points per $1. [1] [4]
  • The extra point depends on having earned Points as the primary cardholder from spend on that card in the 12 months before flying; the card does not have to still be open when you fly. [1]
  • Velocity's terms say eligible earn transactions and rates differ between partners and offers, and direct members to the partner's rates and terms before transacting. [5]
  • Points earned or transferred into Velocity normally move the Points Expiry Date out 24 months, but points received through Family Pooling or a family transfer extend it by up to one month only. [1] [5]

How the cards feed Points into Velocity

Velocity's membership terms describe Points as a benefit earned when you buy products or services from partners that are eligible to earn Points, and state that eligible transactions and the terms on which Points are earned differ between partners and offers and can vary with your Status. [5] The terms also say you may need to enter into separate terms and conditions with the partner or business supplying the good or service, and that those terms apply directly between you and them. [5] For current partner earn rates and conditions, the terms point members to the partner pages on the Velocity website. [5]

The extra Base Point on Virgin Australia flights. For eligible Virgin Australia domestic and short-haul international flights booked on or after 2 April 2025, Velocity members earn 4 Base Points per $1 spent, and members with an eligible Velocity Points earning credit card earn 5. [1] [4] The additional Base Point cannot be earned on Virgin Australia marketed flights that are operated by a partner airline. [4]

To be treated as an eligible credit cardholder, a member needs a complete Velocity member profile and must have earned Points as the primary cardholder on an eligible card from spend in the 12 months before the flight. [1] The card does not need to be active at the time of flying and may be cancelled or expired. [1] Velocity says it may update the list of eligible cards from time to time. [1] [4] A completed account profile is also what the terms require before a member can receive Velocity Points earning Credit Card bonuses or transfer Points. [5]

Status bonuses sit on top. Members with Status also earn Tier Bonus Points on Virgin Australia flights: 50% of the Base Points for Silver, 75% for Gold and 100% for Platinum and Platinum Plus, based on the Status held at the time of flying rather than at booking. [4] Tier Bonus Points are not earned on Economy Lite fares. [1] [4]

Which cards Velocity lists

Velocity describes the list as the credit cards eligible for the additional Base Point earn, and published these names as at 2 April 2025: American Express Velocity Gold, Velocity Escape, Velocity Escape Plus, Velocity Platinum and Velocity Business cards; Bank of Queensland Signature Velocity and Specialist Platinum Velocity cards; Westpac Altitude Mastercard Platinum and Westpac Altitude Mastercard Black; and Virgin Money Virgin Australia Velocity Flyer and Velocity High Flyer cards. [4]

Being on the list establishes eligibility for the flight earn uplift only; the list is not a ranking of the cards. [4]

Transferring bank points instead

Velocity's earning page says members can transfer rewards points to Velocity from eligible partners, including selected retailers, hotel partners and credit card partners. [1] A transfer of Points into your Velocity account from Velocity or a partner counts as a Long Term Activity, which sets the Points Expiry Date 24 months out, excluding family transfers and Family Pooling. [5]

The terms warn that a partner may change the way Points can be earned or redeemed, including the number of partner points required to transfer to Velocity, and that Velocity may not control those changes; Velocity may also change earn rates, eligibility requirements and its partner list. [5]

Exceptions and limits

  • Bookings made before 2 April 2025. Members who booked an eligible Virgin Australia flight before that date may earn 5 Points per $1 regardless of whether they hold an eligible card. [1]
  • Economy Lite. Lite fares earn Base Points but are excluded from Tier Bonus Points. [1] [4]
  • Family Pooling. Up to six members — a maximum of two adults aged 18 or over and four children living at the same address — can form one Family Pool, and the pool must be set up before Points or Status Credits are earned if they are to be pooled to the nominated beneficiary. [1] Points received as a pool beneficiary or through a family transfer may extend the Points Expiry Date by up to one month only. [1] [5]
  • Expiry. Points typically have a 24-month expiry date, and once Points have expired they cannot be reinstated. [1] [5]
  • Missing card Points. For a partner transaction that is not with an airline partner, members must contact the partner no later than 90 days from the date of the Points activity. [5]
  • Status Credits. From 1 October 2025, Status Credits earned through eligible Velocity Points earning credit cards, Family Pooling as a beneficiary or other partners do not count towards the minimum share of Status Credits that must be earned on Virgin Australia marketed or operated flights. [4]
  • Topping up. Buying Points through Points Booster counts as a Long Term Activity and extends the Points Expiry Date by 24 months, within an annual purchase limit of 250,000 Points. [1] [5]
