How to earn Velocity Points without flying
Velocity Frequent Flyer (Velocity) is the Australian loyalty programme operated by Velocity Frequent Flyer Pty Ltd, and earning Velocity Points without flying means collecting them through eligible transactions with programme partners instead of on flights. [5] Velocity groups partner earning into retail, lifestyle, travel and financial services, and sets earn rates and eligibility partner by partner rather than through one programme-wide rate. [5]
Facts checked: 18 October 2026
Key takeaways
- Ground earning is partner by partner: eligible transactions, earn rates and conditions differ between partners and offers, and can also vary with your membership Status. [5]
- You need to give your Velocity number, or show your Velocity card, at the time of the transaction, or you may not earn Points for it. [5]
- Buying Points is capped: Points Booster needs a balance of at least 1 Point, a minimum purchase of 1,000 Points and a maximum of 250,000 Points each year, and bought Points do not earn Points themselves. [5]
- Velocity will not credit Points for a booking on which you have already earned points or miles in another airline loyalty programme. [5]
- Every account has a Points Expiry Date, set at 24 months after the most recent Long Term Activity or one month after the most recent Short Term Activity, whichever is later. [5]
Which ground partners earn Velocity Points?
Velocity's membership terms name retail, lifestyle, travel and financial services as the partner categories open to members, and warn that the eligible transactions and the terms of earning differ between partners and offers and may depend on your Status. [5]
The Velocity Store is the programme's own online shopping service, where members browse hundreds of retailers and earn and redeem Points on eligible online purchases, subject to the Velocity Store terms and the retailer's own conditions. [5] Members may also pick up Points for specified actions taken in the Velocity App or on the Velocity website. [5]
Car rental is a separate partner category: Red members earn Points on eligible rentals, while Silver, Gold, Platinum and Platinum Plus members earn bonus Points on eligible rentals, with the base rate depending on the rental partner and the location of the rental. [1]
Velocity also lists select everyday partners, including Cruisepilot and Flexicar, where members holding Status earn bonus Points on eligible spend. [1] Virgin Australia Holidays works differently again: Points are calculated on the value of the holiday booked and the Status of the primary guest at the date the holiday travel is completed, and are awarded to the member named as primary guest. [5]
How do credit cards and partner transfers add Points?
Financial services is one of the partner categories in the membership terms [5], and Velocity says members can transfer rewards points into Velocity from eligible partners such as selected retailers, hotel partners and credit card partners. [1] [2]
Because each partner sets its own rate and eligibility rules, the membership terms tell members to check a partner's Points earn rate and terms before making an eligible Points earn transaction or engaging with an offer. [5]
On the card side, Velocity keeps a list of eligible Velocity Points earning credit cards and reserves the right to update it; as at 2 April 2025 that list named the American Express Velocity Gold, Escape, Escape Plus, Platinum and Business cards, the Bank of Queensland Signature Velocity and Specialist Platinum Velocity cards, the Westpac Altitude Mastercard Platinum and Black, and the Virgin Money Virgin Australia Velocity Flyer and High Flyer cards. [4] [1] Card strategy is covered in Velocity Points credit cards.
The membership terms also set out the routes for moving Points between accounts and programmes, with separate clauses for Family Pooling, Points transfers to Singapore Airlines and Points transfers to family members. [5]
Do Status bonuses and timed offers apply on the ground?
Platinum Plus, Platinum, Gold and Silver members earn bonus Points with selected partners. [1] With the everyday partners Velocity names — Cruisepilot and Flexicar — Silver, Gold, Platinum and Platinum Plus members earn bonus Points on eligible spend, while the base earn rate depends on the partner. [1]
Timed promotions sit on top of those rates. As of 18 October 2026, Velocity's earning page carried an everyday-partners offer of up to 1,500 bonus Velocity Points that had to be activated, with terms and conditions applying. [1] The membership terms add that bonus offers are usually available for a limited time, usually require eligibility conditions to be met, and are sometimes personalised or tailored to a group of members, so not every offer is made to every member. [5]
What keeps ground-earned Velocity Points alive?
Your Points Expiry Date is the later of 24 months, rounded to the end of the month, after your most recent Long Term Activity, or one month, rounded to the end of the month, after your most recent Short Term Activity; a Short Term Activity only moves the date if it produces a later one. [5]
Long Term Activities include earning or redeeming Points through your Velocity account, or transferring Points into it, with Velocity or one of its partners, excluding family transfers and Family Pooling, plus receiving Points transferred by a Virgin Australia Business Flyer member and buying Points with Points Booster. [5] Short Term Activities are narrower: earning Points in a Family Pool as a beneficiary, receiving Points transferred by a family member, and receiving Points transferred as an inheritance. [5]
Velocity's earning page puts it more simply: each time you earn, redeem or transfer Points you extend the expiry date by 24 months, while Points moved into a Family Pool, family member transfers and inherited Points may extend it by only up to one month, and expired Points cannot be reinstated. [1]
What are the caps and exclusions?
- Buying Points. Points Booster is open to members with a minimum Points balance of 1 Point; you can buy at least 1,000 Points at a time, as often as you like, up to a maximum of 250,000 Points each year; prices are in Australian dollars including GST; transactions are processed overseas, so your financial institution will generally charge a foreign exchange or overseas transaction fee. [5]
- Bought Points do not earn. Points bought through Points Booster do not themselves earn Points, must be redeemed for a Reward, and the amount paid is non-refundable except where the Australian Consumer Law entitles you to a refund. [5]
- One programme per booking. Velocity says it will not credit Points where you have already earned points or miles in another airline loyalty programme for the same booking. [5]
- Reversals. Points can be reversed for transactions that are cancelled, refunded, returned or not supplied, and Velocity can also reverse Points credited in error or after a breach of the membership terms. [5]
- No backdating for ground partners. Points with non-airline partners can only be earned from your join date, while flights can be claimed from up to 30 days before joining. [5]
- Family Pool limits. One Family Pool can hold up to 6 Velocity members — a maximum of 2 adults aged 18 or over and 4 children — living at the same address, and the pool must be set up before Points or Status Credits are earned for them to be pooled. [1]
- Shorter claim windows. Enquiries about non-airline partner Points go to the partner within 90 days of the activity, against 180 days for Virgin Australia and airline partner claims made through Velocity's missing Points tool. [5]
- Slower crediting. Points from other partners can take longer to appear than flights, including up to 8–10 weeks. [5]
Frequently asked questions
Do you need a Velocity credit card to earn Points on the ground?
No. Retail, lifestyle, travel and financial services partners, the Velocity Store and specified App or website actions are all listed as earning routes, and credit card partners are one category among them. [5] [1]
Can you buy Velocity Points?
Velocity says Points Booster and, at its discretion, Reward Seat Points Top-Up are the only ways to buy Points; Points Booster requires a balance of at least 1 Point, a minimum of 1,000 Points per purchase and a maximum of 250,000 Points a year. [5]
How long do you have to claim missing partner Points?
Non-airline partner enquiries must go to the partner within 90 days of the activity date, and Virgin Australia or airline partner claims through Velocity's missing Points tool within 180 days. [5]
Do shopping Points count towards expiry?
Earning, redeeming or transferring with Velocity or a partner is a Long Term Activity, which sets the expiry date 24 months out, while Family Pool credits and family member transfers are Short Term Activities that can extend it by only up to one month. [5] [1]
