How to use the Virgin Atlantic Companion Voucher
A Virgin Atlantic Companion Voucher is a Flying Club reward voucher that the member applies to a booking either as a companion reward or as an upgrade reward, choosing which at the time of redemption. [2] Gold members earn vouchers when they renew Gold and when they reach 2,000 Tier Points in a membership year, and cardholders can earn them through Virgin Atlantic's credit-card partners. [2]
Facts checked: 18 October 2026
Key takeaways
- Virgin Atlantic's Flying Club terms call the benefit a Flying Club reward voucher; the member decides at redemption whether it works as an upgrade reward or a companion reward. [2]
- Under the terms effective 30 October 2024, Gold members receive one voucher on each Gold renewal and two more on reaching 2,000 Tier Points in a membership year; both are valid for 24 months from the date they are issued. [2]
Earning a voucher
The instrument is a Flying Club reward voucher, earned through reaching certain Gold tier milestones or through Virgin Atlantic's credit-card partners, and a companion reward is one of two ways to spend it. [2]
Gold renewal. Gold members receive one complimentary Flying Club reward voucher on each annual renewal of Gold membership; it is issued at the end of the Gold membership year, when the tier renews, and is valid for 24 months from the date of issue. [2]
2,000 Tier Points. Gold members who reach 2,000 Tier Points or more during their membership renewal year earn an additional two complimentary vouchers, issued as soon as the 2,000 Tier Points are reached and valid for 24 months from issue. [2] Reaching Gold in the first place is a separate question, covered on the Flying Club status page.
Credit cards. Vouchers can also be earned through the Virgin Atlantic Credit Card and the Virgin Red Rewards Mastercard, which are governed by their own credit-card terms. [2]
Household accounts. Vouchers are not pooled: rewards earned by a linked member of a Household Account, including Flying Club reward vouchers, are not transferred to the Household Leader's account. [2]
Using it as a companion reward
At the time of redemption the member chooses whether the voucher is applied as an upgrade reward or as a companion reward. [2]
The earlier edition of the terms, which applied to bookings made from 30 November 2021 to 29 October 2024, described a complimentary Companion Reward issued at the end of the Gold membership year on Gold renewal, valid for 12 months from award. [3] It could be used in the same way as a Virgin Atlantic flight reward, except that the member did not need to redeem Virgin Points for it. [3] In that edition, upgrades and companion rewards could not be applied to bookings made in the Economy Light product, and the qualifying fare classes were published on Virgin Atlantic's website, where they could change and were to be checked at the time of booking. [3]
That edition also required upgrade, companion and chauffeur-driven car rewards to be booked by phoning the Virgin Atlantic Customer Centre. [3] For the award side of the trip more generally, see booking Virgin Atlantic Flying Club awards.
Reward seats do not include passenger taxes, fees, charges and carrier-imposed surcharges, which are payable for each passenger. [2] The earlier edition applied the same principle to reward flights, charging those amounts per passenger. [3]
Expiry, changes and booking
Expiry. Vouchers earned under the terms effective 30 October 2024 run for 24 months from the date they are issued. [2] Under the earlier edition the Companion Reward ran for 12 months from award, all bookings using it had to be made within 12 months of the Gold member's renewal date, and the outbound flight had to be flown on or before the voucher's expiry date, although the return could be taken later. [3]
Changes. Where a Gold member is travelling on a Companion Reward booking, the date-change fee is waived for the Gold member and for all passengers listed on the same booking reference. [2] That waiver does not apply to Points Plus Money bookings, normal revenue bookings, or bookings upgraded using Virgin Points, where normal fare rules apply. [2]
Earlier edition. Where a companion reward sat alongside a paying ticket and the passenger on the paying ticket changed flight or class, the companion reward could be amended for the same amendment fee, subject to seat availability. [3]
Exceptions and limits
- Availability. All Flying Club rewards, including a companion reward, are subject to availability. [2]
- Economy Light. In the edition that applied up to 29 October 2024, upgrades and companion rewards could not be applied to bookings made in the Economy Light product. [3]
- No sale or auction. Members are not permitted to sell or auction rewards, vouchers or Virgin Points in any circumstances, and doing so could lead to termination of membership. [2] Under the earlier edition a voucher became void if sold, auctioned or bartered. [3]
- Gifting (earlier edition). Only Silver or Gold members could gift vouchers, the recipient had to be a Flying Club member in any tier, and once gifted only the recipient could use the voucher, with all voucher rules and expiry dates applying to them. [3] Where a member held several vouchers, the one with the soonest expiry date was the one gifted. [3]
- Not covered here. The separate credit-card terms that govern card-earned vouchers are outside this page. [2]
