FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY

What is award night pricing?

Award night pricing is the number of loyalty-programme points a hotel rewards programme charges for one free night at a participating property, as distinct from the cash rate for the same room. The points price, not the cash price, decides what a redemption stay costs a member, and it is not uniform: in Marriott Bonvoy, free night awards are redeemable at thousands of properties worldwide with varying point values, and stays are advertised from 12,000 points a night as of 18 October 2026. [6]

Key takeaways

  • Award night pricing is the points cost of a free night at a hotel, set by the loyalty programme rather than by the room's cash rate. [6]
  • The price is not the same everywhere: Marriott Bonvoy free night awards are redeemable at thousands of properties with varying point values. [6]
  • Programmes keep the pricing structure flexible and may change redemption rates and redemption levels with or without notice. [2]
  • Length of stay can change the effective price: Hilton Honors makes every fifth night free on all-points Standard Room Reward Stays of five or more nights. [1]

How is the points price of a free night set?

Marriott Bonvoy describes free night awards as redeemable at thousands of properties worldwide, with point values that vary by property, and says the award is applied during booking. [6] Its redemption page advertised award stays from 12,000 points a night as of 18 October 2026. [6]

The pricing structure is deliberately flexible. Marriott Bonvoy's Program Rules say Marriott International may change earning and redemption structures, redemption rates and redemption levels, and award availability, with or without notice, even where those changes affect the value of points. [2]

Hilton Honors frames the same idea from the member's side: an all-points reward stay is charged at the full Standard Room Reward price for every night except the free ones, so the price is expressed as a per-night points rate for a standard room at that hotel. [1] Hilton Honors also sells award stays that mix the two currencies, and members can earn points on the money portion of a Points & Money Rewards™ stay. [1] An award night still counts as a night for status purposes: Hilton Honors counts Reward Stays toward overall Stays and nights for elite tier qualification, elite tier gifting and milestone bonuses. [1]

Do room type and taxes change what an award night costs?

Room type. Hilton Honors limits its fifth-night-free benefit to Standard Room Reward Stays, and a Standard Room is defined by each hotel and is subject to availability at participating hotels within the Hilton portfolio. [1] Marriott Bonvoy sells room upgrades for points as a separate transaction: members can trade points or cash for a better view or a larger suite at select hotels and resorts, applying the award during booking. [6] Its Nightly Upgrade Awards work differently and are available to Gold Elite members and above, requested after booking. [6]

Taxes and extra charges. What an award night covers is set property by property. Marriott Bonvoy's Program Rules describe Atlantis, Paradise Island, Bahamas, a non-branded participating property with limited participation, where members may redeem points for eligible stays at The Coral at Atlantis, The Royal at Atlantis and The Cove at Atlantis. [2] At those properties, award redemption stays include the standard room rate and room tax only; extra-person charges, resort fees, service charges and other property charges are the member's responsibility and are not included. [2] The Reef at Atlantis, The Beach at Atlantis and Harborside at Atlantis do not participate in the programme at all. [2]

How do multi-night stays and reduced award rates change the price?

Two levers change the points bill without changing the headline nightly rate: a free night on longer stays, and reduced-points award rates at participating hotels.

[1] The benefit is listed among the programme's elite tier benefits, from Silver Elite upward. [1]

Exceptions and limits

  • Forfeited free nights. A Hilton Honors fifth free night is forfeited if the member declines it, the reservation is cancelled, or check-out happens before the fifth night, and the benefit has no cash or point value. [1]
  • Packaged stays. The Hilton Honors fifth-night-free benefit does not apply when a stay is booked as part of a Reward Stay offer, package or promotion offered by Hilton or any of its partners. [1]
  • Cancellation after expiry. Marriott Bonvoy says an award redeemed before points are forfeited remains valid unless it is cancelled after the points expiration date. [2]
  • Property exits. If a Marriott Bonvoy participating property or brand leaves the programme, awards and offers are no longer valid after the exit date, even where the reservation was made before it. [2]
  • Booking channel. Points cannot be redeemed, and points or miles are not earned, for Atlantis reservations booked through AtlantisBahamas.com. [2]
  • No cash value. Marriott Bonvoy's Program Rules state that points, awards and other member benefits have no cash value. [2]
