FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY

What is a cruise loyalty qualifying night?

A cruise loyalty qualifying night is a night spent aboard a cruise ship that the line's loyalty programme counts toward tier status, normally by converting each night into points at a published rate. The rate is not the same on every line: Norwegian Cruise Line awards one Latitudes point per cruise night, while Celebrity Cruises awards between 2 and 24 Club Points per night depending on the stateroom booked. Key takeaways

  • A qualifying night is the basic unit of cruise loyalty earning: the member sails, the nights are logged, and the resulting points push the account toward its next tier. [1] [4]
  • The conversion rate belongs to one programme at a time. Latitudes Rewards pays 1 point per cruise night, Crown & Anchor Society pays 1 Cruise Point per completed night, and Captain’s Club pays a rate set by stateroom category. [1] [4] [5]
  • Suites and single travellers can lift the nightly rate, but the uplift and its conditions differ: Latitudes Rewards adds one point per night, Crown & Anchor Society doubles to two, and Captain’s Club pays more for higher stateroom categories. [1] [4] [5]

How do cruise lines count qualifying nights?

Cruise loyalty works on nights rather than trips. A member enrols, sails, and each night aboard is converted into the programme's own cruise loyalty currency; those points then accumulate against tier thresholds. Because a seven-night voyage produces many more units than a two-night one, the night is what separates a short break from a long itinerary in status terms.

Norwegian Cruise Line enrols guests in Latitudes Rewards automatically after their first cruise and awards 1 point for every cruise night. [1] A further point per night is added for booking a full-fare suite or The Haven, and another point per night when booking a Latitudes Rewards Insider Offer. [1]

Royal Caribbean International’s Crown & Anchor Society awards one Cruise Point for each completed night of sailing, and two per night when the member purchases and sails in one of its listed suite categories, or sails in any category on a single pricing type for double-occupancy staterooms. [4]

Celebrity Cruises uses the same night-based logic but different arithmetic: Captain’s Club points are based on stateroom category and the number of nights sailed, so the per-night value changes with the room rather than with a flat bonus. [5]

Credit earned per night by programme
Programme (line)Base credit per nightExtra credit per night
Latitudes Rewards (Norwegian Cruise Line)1 point per cruise night [1]+1 for a full-fare suite or The Haven; +1 on a Latitudes Rewards Insider Offer [1]
Crown & Anchor Society (Royal Caribbean International)1 Cruise Point per completed night of sailing [4]+1, for two in total, for listed suite categories or single pricing on a double-occupancy stateroom [4]
Captain’s Club (Celebrity Cruises)2 to 24 Club Points per night, by stateroom category [5]Double points for solo travellers paying full fare; 1 extra night of points for reduced housekeeping [5]

How does stateroom category change the points a night earns?

At Celebrity Cruises the per-night rate is published as a table, and the difference between the cheapest and most expensive room is large: an inside or ocean-view night earns 2 Club Points, while a night in an Iconic Suite earns 24. [5]

Galapagos and river cruises carry their own per-night tables rather than the ocean-cruise rates: on Galapagos sailings the range runs from 8 Club Points per night in a Sky Suite with Veranda to 18 in a Royal Suite or Penthouse, and on river cruises from 8 in a River View or Infinite Balcony to 18 in a Skylight Infinite Balcony or Vista Balcony Suite. [5]

The flat-bonus programmes attach conditions to the uplift instead. At Norwegian Cruise Line the suite bonus applies to full-fare suites booked when the reservation was originally made and excludes Club Balcony Suites, while the Insider Offer bonus excludes Suites and The Haven. [1] At Royal Caribbean the second nightly point applies to suite categories RL, RS, PS, SL, TS, A1, A2, A3, CL, OS, FS, GS and JS. [4] Captain’s Club also doubles points for a solo traveller who books a stateroom and pays the full fare, and adds one extra night of points to members who opt into reduced housekeeping. [5]

How do qualifying nights become tier status?

Nights turn into status when the points they generate reach a published threshold. The thresholds are programme-specific and are expressed in each programme's own points, so the number of nights needed for a given tier depends both on the line and on the room booked. [1] [4] [5]

Tier thresholds by programme
ProgrammeTier thresholds
Latitudes RewardsBronze 1, Silver 20, Gold 45, Platinum 75, Sapphire 150, Diamond 350, Ambassador 700 points [1]
Crown & Anchor SocietyTiers begin at 3 Cruise Points, with further steps at 30, 55, 80, 175 and 700 [4]
Captain’s ClubClassic 2–149, Select 150–299, Elite 300–749, Elite Plus 750–2,999, Zenith 3,000+ Club Points [5]

Timing matters as well as rate. Crown & Anchor Cruise Points are added to the account within 30 days after the cruise, and a member who reaches a new tier while onboard receives the new benefits from the next sailing rather than during the current one. [4] Captain’s Club points are posted to the account after the sailing. [5]

Night credit is also the raw material for the wider earning picture: it interacts with the onboard spend, partner activity and promotional offers covered in cruise loyalty earning metrics compared, and with the individual line profiles in the cruise loyalty programmes guide.

Exceptions and limits

  • Each rule belongs to one programme. The rates above describe Latitudes Rewards, Crown & Anchor Society and Captain’s Club only; no rule quoted here carries across to another line. [1] [4] [5]
  • Missing credit has a window. Norwegian Cruise Line credits missing Latitudes points only for cruises taken within the last 12 months. [1]
  • Sail length can gate the reward. Latitudes Rewards tier benefits are available on sailings of 5 nights or longer, while onboard discounts apply on all sailings regardless of sail length. [1]
  • Some itineraries earn at their own rate. Galapagos and river cruises earn Captain’s Club points on separate tables, and Celebrity states that benefits may vary on those itineraries, so eligibility is confirmed in the programme terms. [5]
  • Night credit can move between Royal Caribbean Group brands. Crown & Anchor members aged 18 and over can apply points earned on a sailing to Captain’s Club or Silversea’s Venetian Society through Points Choice, using exchange rates published annually, for sailings departing on or after 30 January 2026, with requests accepted up to 14 days after disembarkation. [4]
  • Solo treatment is not uniform. Crown & Anchor treats a single pricing type on a double-occupancy stateroom as a second nightly point, while Captain’s Club doubles points for a solo traveller who pays the full fare. [4] [5]

Frequently asked questions

Do cruise loyalty points from nights at sea expire?

Royal Caribbean states that Crown & Anchor points never expire. [4] Celebrity says that once Captain’s Club points are in an account they do not expire. [5]

When are points for a completed cruise posted?

Crown & Anchor Cruise Points are added within 30 days after the cruise. [4] Captain’s Club points are posted after the sailing. [5]

Does a suite earn more points per night?

Yes, on all three programmes, but the mechanism differs: Latitudes Rewards adds one point per night for a full-fare suite or The Haven, Crown & Anchor awards two points per night for listed suite categories, and Captain’s Club simply pays a higher per-night rate for higher stateroom categories. [1] [4] [5]

How far back can missing cruise nights be credited?

For Latitudes Rewards, missing points can only be credited for cruises taken within the last 12 months. [1]

Do Galapagos and river cruises earn Captain’s Club points?

They do, at their own published per-night rates, and Celebrity advises confirming the specific sailing’s eligibility in the programme terms because benefits may vary on those itineraries. [5]
