FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY

What is a frequent flyer number?

A frequent flyer number is the unique membership number that an airline loyalty programme assigns to a member and uses to connect flights, partner transactions and other eligible activity to that member's account. [4] A programme matches the number, and the name attached to it, to a booking, so a missing number, a number that belongs to someone else, or a name mismatch can leave a flight uncredited. [3] [4]

Key takeaways

  • A frequent flyer number is a unique membership number tied to one loyalty account; Velocity Frequent Flyer issues a Velocity number when it accepts a membership application. [4]
  • The number must be in the booking before departure and must belong to the passenger travelling; Velocity does not award Points or Status Credits where the membership number entered is not the passenger's own number. [3] [4]
  • Names matter as well as numbers: Velocity says the name and Velocity number in the itinerary should exactly match the Velocity account details, or Points may be missed. [4]
  • A member who forgets to add the number before travelling can submit a missing Points claim, but Virgin Australia and airline partner claims, excluding Link Airways, must be made within 180 days of the Points activity. [3] [4]

What is a frequent flyer number?

For Velocity Frequent Flyer, the frequent flyer number is the unique membership number, called a Velocity number, that Velocity assigns when it accepts a membership application. [4]

The programme-specific rules below apply to Velocity Frequent Flyer, the programme of Virgin Australia, under terms effective 2 October 2026. [4] This page covers Velocity Frequent Flyer only; other airline programmes are not covered.

A member uses that Velocity number, together with a password, to log in to their Velocity account. [4] A Velocity Card may show the member's name, Velocity number, Review Date, Card Expiry date or Validity Period, and the card may be digital or physical depending on status and preference. [4] Copies or screenshots of a Velocity Card are not accepted as proof of membership. [4]

Where does the frequent flyer number go on a booking?

For Velocity, the membership number has to be added to the booking so that Points can be credited automatically. [4] The member must make sure the correct loyalty programme number is included before departure, even if someone else, such as a travel agent, made the booking. [4] See airline and OTA booking status credit.

The details in the itinerary must match the account details exactly: Velocity says the name and Velocity number recorded in the itinerary should match the Velocity account, or the member may miss out on earning Points. [4] The number must also be the number of the passenger travelling; Velocity Points and Status Credits cannot be earned on a flight where the membership number entered is not the passenger's membership number. [3]

A member of another airline loyalty programme can earn points or miles and use benefits with only one programme per booking. [4] Velocity and its partners may also ask a member to produce the Velocity Card or quote the Velocity number when earning or redeeming Points, earning Status Credits or receiving benefits. [4] A member may not earn Points if the Velocity number is not provided, or the Velocity Card is not shown, at the time of an eligible transaction or when asked. [4]

Why has my flight not credited to my frequent flyer number?

Velocity's published rules identify several reasons a booking may not credit: the number was not provided, the number entered belongs to someone else, the name on the itinerary does not match the account, or another loyalty programme was used for the booking. [3] [4] Velocity credits Points only to the account of the member who makes the eligible transaction, and it does not award Points for other people flying with the member, even if the member paid for their tickets, unless an eligible Family Pool applies. [4]

Timing can also explain a missing credit. Velocity aims to allocate Points from eligible Virgin Australia marketed and operated flights within two to three days of completed travel, though timing may vary, while Points earned with other partners can take up to eight to ten weeks to appear. [4] Its Virgin Australia earn page says Points can take up to 14 days after a flight to be added, and that a member who has not been credited after 14 days, or who forgot to add the Velocity membership number before travelling, can submit a missing Points claim through the Velocity account. [3]

There are deadlines. For Virgin Australia and airline partner transactions, excluding Link Airways, the missing Points claim tool must be used no later than 180 days from the date of the Points activity. [4] For non-airline partner transactions, the member must contact the partner no later than 90 days from the date of the activity, and for Link Airways transactions the deadline is six months. [4] Velocity also says that once a member has flown, it cannot make changes to the programme number on the booking. [4] The separate missing-points process covers the case where the number was omitted before travel. [3] See missing miles claim and retroactive credit window.

Exceptions and limits

  • If a member earned or used benefits with Velocity, Velocity says it will not reverse Points, Status Credits or benefits already received, even if the wrong programme number was used. [4]
  • If a member earned or used benefits with another programme, Velocity will not process a retrospective Velocity earn claim for that booking, regardless of whether the other programme reverses its points or miles. [4]
  • Membership is not transferable, and members must keep their Velocity number and password secure and confidential. [4] A member who realises that a Velocity Card or Velocity number has been lost, stolen, misused or accidentally revealed should contact Velocity as soon as possible; until then, the member may be liable for unauthorised use. [4]
  • Claim windows differ: 180 days for Virgin Australia and airline partner transactions (excluding Link Airways), 90 days for non-airline partner transactions, and six months for Link Airways transactions. [4]

Frequently asked questions

Where do I enter my Velocity number?

Add it to the booking before departure so that Points can be credited automatically, and check that the name and number match the Velocity account exactly. [4] If a travel agent made the booking, confirm that the correct programme number is in the reservation yourself. [4]

Why did my flight not earn Velocity Points?

Velocity says Points and Status Credits cannot be earned where the membership number entered is not the passenger's own number. [3] A name mismatch can also cause Points to be missed. [4]

Can I claim Points if I forgot to add my number?

Yes. Velocity says a member who forgot to add the Velocity membership number before travelling can submit a missing Points claim through the Velocity account. [3] Virgin Australia and airline partner claims, excluding Link Airways, must be made within 180 days of the Points activity. [4]

How long does Velocity Points credit take?

Velocity aims to credit eligible Virgin Australia marketed and operated flights within two to three days, although timing may vary, and other partner Points can take up to eight to ten weeks. [4] Its Virgin Australia page says to allow up to 14 days before submitting a missing Points claim. [3]
