FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY

What is a hotel day-use room?

A hotel day-use room is a guest room sold for use within a single day, with check-in and check-out on the same date and no overnight stay, usually at its own price and with its own hours. Availability is a property decision, and the loyalty treatment of such a booking follows a programme's stay and night definitions rather than the hours spent in the room: Marriott Bonvoy, for example, awards Elite Night Credit only for a night during a Qualifying Stay. Key takeaways

  • A day-use room is booked for same-day use with no overnight night, so it sits apart from an ordinary overnight rate, with its own price and hours.
  • Marriott Bonvoy awards Elite Night Credit only on a night during a Qualifying Stay, which puts overnight nights, not daytime hours, at the centre of status earning. [3]
  • Spend at certain hotel outlets, without any room stay, can earn base Points in Bonvoy. [3]

How does a hotel day-use room work?

A day-use product is built around a window rather than a night. A property may sell a room from morning into the afternoon, or for a shorter block of hours, and it sets the price and the time limits separately from its overnight rates. Because the same room has to be cleaned and returned to inventory for the evening, day-use rooms typically depend on how full the hotel is and on its housekeeping schedule, and many hotels do not offer the product at all.

Inside a loyalty programme, what such a booking earns depends on how that programme defines a stay, a night and a qualifying charge. Marriott Bonvoy's Program Rules, updated October 2026, describe earning around stays in a guest room: Qualifying Charges are the charges a member incurs as the registered guest on their folio during a stay in a guest room at a Participating Property, plus up to two additional guest rooms with the same check-in and check-out dates. [3] The member must give their membership number at the time of reservation or at check-in, stay in one of the reserved rooms as a registered guest, and pay the charges. [3] Room charges count where they are on a Qualifying Rate for a Stay. [3]

Nights are counted separately from spend. An Elite Night Credit, the credit used toward Elite Status and Lifetime Elite Status, is earned only on a night during a Qualifying Stay. [3]

Do day-use stays count as Marriott Bonvoy nights and points?

For status, the earning unit in Bonvoy is the overnight night inside a Qualifying Stay. [3] Daytime use of a room does not create such a night, so on the terms of those rules a day-use booking does not itself generate an Elite Night Credit, however long the guest uses the room. [3]

Points on room spend follow the Qualifying Charges definition, which requires a stay in a guest room by the member as the registered guest and payment of the charges by that member. [3] The rate attached to the booking also matters: only Qualifying Rates for Stays appear among the eligible room charges. [3]

Property participation is not uniform. Marriott states that at properties taking part in the programme in a limited or unique capacity, specific benefits, amenities, offers, awards and services may not be available, even where the property is not explicitly identified as excluded. [3] Marriott may also correct, adjust, cancel or reconcile Points, Qualifying Nights, status, benefits or transactions at any time in its sole discretion, including where a benefit was issued in error or the member was not eligible. [3]

Where a charge or stay is not credited, a missing-credit request must reach Marriott within one year of the applicable activity and remains subject to posting timelines, documentation requirements and property-specific procedures. [3]

Can you earn Bonvoy points at a hotel without staying overnight?

Bonvoy also rewards spend that is not tied to a guest room. At certain Participating Properties listed by Marriott, members earn base Points on qualifying spend at a Participating Outlet. [3] The member either gives their membership number at the time of payment or has a payment card linked to the account; in some markets, where a card is linked to several accounts, only the most recently linked account earns. [3]

Not all outlet spend qualifies. Exclusions include alcoholic beverages where prohibited by law, charges connected with a banquet, meeting or other function excluded from Qualifying Charges, charges from outlets managed or operated by a third party, which may not be eligible, and charges at outlets that are not located within the property. [3] Points from outlet transactions may take up to ten days after each transaction to post, and the list of Participating Outlets and Participating Properties may change at any time, with or without notice. [3]

Exceptions and limits

  • Rules can change. Marriott may change, limit, amend or cancel the Program Rules, earning and redemption structures and qualifying requirements with or without notice, even where a change affects the value of Points or the ability to obtain certain awards or benefits. [3]
  • Points need activity. Members must have Qualifying Activity at least once every 24 months to retain accumulated Points, Awards and other benefits; Qualifying Activity includes earning or redeeming Points or Miles, purchasing Points, completing a Qualifying Stay, or converting Points or Miles with designated partners, while gifting, transferring or receiving Points from another member does not count. [3] After 24 consecutive months without Qualifying Activity, all accumulated Points, Awards and other benefits are forfeited and cannot be reinstated, and an account inactive for five consecutive years may be deactivated. [3]
  • Some points do not expire. Points in Lifetime Elite Status accounts are not currently subject to expiration, although Marriott says it may apply an expiration policy to those accounts in the future. [3]
  • Properties can leave. Where a property exits the programme, members no longer earn Points or Qualifying Nights for stays there, and awards and other offers are no longer valid after the exit date, even for reservations made before that date. [3]

Frequently asked questions

Is a day-use room the same as an early check-in?

No. A day-use booking is a separate product with its own price and hours, whereas early check-in concerns access to a room that is booked for the night.

Does a day-use stay count toward Marriott Bonvoy Elite Status?

Bonvoy earns Elite Night Credits only on a night during a Qualifying Stay, so a same-day booking without an overnight night does not produce one under those rules. [3]

How long do I have to claim missing credit for a Bonvoy stay?

Requests for missing credit must be received within one year of the applicable activity, subject to posting timelines, documentation requirements and property-specific procedures. [3]

Can a day-use booking keep my Bonvoy points from expiring?

Points are retained through Qualifying Activity at least once every 24 months; completing a Qualifying Stay is one example, while gifting, transferring or receiving points is not. [3]
