FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY
What is a hotel wifi fee?
A hotel wifi fee is the charge a property makes for internet access — in the guest room, in public areas, or both — appearing either as its own line on the bill or inside a bundled facilities charge. Whether a guest actually pays it depends less on the word "wifi" than on the rate that was booked, the property itself and any loyalty membership attached to the stay. Membership can be the thing that includes access: Marriott Bonvoy presents free in-room Wi-Fi as a reason to join its programme, listing it with its rates and mobile check-in. [2]

Key takeaways
- A wifi fee is a property-level charge for internet access. It can sit on the bill as its own item, be collected per night or per stay, or be wrapped into a mandatory facilities charge that applies whether or not the guest goes online.
- The inclusions attached to the rate you booked, the room category, the individual hotel and any loyalty membership are what settle the question for a given stay, so the same brand name can produce different answers at two addresses.
- Marriott Bonvoy presents free in-room Wi-Fi as a benefit of joining [2], but its programme rules warn that specific benefits and amenities may not be available at properties that participate in a limited or unique capacity [2], and some brands and properties are listed as not participating at all [2].
What decides whether you pay for hotel wifi?
Hotel internet access usually arrives in one of three shapes. It can be included in the room rate, so the price quoted at booking already covers it. It can be charged separately, per night or per stay, and added to the folio at check-out. Or it can be folded into a mandatory property charge — a resort, facility or destination fee — that falls due whether or not the guest uses the connection. The wording on the bill is not a dependable guide to which of the three is in play; the conditions attached to the rate are.
| Place to look | What it settles |
|---|---|
| Rate conditions shown at booking | Whether internet is named as an inclusion of that specific rate, and what the rate excludes |
| The hotel's own information for the stay | The amenities the property says it provides and any conditions placed on access |
| The loyalty programme's benefit terms | Whether membership carries internet access, and what limits attach to the benefit |
| The folio at check-out | What was charged, under which description, and for which nights |
A separate charge is not the same thing as a fee for something you chose. Where a property bundles internet into a compulsory charge, the cost is carried by every guest on that rate, including guests who never open a browser. Reading the rate conditions before arrival, and reconciling the folio at departure, is how the two are kept apart — see the hotel pre-booking fee checklist and the hotel folio and billing checklist.
Do brand, room type and booking channel change the answer?
Brand is one input among several, and rarely the deciding one on its own. A prepaid rate and a flexible rate at the same address are separate products with separate conditions, so the inclusions attached to each can differ; what is included follows the rate that was booked. Room type enters the question when inclusions are attached to a particular category of room rather than to the hotel as a whole. Booking channel matters to the extent that it determines which rate conditions apply, since a room taken through a programme, a negotiated agreement or a property's own offer each carries its own terms. Loyalty membership sits alongside these, because internet access may be described as a membership benefit rather than as part of the room rate.
The property itself is a party in its own right. Marriott's Program Rules name the Company alongside its franchisees, licensees and each Participating Property [2], so the conditions attached to a stay come from the hotel as well as from the programme.
Does Marriott Bonvoy include free in-room wifi?
Marriott Bonvoy presents free in-room Wi-Fi as a benefit of joining, listed together with its rates and mobile check-in [2]. That is a programme-level statement, and the same terms attach limits to benefits of that kind.
Properties that take part in a limited or unique capacity are governed by separate supplemental terms, and specific benefits, amenities, offers, awards and services may not be available there even where the property is not explicitly flagged as excluded in the description of the benefit [2]. Separately, some brands and properties do not participate in Marriott Bonvoy at all unless expressly stated — among them Bulgari Hotels and Resorts at all locations, The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore and City Express Rio de Janeiro Barra da Tijuca [2]. At a hotel in either group, the membership benefit described by the programme may simply not be available, and the property's own information for the stay becomes the reference point.
Benefit descriptions are also not fixed. The programme reserves the right to change, limit, modify or suspend benefits with or without notice, even where a change affects the value members receive or their ability to obtain a particular award or benefit [2]. A membership promise about internet access should therefore be read as current at the time of the stay rather than permanent.
Exceptions and limits
- Limited and non-participating properties. Supplemental terms control at properties with limited or unique participation, and benefits may be unavailable there [2]; the non-participating list includes Bulgari Hotels and Resorts at all locations, The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore, Grand Residences by Marriott, Mayfair-London, Marriott Conference Centers, Rotary House Hotel, Houston, Marriott Vacation Club at The Empire Place, Bangkok, and The Marriott Ranch Bed and Breakfast [2].
- Charges outside a redeemed room. At Atlantis, Paradise Island, an Award Redemption Stay covers the standard room rate and room tax only; extra-person charges, resort fees, service charges and other property charges are the member's responsibility and are not included [2]. A property charge of that kind therefore sits outside the redemption, whatever the room rate contains.
- Unredeemed property charges generally. Taxes, service charges and gratuities that form part of a qualifying room package count as qualifying charges at all-inclusive properties [2], which shows that the treatment of a bundled charge follows the rate structure rather than the name printed on the folio.
- Changes to the benefit. The programme may change benefits and the rules that describe them with or without notice [2].
- Not a programme-wide rate. No single internet price applies across a hotel group: the answer is assembled from the rate, the room, the property and the membership, and any one of them can change the outcome.
Frequently asked questions
Is hotel wifi normally included in the room rate?
It depends on the rate rather than on the hotel category. Some rates name internet access as an inclusion and others do not, so the conditions shown for the specific rate at booking are the ones that answer the question.
Does Marriott Bonvoy membership get you free in-room wifi?
Marriott Bonvoy lists free in-room Wi-Fi among the benefits of joining the programme [2]. The benefit may not be available at properties that participate in a limited or unique capacity, or at brands and properties listed as not participating [2].
Does an award stay cover the hotel's internet charge?
At Atlantis, Paradise Island, an Award Redemption Stay covers only the standard room rate and room tax, with resort fees, service charges and other property charges left to the member [2]. Where access is bundled into a charge of that sort, it is not part of the redemption.
Where do I check what was actually charged for internet?
On the folio at check-out, which itemises what was billed and under which description. Compare it against the rate conditions that applied to the stay, and see hotel payment methods for how such charges are settled.
