FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY
What is loyalty account merging?
Loyalty account merging is the consolidation of two or more rewards records that one person holds in the same airline or hotel programme into a single membership, so that miles or points, elite status and pending activity sit in one account. It matters because a member who has enrolled twice can otherwise lose track of balances, tier progress and awards. Programmes do not all respond the same way: United Airlines' MileagePlus rules make each individual limited to one account, subject duplicate accounts to cancellation, and say balances in two or more accounts generally may not be combined. Key takeaways
- MileagePlus allows each individual one account only, and says duplicate accounts are subject to cancellation. [6]
- Mileage, benefits, certificates, PlusPoints, Premier Qualifying Credits, Premier (and/or Million Miler) status and awards earned in two or more accounts generally may not be combined. [6]
- Miles can reach another MileagePlus account through the Transfer Miles Program, or at United's discretion after a member's death or divorce. [6]
- Keeping several accounts while United suspects Prohibited Conduct exposes each account to termination, loss of accrued mileage and cancelled pending awards. [6]
How does merging a duplicate loyalty account usually work?
A duplicate loyalty account is a second membership record for the same person inside one programme. It appears for mundane reasons: a surname changed by marriage or divorce, a spelling mistake at enrolment, a new email address, a second sign-up to reach a promotion, or a travel booker who created a record rather than using the member's own. The member usually discovers the problem when points stop landing where expected or when an award booking is refused.
A programme that permits consolidation normally treats the request as an administrative correction, not as a transfer between two different customers. The member shows that both records belong to the same person, one record is chosen to survive, and everything held on the other record is handled under the programme's own terms. What can be affected includes the mileage or points balance, elite status and its expiry date, lifetime counters, upgrade instruments, pending retro-credit claims, ticketed award bookings and promotional vouchers.
Merging is worth separating from two neighbouring ideas. Linking accounts, such as a household or family pool, keeps separate memberships alive and shares their value. Transferring miles moves value to a different person and is commonly restricted. Merging, by contrast, is about one person holding one record.
When does United MileagePlus merge duplicate accounts?
MileagePlus frames the issue as a one-account rule rather than a merge service. Only individuals are eligible for membership, and each individual may maintain only one account in the programme; duplicate accounts are subject to cancellation. [6] Balances are not pooled: generally, mileage, benefits, certificates, PlusPoints, Premier Qualifying Credits, Premier (and/or Million Miler) status and awards earned or granted in two or more different accounts may not be combined. [6]
Not every member is an individual. MileagePlus may in certain circumstances permit members who are not individuals to participate, subject to Rule 39 and other limitations it sets at its sole discretion. [6] Each business may maintain only one account, and miles may not be accrued in both a business account and an individual member's account for the same qualifying activity, except as expressly allowed under the applicable MileagePlus partner's offer. [6]
Where a member maintains multiple accounts and United suspects or finds Prohibited Conduct, United reserves the right to exercise its remedies against each account. [6] Prohibited Conduct includes abuse of the programme, fraudulent activity, and misrepresentation of information furnished to United or its affiliates. [6]
What evidence and access rules apply?
For a member's death or divorce, United may credit all or part of that member's accrued mileage to authorized persons on receipt of documentation satisfactory to United and payment of applicable fees, at United's sole discretion. [6]
For activity that was never credited, United may require proof, including copies of tickets, receipts or similar documentation, and a member's claim and proof must reach United within 12 months of the date the mileage or Premier Qualifying Credits were claimed to have been earned; some partners set different retro-credit periods. [6] Members must also tell United promptly about an error in the account, such as an erroneous mileage, certificate, PlusPoints or other credit balance, and using a benefit credited in error is a violation of the rules. [6]
Account access is personal. Only the member named on the account is entitled to account information, credentials must not be shared or distributed, and no member may delegate or grant access to a third party by power of attorney, contract or otherwise. [6]
What happens to miles, status and pending awards?
Because balances in two or more accounts generally may not be combined, value sitting in a duplicate record should not be assumed to follow the member into the surviving one. [6] Mileage stays in an account until it is redeemed or otherwise forfeited, and member-requested account closure is one of the listed grounds for forfeiture. [6]
If United suspects or finds Prohibited Conduct, its remedies include terminating the membership, including Premier or Million Miler status; removing or cancelling accrued mileage, Premier Qualifying Credits, lifetime miles and pending or outstanding award redemptions, certificates or benefits; confiscating award tickets, denying boarding to award ticket holders or completing travel only on payment of an applicable revenue fare; and withdrawing other programme benefits. [6] Terminated members cannot take part in any aspect of the programme and cannot enrol with new accounts unless United gives express consent. [6]
During an audit or investigation United may delay or suspend all activity in an account. While suspended, the member may continue to accrue miles and Premier Qualifying Credits, but no redemptions or other transactions are permitted, and outstanding award redemptions, certificates and benefits are subject to cancellation or suspension. [6] Redemption activity may also be barred or suspended for a period after an account is opened. [6]
What are the exceptions and limits?
- Transfer Miles Program. Accrued mileage may be transferred to another MileagePlus account through United's Transfer Miles Program, and members must comply with that programme's terms and conditions. [6]
- Death or divorce. United may, in its sole discretion, credit all or a portion of a member's accrued mileage to authorized persons on satisfactory documentation and payment of applicable fees. [6]
- No general transfer. Mileage, benefits, certificates, PlusPoints, Premier Qualifying Credits, account numbers, Premier (and/or Million Miler) status and awards cannot be transferred or assigned except as United expressly permits in writing or under programmes it authorises or sponsors. [6]
- Business members. None of a business member's accrued mileage, certificates, benefits or awards are transferable as part of a transfer of, or assignment by, the business. [6]
- Who decides. United has the sole right to interpret and apply the Rules and may change them, including benefits and qualification criteria, at any time with or without notice. [6]

Accrued mileage may be transferred to another MileagePlus account through United's Transfer Miles Program, subject to that programme's terms and conditions.
