FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY

What is a resort credit?

A resort credit is a spending allowance bundled into a hotel rate or package that is applied against designated charges on the guest's bill during the stay, rather than deducted from the room rate. It is worth only what the individual offer sets out, and Hilton sells such a credit as part of a package rather than as a standing benefit of every booking. [3]

Key takeaways

  • A resort credit is attached to a particular rate or package; Hilton lists its on-property credit as part of the Experience the Stay package rather than as a standalone member benefit. [3]
  • Experience the Stay pairs the on-property credit with extra perks, named on Hilton's offer page as premium WiFi and early check-in. [3]
  • Resort fees are a separate charge from a resort credit; Marriott's terms for Atlantis, Paradise Island state that resort fees, service charges and other property charges are the member's responsibility on award redemption stays and are not included. [4]

How does a resort credit work?

A resort credit is a soft benefit. It does not change the room rate, and it does not arrive as cash or as points. It is a value the property agrees to offset against spending during the stay, and it is normally settled on the folio at check-out, when the allowance is applied to the balance of charges that the offer treats as eligible.

Because the credit travels with an offer, that offer settles the practical questions: which charges it may be used against, whether it applies once per stay or per night, whether a minimum stay or a particular booking channel is required, and what happens to any unused value. Spending that falls outside the listed charges is simply paid as normal, at the price the property charges.

Unused credit generally lapses when the stay ends. It is not a stored balance, it cannot usually be withdrawn, and it does not normally follow the guest to a later booking. Treating a credit as a discount on the room rate is the usual mistake: an allowance that is never spent reduces the bill by nothing.

What does the Hilton Experience the Stay credit include?

Hilton Honors publishes an offer page for its portfolio brands, and Experience the Stay appears there as a package that includes an on-property credit and additional perks, named as premium WiFi and early check-in. [3] The page groups the offer under a Hotel credit heading, separate from its discount, points-earning, family, parking and length-of-stay categories. [3]

The credit belongs to the package that carries it, so the package description rather than the room type alone decides what a guest receives. [3] Other Hilton packages on the same page set their own conditions: Stay Longer & Save offers 10% off at participating hotels across the United States with a length of stay of three nights, and Stay Longer in Paradise offers up to 20% off at select hotels across the Caribbean, Latin America, Hawaii and French Polynesia, also with a length of stay of three nights. [3]

Is a resort credit the same as a resort fee?

No. A resort fee is a charge the property adds to the bill; a resort credit is an allowance that may offset some of the bill. They are separate lines, and one does not automatically cancel the other. Marriott Bonvoy makes the split explicit for award redemption stays at Atlantis, Paradise Island, a non-branded participating property: the award covers the standard room rate and room tax only, while extra-person charges, resort fees, service charges and other property charges are the member's responsibility and are not included. [4] That treatment applies to award redemption stays at that property, where benefits are provided in limited form and the breakfast option of the Elite Welcome Gift is unavailable. [4]

How is the credit handled at check-out?

A folio credit can only offset items that have been posted to the room bill, so the eligible-charge list is the part of the offer worth reading first. Marriott Bonvoy's programme rules show the kinds of items a room bill can carry at participating properties: the qualifying room rate, food and beverages, direct-dial in-room telephone and fax, in-room movies and video games, and, at all-inclusive properties, spa, golf and other resort-run activities where the property manages them, along with taxes, service charges and gratuities that form part of a qualifying room package rate. [4] Charges from outlets run by third parties may not qualify, and charges at outlets outside the property do not. [4]

The credit should appear as its own entry on the bill, with the charges it offsets identifiable beside it. Anything outside the offer's list is then paid separately instead of being assumed to be covered, which is where a check-out review of the folio earns its keep.

Exceptions and limits

  • Property participation. Credits of this kind are property-level offers, and Hilton marks several offers on its page as available only at participating hotels, including the Military Family Rate, Stay Longer & Save in the United States and the GetYourGuide activity discount. [3]
  • Package perks stay with the package. Premium WiFi and early check-in are described as part of Experience the Stay, not as general Hilton Honors benefits available on every stay. [3]
  • Resort fees are not netted off automatically. At Atlantis, Paradise Island, Marriott Bonvoy excludes resort fees, service charges and other property charges from award redemption stays and leaves them to the member. [4]
  • One programme's rule is not another's. The Atlantis terms describe a single property's limited participation in Marriott Bonvoy and its award stays, and they do not set the rules for credits sold with paid rates elsewhere. [4]
  • Unused value. A credit is a bill allowance, so value not spent before check-out is normally lost; it is not a points balance and does not carry forward.

Frequently asked questions

Does a resort credit pay the resort fee?

Not automatically. A credit is an allowance under a specific offer, while a resort fee is a separate property charge. Marriott states that resort fees, service charges and other property charges sit outside its award redemption stays at Atlantis, Paradise Island and are the member's responsibility. [4]

Are a resort credit and a hotel credit different things?

They are different labels for the same mechanism: an allowance spent on property during the stay. Hilton files Experience the Stay under a Hotel credit heading on its offers page. [3]

Can unused credit be taken as cash?

No. It is a credit against the bill, applied before payment, and value left unspent at check-out is normally lost rather than refunded.

Does every Hilton stay include an on-property credit?

No. The credit forms part of the Experience the Stay package, one offer among those on Hilton's Special Offers page, and several Hilton offers are limited to participating hotels. [3]
