FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY
What is a retention offer?
Retention offer (also called a save offer) is an account-specific incentive that a credit card issuer may offer a cardholder who signals they intend to close an account — commonly a statement credit, bonus points or a fee waiver — and it is discretionary rather than a published card benefit. Because each offer is decided account by account, the public card terms cover only what happens when a card is actually closed; in American Express Membership Rewards, cancelling or unenrolling your last linked product means you immediately lose all the points in that Rewards Account. [5]

Key takeaways
- A retention offer is negotiated for a single account and is never guaranteed; issuers publish no thresholds, values or frequency for them.
- The documented part of the process is the closure itself: American Express Membership Rewards members who cancel or unenroll their last linked product immediately lose all the points in that Rewards Account. [5]
- Points moved to an airline or hotel partner cannot be reversed or converted back, so the transfer is one-way. [5] [6]
How does a retention offer work?
A retention offer sits outside the published schedule of card benefits. It is raised when a cardholder tells the issuer that they are considering closing the account, and the issuer decides whether to make an offer at all, which form it takes and what conditions attach to it. The incentive might be a statement credit, a batch of bonus points, points credited toward a spending target, a reduced or waived annual fee, or some combination. The value and the terms are set for that account rather than for the card product as a whole.
Two features follow from that arrangement. First, an offer answers a closing request rather than an application, so two holders of the same card can end up with different outcomes. Second, the exchange is voluntary on both sides: an issuer can decline to make an offer, and a cardholder can decline one that is made. Issuers do not publish retention offer thresholds, values or frequency, so there is no schedule to consult and no rate of success to quote.
What card terms do record is the closing itself — when a card stops being an enrolled product, what happens to any rewards balance tied to it, and what follows afterwards. For American Express Membership Rewards in the United States, those rules are explicit, and they matter to anyone weighing an offer because the points at stake can disappear at the moment of closure. [5]
What happens when you close a rewards card?
The Membership Rewards Program Terms and Conditions for the United States, last updated October 2026, set out what happens when a product linked to a Rewards Account is cancelled or unenrolled. [5] The outcome turns on whether another product stays linked to the same Rewards Account, which is why the same action can produce very different results for two cardholders.
| Situation | What the terms state |
|---|---|
| You cancel or unenroll your last linked product | You immediately lose all of the points in your Rewards Account. [5] |
| Your last linked product is a Corporate Card | You may be able to redeem points for up to 30 days after cancellation or unenrollment. [5] |
| American Express cancels your card account for inactivity | You have 90 days to use the points in your Rewards Account before losing them. [5] |
| American Express cancels a product for any reason, including death, insolvency or bankruptcy | You lose all the points in your Rewards Account, although the executor of an estate or a personal representative may be able to make a one-time redemption after a cardholder's death by calling 1-800-AXP-EARN. [5] |
There is also a general restriction that runs in the other direction: points generally cannot be used, and the Rewards Account may be cancelled, if a product is in restricted status, cancelled or past due, or if a returned payment is outstanding. [5] New York Card Members are the stated exception — they can keep using points in those scenarios for 90 days by calling the number on the back of their card. [5]
What happens to points you move out first?
Because a closure can wipe a balance, a cardholder may want to know the rules for moving points to an airline or hotel programme beforehand. Membership Rewards points can be transferred to participating partner loyalty programmes after the Rewards Account has been linked to the partner account, and the partner account must be held by the cardholder or by an Additional Card Member whose card was issued at least 90 days before the link is made. [5] [6]
In most cases the transfer must be at least 1,000 points and in multiples of 1,000. [5] Points sent to a U.S. airline frequent flyer programme carry an excise tax offset fee, which offsets the federal excise tax American Express pays on the transfer. [5] Processing typically takes 48 hours, though some programmes delay posting points to the partner account. [5]
The one-way nature of the move is the point to hold on to. Once points are transferred the transfer cannot be reversed, the partner programme's terms apply instead, and transferred points cannot be converted back into Membership Rewards. [5] [6] If an airline loyalty programme stops participating in the Rewards Program, American Express may limit the number of points that can be transferred to it before participation ends, and that limit will be at least 100,000 points. [5]
Exceptions and limits
- No entitlement to an offer. A retention offer depends on the issuer's decision for that account; it is not a benefit listed in a card's terms, and no card or account carries a documented right to one.
- Points are not property. Membership Rewards terms state that points do not belong to the cardholder and are not their property, that they cannot be transferred to someone else's Rewards Account or sold, and that they cannot be passed on as part of a legal action such as a divorce, an inheritance or a bankruptcy. [5]
- The terms can change. American Express may add to or change the programme terms at any time — for example by changing earn or redemption rates, imposing caps or fees, increasing annual and/or other program fees, or cancelling rewards and/or the programme. If the programme itself is cancelled, at least 90 days' notice is given. [5]
- Digital gift cards. If one or more products are closed, a cardholder may lose access to some or all digital gift cards; the card information must be printed before the product closes to keep access afterwards. [5]
- Scope. These rules are the Membership Rewards Program Terms and Conditions for the United States, last updated October 2026, and they relate only to the rewards programme; card products have separate agreements issued at enrolment. [5] Other issuers, and American Express Membership Rewards in other markets, set their own terms and are not described here.
Frequently asked questions
Is a retention offer guaranteed when I ask to cancel a card?
No. An offer is decided for a single account and is discretionary, so an issuer can decline to make one and a cardholder can decline one that is made.
What happens to my Membership Rewards points if I cancel my only American Express card?
You immediately lose all of the points in your Rewards Account when you cancel or unenroll your last linked product. [5]
How long do I have to use points if American Express closes my card for inactivity?
90 days from the closure, according to the Membership Rewards terms. [5]
Can I move points to an airline and then move them back to Membership Rewards?
No. Transferred points cannot be converted back, and the transfer itself cannot be reversed. [5] [6]
Do I lose digital gift cards if I close my card?
You may lose access to some or all of your digital gift cards if products are closed, so the details need to be printed before the closure. [5]
