FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY
What is a suite night award?
Suite night award is a hotel loyalty instrument that a member spends to request an upgrade to a suite or another premium room on an eligible stay. It is a request against live room inventory rather than a purchase of the room: the property confirms the upgrade only if a suitable suite or premium room is still available, so the award is not a guaranteed upgrade at the moment it is lodged.

Key takeaways
- A suite night award changes the room category on a stay; it does not pay for the nights themselves, which is what a free-night award does.
- Marriott Bonvoy lists Nightly Upgrade Awards for Gold Elite members and above, requested after booking from the Confirmation or Reservation Details page. [5]
- The same programme also offers Room Upgrades bought with points (point upgrades) or cash (paid upgrades) for a better view or larger suite, available at select hotels and resorts and applied during booking. [5]
- Upgrade instruments fall under the programme's definition of "Awards", which have no cash value and cannot be sold or transferred except as expressly permitted. [3]
How does a suite night award generally work?
A suite night award sits between two things travellers often confuse: a free-night award, which covers the cost of the room, and an elite complimentary upgrade, which a hotel grants at its own discretion at check-in. The suite night award does neither job exactly. It is a stored entitlement that the member attaches to a particular stay in the hope of moving up a room category, and its value lies in the gap between the room that was booked and the room that is eventually assigned.
Because the instrument is spent against inventory, three things usually decide whether it works. The first is whether the property releases suites or premium rooms for upgrades at all. The second is whether such a room is still unsold on the dates of the stay. The third is how close to arrival the programme allows the request to be matched against the property's remaining rooms. The same award can therefore deliver very different outcomes from one stay to the next, because the room it is matched against changes each time.
Two practical consequences follow. A member who needs a specific room on a specific night cannot treat the award as certainty, and a member who is willing to buy the room outright will usually look at a confirmed premium rate instead. That is why programmes often run both a request-based upgrade instrument and a paid or points-based upgrade path side by side, leaving the traveller to choose between a cheap chance and a certain cost.
Where does Marriott Bonvoy offer suite upgrades?
Marriott Bonvoy documents two upgrade instruments of this kind. Nightly Upgrade Awards let a member request an upgrade after the stay is booked, from the Confirmation or Reservation Details page, and are listed as available to Gold Elite members and above. [5] Room Upgrades work the other way round: the member trades points (point upgrades) or cash (paid upgrades) for a better view or a larger suite, the option is available at select hotels and resorts, and the award is applied during booking. [5]
Within the programme rules, upgrade instruments sit inside the general definition of "Awards", which means any and all awards earned by members in connection with the loyalty programme, including award redemptions. [3] Points, Awards and other member benefits have no cash value and may not be sold, bartered, transferred, assigned, exchanged, purchased or otherwise conveyed except as expressly permitted in the programme rules. [3]
Account administration touches these instruments as well. A member who cancels an account is told that cancellation may affect pending or unused Nightly Upgrade Awards along with Free Night Awards, benefits and reservations, and that unredeemed Points, Awards and other benefits are cancelled or forfeited immediately on cancellation. [3] The programme also notes that awards redeemed before a points forfeiture stay valid unless they are cancelled after the points expiration date and the member has not completed activity to extend it. [3]
Exceptions and limits
- Availability, not entitlement. Marriott describes room upgrades as available at select hotels and resorts rather than everywhere. [5] Properties with limited or unique participation may not offer specific benefits, amenities, offers, Awards and services, even where the property is not explicitly listed as excluded. [3]
- Eligibility floor. The Nightly Upgrade Award option is set out for Gold Elite members and above. [5]
- Programme change. The company may change, limit, modify, supplement, amend, suspend or cancel the programme rules, redemption levels, Award availability, qualifying requirements and conditions of participation with or without notice, even where a change affects the value of points or the ability to obtain certain awards or benefits. [3]
- Enforcement. The company may cancel, suspend, restrict, withhold, reverse, deduct or forfeit points, awards, benefits and transactions where it believes a member has breached programme rules, partner programme terms or applicable law. [3]
- Order of booking. A booked stay comes first for Nightly Upgrade Awards, while the room-upgrade award is applied while the reservation is being made. [5]
Frequently asked questions
Is a suite night award the same as a free night award?
No. A free night award covers the cost of the room, whereas a suite night award is spent on moving to a higher room category. Marriott Bonvoy lists Free Night Awards and Nightly Upgrade Awards as separate instruments, with free nights applied during booking and upgrades requested afterwards. [5]
Who can request a Nightly Upgrade Award in Marriott Bonvoy?
The option is described as available to Gold Elite members and above. [5] Eligible members request it after booking, from the Confirmation or Reservation Details page. [5]
When is a suite upgrade requested — at booking or afterwards?
It depends on the instrument. Marriott Bonvoy's Room Upgrades are applied during booking, when the member chooses a point upgrade or a paid upgrade at a select hotel or resort. [5] Nightly Upgrade Awards run the other way round: the member books first and then requests the upgrade from the reservation screens. [5]
Why might an upgrade request not come through?
Upgrade awards are matched against rooms the property makes available, and Marriott lists room upgrades as available only at select hotels and resorts. [5] Its programme rules also allow it to change award availability and redemption levels with or without notice. [3]
Can suite upgrade awards be sold or transferred?
No. Under the Marriott Bonvoy programme rules, points, awards and other member benefits have no cash value and may not be sold, bartered, transferred, assigned, exchanged, purchased or otherwise conveyed except as expressly permitted. [3]
