Citi Double Cash® Card: Cash Back, Redemptions and Fees

Citi Double Cash® Card is a Mastercard credit card issued by Citi that earns unlimited 2% cash back on purchases — 1% when you buy and 1% as you pay. [1] Cash back is earned in the form of ThankYou® Points, which cardholders can redeem for a statement credit, a direct deposit or a check by mail. [1]

Key takeaways

  • Every purchase earns 2% cash back in total: 1% when you buy and another 1% as you pay the purchase balance, with no cap on how much can be earned and no reward categories to enrol in. [1]
  • Rewards accrue as ThankYou Points at 1 point per $1 spent plus 1 point per $1 paid on the purchase balance, subject to a matching Purchase Tracker balance. [1]
  • The card has no annual fee and no fee for authorized users. [1]
  • Hotel, car rental and attraction bookings made through the Citi Travel® portal earn an extra 3%, bringing the total to 5% on those bookings. [1]
  • For cash-out purposes, 10,000 ThankYou Points can be redeemed for $100. [1]

How do you earn cash back with the Citi Double Cash Card?

Citi splits the reward into two halves. The card pays 1% cash back on every purchase, then a second 1% as the cardholder pays down the purchase balance. [1] Because the cash back is tracked as ThankYou Points, the mechanics are described in points: in each billing cycle the account earns 1 ThankYou Point per $1 spent on purchases, plus 1 ThankYou Point for every $1 paid on the purchase balance, as long as a matching balance exists in the cardholder's Purchase Tracker. [1] Citi's own guidance is that earning the cash back requires paying at least the minimum payment on time. [1]

There is no cap on the amount of cash back the card can earn, and there are no reward categories to enrol in. [1] A higher rate applies to hotels, car rentals and attractions booked through the Citi Travel® portal: they earn an additional 3% on top of the standard 1% when buying and 1% when paying, which Citi totals at 5 ThankYou Points per $1 on those bookings. [1] The extra rate is tied to booking through that portal. [1]

Two earning details are worth knowing. Balance transfers do not earn cash back. [1] Purchases placed on a Citi® Flex Pay plan of $75 or more still earn points, because Citi says points continue to accrue on Flex Pay purchases. [1]

What are Citi Double Cash ThankYou Points worth?

The simplest conversion is one cent per point. Citi's example is that 10,000 ThankYou Points can be taken as a $100 statement credit, a $100 check by mail or a $100 direct deposit to a bank account. [1] Redemptions can be made in the Citi Mobile® App or at citi.com. [1]

Citi's one-cent example covers the three cash-style options; it states that rates for gift cards, travel and Shop with Points at Amazon.com may vary. [1] The value is therefore not fixed across every redemption path listed on the card's page. [1]

What fees does the card charge?

The headline costs are none on the annual side, but several transaction fees are set out in the card's pricing details. [1]

Fees and interest terms on the Citi Double Cash® Card
ItemHow it is charged
Annual feeNone [1]
Authorized user feeNone [1]
Balance transfer feeAn introductory fee applies to transfers completed during the opening period, and a standard fee applies after that; each carries a minimum charge [1]
Foreign purchase feeA percentage of the U.S. dollar amount of each purchase [1]
Cash advance feeEither a flat amount or a percentage of the advance, whichever is greater [1]
Late or returned paymentA variable penalty APR, up to a stated maximum, applies if a payment is late or returned [1]
Minimum interest chargeA flat minimum applies where interest is charged [1]
Purchase APRVariable and based on creditworthiness [1]

The introductory APR on the card applies to balance transfers, not to purchases. [1] Once the introductory period ends, a variable APR based on creditworthiness applies to any unpaid promotional balances and to new balance transfers, and a separate variable purchase APR also based on creditworthiness applies to purchases. [1] Citi also warns that a cardholder who transfers a balance will be charged interest on purchases unless the entire balance, including the transferred amount, is paid by the due date each month. [1]

Exceptions and limits

  • New account bonus eligibility. Bonus ThankYou Points are not available to someone who has received a new account bonus for a Citi Double Cash account in the past 48 months, or who converted another Citi credit card account on which a new account bonus was earned in the last 48 months into a Citi Double Cash account. [1]
  • No rewards on transfers. Balance transfers earn no cash back, so the 2% rate applies to purchases only. [1]
  • Payment behaviour matters. The second 1% depends on paying the purchase balance and on a matching balance sitting in the Purchase Tracker, and Citi frames on-time payment of at least the minimum as the condition for earning cash back. [1]
  • Portal bookings only. The extra 3% is limited to hotels, car rentals and attractions booked through the Citi Travel® portal, not to travel bought elsewhere. [1]
  • Pricing is individual. The purchase APR, balance transfer APR and credit limit are set according to the cardholder's creditworthiness, and applications are subject to credit approval and open to new cardmembers only. [1]
  • Redemption floors. Statement credits and direct deposits have no minimum, while a check by mail requires at least $5, and non-cash options are redeemed at rates that may vary. [1]
