How to compare award chart changes route by route

Award chart devaluation impact analysis is a route-by-route way of comparing what the same award costs before and after a programme changes its mileage levels, holding origin, destination, cabin and award type fixed while keeping date effects in a separate column. United Airlines states in its MileagePlus rules that the amount of mileage required to redeem any award may be substantially increased or decreased, and that any award may be withdrawn, at any time. [7]

Key takeaways

  • MileagePlus rules allow United to change mileage levels, the cash required for an award and award availability, with or without notice, and members may not rely on an award or award level staying available. [7]
  • The cash side belongs in the same table as the miles: award tickets may carry departure taxes, federal inspection fees, passenger facility charges and other charges, paid by the traveller. [7] [8]
  • A higher price on one date does not by itself show a chart change, because blackout dates and award-seat limits can move as well as mileage levels. [7]
  • Award travel earns no award miles or Premier Qualifying Credits in MileagePlus, even when the ticket is paid partly with miles and money. [7]

How do you compare an old and new award chart?

The method is bookkeeping rather than prediction. Each row of the comparison is one award: one city pair, one cabin, one award type and one travel date, with the old miles, the new miles, the old cash charges and the new cash charges in separate columns.

Read both sides from the programme's own award pages. American Airlines reaches its AAdvantage award travel information through the AAdvantage section of aa.com, including the "Book with miles" and "Use miles" entry points. [1] United sets the amount, structure, availability and other criteria for MileagePlus award redemption, and those are subject to modification, cancellation or limitation at its discretion. [7] A figure borrowed from a different programme or a different award type is not a substitute for a missing reading.

Record the cash line as well as the miles line. United's rules allow the cash required and applicable co-pays for an award to be increased, alongside the mileage. [7] A change can therefore arrive as more miles, more cash, or both, and a table with a single column will miss part of it.

Record what the award trip earns. Award miles and Premier Qualifying Credits are not credited for award travel in MileagePlus, including tickets purchased using a combination of miles and money. [7] If a row compares an award against a cash fare, that difference in earning belongs in the row.

Cash items to record on each award row
ItemWhat the MileagePlus rules say
Departure taxesAward tickets may be subject to them; the person using the award pays [7]
Federal inspection feesMay apply to award tickets [7]
Passenger facility chargesMay apply to award tickets [7]
Other fees, charges or taxesMay apply and are the user's responsibility [7]
Redeposit service chargeMay be imposed when an award is cancelled and miles returned; some awards are not eligible for redeposit and will state so [7]

How do you tell a chart change apart from a date change?

A route can get more expensive in two ways that look identical on a booking screen: the mileage level attached to the city pair can move, or the dates can become more restricted or less available. United's rules provide for both, allowing it to withdraw, limit, modify or cancel any award, increase the mileage or cash required, add blackout dates and limit the number of award seats to any or all destinations. [7]

A practical test runs in two passes. Hold the date fixed and vary the city pair; then hold the city pair fixed and vary the date. If the higher figure appears on every date you check for one city pair while other pairs are unchanged, the movement sits with that route's chart level. If only some dates moved, the movement sits with the date. Because mileage levels, blackout dates and seat limits are separate levers in the rules [7], a single reading taken on one route and one date cannot show which of them produced the difference.

Routes can also leave the table for reasons that have nothing to do with price: MileagePlus awards are valid only to destinations served both when the award ticket is issued and at departure, and neither United nor its partners are liable for schedule changes that cancel service to a destination. [7]

How do you recalculate cents per point?

The cents-per-point figure puts the award and a cash fare on one scale. Take the cash fare for the same itinerary and subtract the taxes, fees and charges you would still pay on the award, since those are payable by the person using the award. [7] [8] Divide what remains by the miles the award now costs, then repeat the calculation with the old mileage figure. The gap between the two results is the impact of the chart change on that row.

Two inputs distort the sum if they are left out. First, recalculate with current cash charges rather than remembered ones, because the cash required and applicable co-pays can be increased as well as the mileage. [7] Second, the award ticket gives up the award miles and Premier Qualifying Credits a cash ticket would earn [7], which is part of what the award costs you.

Keep the output in proportion. United states that calculations made in connection with the MileagePlus programme, including the value of benefits, are made at its discretion and are considered final. [7] A cents-per-point figure built from your own quotes is a comparison of two itineraries on a given date, not a rate published by the programme.

What limits a route-by-route comparison?

  • No notice. United may change the rules, benefits, conditions or mileage levels in whole or in part at any time, with or without notice, even though changes may affect the value of mileage already accumulated, and members may not rely on an award or award level staying available. [7]
  • Changed plans. If an award is redeemed and later cancelled or returned under the applicable rules, the miles are redeposited subject to a service charge, and some awards are not eligible for redeposit and will state so. [7]
  • Service changes. Awards are valid only to destinations served at both issuance and departure, and neither United nor its partners are liable for schedule changes that cancel service. [7]
  • Earning on award travel. Programme rules say award miles and Premier Qualifying Credits are not credited for award travel, including miles-and-money tickets. [7] Separately, the terms of the 2026 MileagePlus Premier Status Match Challenge, open for applications between 8 January and 21 December 2026, count PQP and PQF earned on United- or United Express-operated travel on MileagePlus Award tickets or with Money + Miles toward that specific offer. [8]
  • Scope. The rules quoted here are MileagePlus rules and apply to MileagePlus awards [7]; other programmes sit outside this page. Route-level results also depend on cabin, date, taxes and award type, so two readers comparing the same chart can reach different conclusions.

Frequently asked questions

Does a chart change affect miles I already have?

MileagePlus rules allow mileage levels to change with or without notice, even though changes may affect the value of mileage already accumulated. [7]

Do I still pay taxes and fees on an award ticket?

Yes, where they apply: award tickets may be subject to departure taxes, federal inspection fees, passenger facility charges and other charges, and the person using the award is responsible for paying them. [7] [8]

Do award flights earn miles or elite credit?

Award travel earns no award miles or Premier Qualifying Credits in MileagePlus, including tickets bought with a combination of miles and money. [7] The 2026 Status Match Challenge terms separately count PQP and PQF from United or United Express travel on award tickets or with Money + Miles toward that offer. [8]

Can an award I have compared be withdrawn after I book?

United may withdraw, limit, modify or cancel any award [7], and awards are valid only to destinations served at both issuance and departure. [7] If an award is cancelled and the miles redeposited, a service charge may apply. [7]

What should I do when one side of a row has no published figure?

Leave the cell empty rather than filling it from another route or programme. United sets the amount, structure and availability of MileagePlus award redemption [7], so only a figure published for that award is comparable.
