How to Book Etihad Guest Awards
Etihad Guest awards are redemptions paid for with Etihad Guest Miles, the spendable currency in Etihad Airways' loyalty programme. Etihad says those miles can be used to fly with Etihad and its partner airlines, to upgrade to a higher cabin, and to buy rewards in its Reward Shop. [1] [2]
Facts checked: 18 October 2026
Key takeaways
- Etihad Guest Miles are the currency for redemptions and are described separately from Tier Miles, the currency used to reach the programme's five tiers: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Emerald. [1]
- Etihad lists three ways to spend miles: flights with Etihad and partner airlines, cabin upgrades, and the Reward Shop. [2]
- If the balance does not cover a flight, Etihad says the remainder can be paid with a debit or credit card. [2]
- Etihad states a headline "as low as 10,000 miles". [1] [3]
Before you search: activation and miles
Etihad says that after signing up you must activate your account before you can start earning or spending miles, so an account that has never been activated will not get as far as a redemption. [1] Balances and transaction history sit under My profile once you log in at etihad.com or through the Etihad app. [1]
Two balances matter, and only one of them buys tickets. Etihad Guest Miles are the miles that can be spent on flights, upgrades and rewards; Tier Miles are earned to move up tiers, with members needing the required number of Tier Miles within 12 months to climb. [1] A large Tier Miles total does not itself describe what an award will cost. [1]
If you are short of miles because a flight was never credited, Etihad allows miles to be claimed for eligible flights flown as far as three months before you joined the programme, subject to a request being submitted. [1] That is worth checking before you assume an award is out of reach. [1]
Pricing an award and topping up
The redemption route Etihad describes is the flights option under Spend miles: use your miles to fly with Etihad and its partner airlines, and if you don't have enough, pay the rest with a debit or credit card. [2] Etihad also says its app can be used to earn and spend miles and to keep track of the balance. [1]
Etihad publishes a marketing floor: flights "for as low as 10,000 miles". [1] That is not a quote for a particular route, cabin or date. Readers who want to understand how award space behaves in general can start with award availability.
Upgrades are a separate redemption path. Etihad says miles can be used to upgrade to Business, First or The Residence®, which means an upgrade award is priced and handled as its own product rather than as a flight redemption. [2] The Reward Shop, where miles buy gadgets, fashion, beauty and travel essentials, is a third path and is unrelated to flying. [2] For cabin-by-cabin booking mechanics, see the business and first class award walkthrough.
Partner flights, upgrades and family miles
Miles can be spent on flights operated by Etihad and by its partner airlines, and miles can also be earned on partner airline flights. [1] [2] How partner earning is credited is covered on the partner earning page.
When you do book a flight that another carrier operates, work through the partner award booking checklist so that the operating carrier's own conditions are confirmed before you commit miles.
Family membership is the pooling feature Etihad describes: members can combine miles and share rewards with family members. [1]
Exceptions and limits
- Taxes and surcharges. The general mechanics are explained in the award taxes and surcharges guide.
- Ticket validity, stopovers and routing.
- Names and transfers.
- The 10,000-mile figure. It is presented as a starting price, not a quotation, and should not be read as the cost of any specific award. [1]
- Tier Miles are not spendable. Etihad describes them only as the currency for reaching tiers, in contrast with Etihad Guest Miles. [1]
