How to Book Qantas Frequent Flyer Awards

Qantas Classic Flight Rewards are fixed-points award seats on eligible Qantas, Jetstar, Emirates, oneworld and selected partner flights to more than 1,300 destinations. [1] A Qantas Frequent Flyer membership is required to earn and use Qantas Points, and a joining fee may apply. [1] Members search in the Rewards view on qantas.com or through Qantas Contact Centres and pay taxes, fees and carrier charges in addition to the points. [1]

Key takeaways

  • Classic Flight Rewards have a fixed points amount year-round and appear with the red Reward ribbon; availability is limited and some flights have none. [1]
  • Online bookings are possible from 353 days ahead until two hours before domestic departure or four hours before international departure; contact-centre bookings close at least 24 hours before departure, and earlier in some locations. [1]
  • The points price excludes taxes, fees and carrier charges, which are quoted at booking; some departures from Australia allow payment of those charges with points, while other bookings require an approved card. [1]
  • oneworld Classic Flight Rewards use distance or return pricing, are capped at 35,000 miles per itinerary, and require at least two oneworld airlines other than Qantas. [1]

Finding award seats

To book online, sign in to Qantas Frequent Flyer, search for flights with the “Rewards” option selected, choose flights marked by the red Reward ribbon, select them and complete the booking. [1] For international trips, Qantas says the Rewards view shows Classic Flight Rewards across Qantas, Jetstar and 30 partner airlines, while the All Flights view can combine a Classic Flight Reward with a Qantas cash fare. [1] The award search workflow sets out a broader search process.

Qantas provides a points calculator for Classic Flight Reward seats and upgrades. [2] For multi-city trips it recommends the multi-city tool, “Book with Rewards”, and varying dates and stopovers. [2]

Availability is capacity-controlled: Qantas says Classic Flight Rewards are subject to capacity controls, are limited and may be unavailable on some flights, and advises flexibility with dates and times. [1] Booking opens up to 353 days ahead. [1] On the website, bookings can be made until two hours before domestic departure or four hours before international departure. [1] See award availability and the award calendar for planning.

Pricing and payment

Classic Flight Rewards have a fixed points amount year-round, excluding taxes, fees and carrier charges. [1] If Classic and Classic Plus are both available for a selected date, Qantas shows the lowest points fare. [1]

Taxes, fees and carrier charges are payable to Qantas in addition to points, excluding third-party airport amounts; points and charges can change and are quoted at booking, and the Classic page was accurate as at 10 October 2025. [1] The Qantas Frequent Flyer terms cited here are effective 27 August 2026. [3]

For Qantas, Jetstar and selected airline-partner Classic Flight Rewards departing Australia, points may be used for taxes, fees and carrier charges on the Qantas website payment page, excluding local airport fees or charges collected at check-in. [1] All other Classic Flight Rewards must be paid with an approved payment card. [1]

Classic Plus is separate: Qantas lists it with a blue ribbon, fluctuating points, Qantas-only flights and wider availability, while Classic has the red ribbon, fixed points, limited availability and Qantas, Jetstar and partner flights. [1] Changes to Classic Plus may need more cash; changes to Classic may need more points. [1]

oneworld Classic Flight Rewards are based on total distance travelled or return flights, while other Classic options are based on one-way Trips; they are limited to oneworld airlines and affiliates, cannot include any other airline, can run to 35,000 miles per itinerary, and need at least two oneworld airlines other than Qantas. [1] See round-the-world award for the wider concept.

Ticketing, changes and partner trips

Members can book for themselves or an eligible family member. [1] Classic Flight Rewards do not earn Qantas Points; Points Club and Points Club Plus members earn Status Credits on Classic Flight Rewards with a Qantas flight number. [1]

For a given cabin and subject to availability, Qantas offers either a Classic or Classic Plus Flight Reward at booking. [1] Classic and cash bookings cannot be changed into Classic Plus, or vice versa. [1]

Both products are upgradeable, allow cabins and fare types to be combined in one booking, share the same reward change and cancellation fees, and Qantas lists no points or Status Credit earn except for Points Club members. [1] On a Classic booking, members can request a Classic Upgrade Reward from Economy to Premium Economy, Economy to Business or Premium Economy to Business; requests may fail, and points are deducted only if the upgrade is confirmed. [1]

Changes to a Reward can need additional points or money, a Change Fee, extra taxes, fees and carrier charges, and, where applicable, a Service Fee. [3] If non-Flight Reward fares are combined with Flight Rewards, the most restrictive fare condition applies to the Flight Reward segments for changes, cancellations and refunds. [1]

Partner Classic Flight Rewards are available on eligible flights on Qantas, Jetstar, Emirates, oneworld member airlines and selected Qantas Frequent Flyer airline partners and affiliates, remain capacity-controlled, and are quoted at booking. [1] Use the partner award booking checklist before finalising a partner itinerary.

Exceptions and limits

  • Points payment is limited. Points can be used for taxes, fees and carrier charges only on Qantas, Jetstar and selected airline-partner Classic Flight Rewards departing Australia; the option excludes local airport fees or charges collected at check-in, and all other Classic Flight Rewards are payable with an approved payment card. [1]
  • Classic Plus is not interchangeable. It is a separate product with its own points pricing and availability, and a Classic or cash booking cannot be changed into Classic Plus, or the reverse. [1]
  • Contact-centre timing and fees. Contact-centre bookings must be made at least 24 hours before scheduled departure, some locations require earlier booking, and a Reward Assistance fee applies; Platinum One members do not pay that fee when booking Classic Flight Rewards and Classic Upgrade Rewards with points through contact centres, while other fees remain. [1]
  • oneworld restrictions. oneworld Classic Flight Rewards cannot include airlines outside oneworld, are capped at 35,000 miles per itinerary, and require travel on at least two oneworld member airlines other than Qantas. [1]
  • Partner detail not published.
  • Points must be available. Qantas Points expire at midnight Sydney time at the end of the 18th consecutive month in which the member has not earned points or Status Credits or redeemed points, excluding family transfers and transfers from Qantas Business Rewards. [3] Expired points cannot be re-credited. [3]
