GUIDE
How to understand Etihad Guest status match
Etihad Guest is the loyalty programme of Etihad Airways, the Abu Dhabi-based carrier, and it runs five tiers: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Emerald. Members move up a tier by earning the required number of Tier Miles within 12 months [1], and the programme's terms state that earning Tier Miles is the only way for a member to attain, retain and upgrade Etihad Guest Tier Status [5].

Key takeaways
- Etihad Guest has five tiers, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Emerald, and members climb them by earning Tier Miles within a 12-month window [1].
- Tier Miles are separate from the Etihad Guest Miles spent on flights, upgrades and rewards; Tier Miles cannot be redeemed and carry no cash value [1] [5].
- Tier Miles are valid for 12 months and their validity is not extended, and tier upgrade, retention and downgrade are recalculated every year on the Tier Miles earned in the preceding 12 months [5].
- Etihad reserves discretion to award bonus Tier Miles to all members, a selection of members or an individual member, and to make Tier Miles and promotional offers available to selected members [5].
- Platinum and Emerald members keep their miles balance without expiry while that status is maintained, and after a downgrade the balance stays valid for 18 months from the downgrade date [5].
What are the Etihad Guest tiers?
Etihad Guest lists five tiers in ascending order: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Emerald [1]. Etihad's description starts a member at Bronze and moves them on to Silver, Gold, Platinum and Emerald as the required Tier Miles are earned within 12 months [1].
The programme separates two mile balances. Etihad Guest Miles are the miles spent on flights, upgrades and rewards, while Tier Miles are described as the currency used to reach higher tiers and unlock more benefits [1]. Tier Miles cannot be redeemed for rewards and have no cash value [5].
Etihad illustrates the ladder with a single worked example: a member who earns 25,000 Tier Miles in a year, including 10,000 Tier Miles from flying, moves from Bronze to Silver and gains lounge access in Abu Dhabi [1].
How is Etihad Guest tier status earned?
Under the programme terms, the annual calculation looks back over the preceding 12 months of Tier Miles and decides whether a member upgrades, retains or is downgraded [5]. Earning Tier Miles is the only route to those tiers, because Etihad Guest Tier Segments have been discontinued [5].
| Item | Published rule |
|---|---|
| Tier ladder | Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Emerald [1] |
| Tier currency | Tier Miles, earned within 12 months [1] |
| Assessment cycle | Upgrade, retention and downgrade calculated every year on Tier Miles earned in the preceding 12 months [5] |
| Validity of Tier Miles | 12 months, with no extension [5] |
| Redemption value | None; Tier Miles cannot be redeemed and have no cash value [5] |
Not every flight produces Tier Miles. Only qualifying fares on flown qualifying flights count, and redemption fare classes N, I and O are ineligible, except where a Promo seat is booked in a Comfort or Deluxe Fare Brand [5]. Tier Miles follow the fare brand of the revenue ticket the member paid for, and no Tier Miles are earned on complimentary upgrades or on upgrade rewards [5]. Where a member uses the Cash + Miles option on an Etihad-designated ticket and the flight is a qualifying flight operated by Etihad Airways, Tier Miles can be earned [5].
The terms also separate Tier Miles earned from flying with Etihad Airways or partner airlines from Tier Miles earned through non-airline transactions such as Etihad Guest co-branded credit cards, Etihad Guest payment cards and Miles on the Go partners [5]. Where the member has supplied the necessary details at ticketing or check-in, miles for qualifying flights are credited within seven days of travel [5]. How the tier thresholds compare across programmes is covered in elite qualification thresholds.
Can Tier Miles be credited outside the standard thresholds?
The terms give Etihad discretion to credit Tier Miles beyond the standard earning rules. Etihad may make bonus awards of Tier Miles to all members in general, to a selection of members, or to an individual member [5]. It also reserves the right to make Tier Miles and promotional offers available to selected members based on flight activity, geographic location, Etihad Guest programme participation or information supplied by the member [5].
Those decisions rest with Etihad, and the terms say the conditions attached to any promotional offer may be updated or modified at any time without prior notice [5]. For how airlines generally structure matches and challenges, see status match and challenge.
Exceptions and limits
- Status cannot be passed on. Etihad Guest membership is not transferable [5]. Misuse includes selling, transferring or purchasing for cash or other consideration any rewards, benefits, Etihad Guest Miles, Etihad Guest Tier Status or Tier Miles, and misuse causes the membership to be cancelled with immediate effect at Etihad's discretion [5].
- Who can hold an account. Subject to local laws, membership is open to any individual at least two years of age, and unless Etihad expressly specifies otherwise it is open only to individuals, not to companies, trusts, partnerships or other entities [5].
- Inactivity and cancellation. After 36 continuous months of inactivity on the account, Etihad reserves the right to terminate the membership [5]. A member who cancels membership immediately loses the Etihad Guest Miles and Tier Miles credited to the account [5].
- Family Membership does not pool status. A Family Head and each Family Guest accrue Tier Miles and attain or maintain their own tier status, and in determining a Family Head's status no account is taken of miles or flight activity attributable to Family Guests [5].
- Downgrades and miles validity. The miles balance of a Platinum or Emerald member does not expire while that status is maintained; once downgraded, the total balance is valid for 18 months from the downgrade date [5]. For other members, a Qualifying Activity extends miles validity by 18 months, and without one the balance expires on the last day of the 18th month after the last Qualifying Activity, at 23:30 Gulf Standard Time [5].
