How to earn Infinity MileageLands miles on Star Alliance flights

Infinity MileageLands is the frequent flyer programme of EVA Air, and its published rules credit miles for travel on Star Alliance partner flights as well as on EVA Air and UNI Air international flights. [3] The programme separates Award Miles, which can be spent on awards, from Status Miles, which are the basis for tier upgrade and renewal. [3] Crediting depends on the fare conditions attached to the ticket and on which carrier actually operates the flight, so alliance membership alone does not tell a member whether a particular flight will earn. [3] [4]

Key takeaways

  • EVA Air's earning page names Star Alliance partner flights as a source of both Award Miles and Status Miles, but only Status Miles are used as the basis for tier upgrade and renewal. [3]
  • Accrual follows the lower of the booking class on the ticket and the class actually flown. [3] [4]
  • A flight carrying an EVA Air or UNI Air flight number but operated by another carrier does not earn. [3] [4]

What the programme publishes about partner earning

The earning page states that miles from EVA Air and UNI Air international flights, from Star Alliance airline partner flights, from Star Alliance connecting partner flights, and from hotel, car rental and credit card partners can all be credited to an Infinity MileageLands account. [3] Star Alliance's own member list describes the alliance as uniting 26 airlines, and separately identifies Juneyao Air as a connecting partner. [2]

The page then splits the two mile types. Award Miles are described as miles earned on EVA Air and UNI Air international flights, Star Alliance partner flights, Star Alliance connecting partner flights, partners and birthday offers, and they can be used for award tickets, cabin upgrades and other awards. [3] Status Miles are the miles accumulated on EVA Air and UNI Air international flights and on Star Alliance partner flights, and they are what the programme uses to decide tier upgrades and renewals. [3] The practical consequence is that a partner flight can matter twice over — once for spendable miles and once for status progress — but the two are counted under different rules. [3]

Booking class, operating carrier and fare conditions

Booking class sets the rate. The programme says accrual is calculated on whichever is lower, the booking class shown on the ticket or the class actually flown. [3] [4] For tickets upgraded into booking classes Z or U, the miles are credited only to an EVA Air membership account and cannot be credited to another partner airline's programme, and the calculation is based on the booking class on the ticket the member holds. [3]

The operating carrier must match. On the EVA Air and UNI Air side, a ticket with an EVA Air or UNI Air flight number that is flown by a non-EVA Air, non-UNI Air carrier does not accrue. [3] [4] The accrual page adds that specific flights carrying their own applicable accrual rules are handled under those rules instead. [3]

Some fares never earn. On EVA Air and UNI Air flights, the following ticket types are not eligible for mileage or sector accrual: discounted and free tickets such as award tickets, free tickets, tickets with no face value and travel-industry or airline free or discounted tickets; group tickets, such as booking class G; charter tickets; infant tickets; exchange tickets; promotional or specified fares; and other promotional fares marked during a campaign as ineligible. [3]

EVA Air and UNI Air flights. Award and status mile ratio: 175% in C, 150% in J and 125% in D in Royal Laurel, Premium Laurel and Business Class; 125% in K, 115% in L and T and 100% in P in Premium Economy; and 100% in Y and B, 75% in M, H and Q and 50% in S, W and V in Economy, alongside sector counts. [3] Alongside those ratios, an extra elite bonus of 25% for Diamond and Gold card holders and 15% for Silver card holders. [3]

One programme per flight. Each earning can be credited to one programme only, and miles already credited to a membership account cannot be converted to, or combined with, another airline's programme. [3] [4] For general background on how carriers credit partner flights, see the partner earning term and the Star Alliance guide.

Getting a missing credit onto the account

The programme sets out conditions that decide whether a flight lands in the account at all. The name used at booking, ticketing, airport check-in, hotel booking or car rental must match the name on the membership card, and the card number has to be given at each of those steps. [3] [4] Accrual counts flights taken after the membership application, although system transmission can take three to five days, and travel in the six months before joining can still be credited. [3]

If a mileage statement does not match what was flown, the member is asked to request a correction within six months of the flight date, or of the partner transaction date, attaching the ticket and boarding pass or the voucher or receipt, through a member service centre. [3] EVA Air and UNI Air international flights can instead be claimed online through account management on evaair.com, and corrected or claimed miles appear on the following statement. [3] Members are advised to keep tickets, boarding passes, hotel vouchers and receipts for six months for this purpose. [3] EVA Air reserves the final right of review over accrual and may correct or recover miles, certificates or awards that do not match the rules. [3] [4] Credited miles stay valid for 36 months from the flight date, or from the date a points transfer is requested from a partner system, and expired miles lapse automatically without further notice. [3] [4]

Exceptions and limits

  • Status progress is not automatic from a partner sector. The upgrade and renewal page sets Silver, Gold and Diamond requirements as Status miles on qualifying international flights or a set number of qualifying EVA Air/UNI Air international flights, and states that flight sectors of Star Alliance member airlines cannot be credited toward membership upgrades and renewals. [5] Because the earning page counts Star Alliance partner flights toward Status Miles, how a given partner flight is treated depends on which path — miles or sectors — is being assessed. [3] [5]
  • Upgraded classes stay in-house. Miles from tickets upgraded into booking classes Z or U can be credited only to an EVA Air account, not to another partner airline's programme. [3]
  • Membership ending wipes the balance. Membership cannot be transferred and each member holds one card number; when membership ends the account is not retained and accrued miles and electronic upgrade certificates are void. [4]
  • Partner benefits can vary. Miles, tier status, tier validity and other benefits obtained through a partner's products or services may differ according to membership status or other factors. [4]
  • Fee amounts, minimum-mileage guarantees and booking-class percentages for individual Star Alliance carriers are not stated on the pages used here, so no rate can be quoted for a named partner. [3]
