How to qualify for GOL Smiles status: tiers and benefits
GOL Smiles status is the tier a member holds in Smiles, the loyalty programme run by the Brazilian airline GOL Linhas Aéreas S.A.; members start in the Smiles category and can move to Prata, Ouro, Diamante and Diamante Magno by collecting qualifying miles and/or qualifying segments in a calendar year. [6] The top category, Diamante Magno, is published as requiring 50,000 qualifying miles and 50 qualifying segments in the same calendar year. [6]
Facts checked: 18 October 2026
Key takeaways
- Smiles lists five categories: Smiles, Prata, Ouro, Diamante and Diamante Magno. [6]
- The qualification window is the calendar year, and Diamante Magno requires both 50,000 qualifying miles and 50 qualifying segments. [6]
- Qualifying miles come only from specified sources; bonus miles and other Smiles miles do not count. [6]
- Published benefits begin at Prata, with priority services and lounge access starting at Ouro. [3]
What are the GOL Smiles tiers?
Smiles calls its status levels Categoria Smiles, and the programme regulation lists five of them. [6] The thresholds are based on qualifying miles and qualifying segments collected during the calendar year, from January to December. [6]
| Category | Qualifying miles | Qualifying segments |
|---|---|---|
| Smiles | 0–5,999 | 0–5 |
| Prata | 6,000–11,999 | 6–11 |
| Ouro | 12,000–23,999 | 12–23 |
| Diamante | 24,000 or more | 24 or more |
| Diamante Magno | 50,000 or more | 50 or more |
For Smiles through Diamante, the regulation expresses the threshold as qualifying miles and/or qualifying segments; Diamante Magno is written with both requirements. [6] If a member reaches both the qualifying-mile and qualifying-segment level in the same year, the regulation says the two counts are applied together, not one in place of the other. [6]
How do you earn GOL Smiles qualifying miles and segments?
A qualifying segment is defined by the type of flight and how it was bought or redeemed. The regulation counts a segment operated by GOL and bought through GOL channels, except Smiles channels, or redeemed with Smiles miles through Smiles channels. [6] It also counts a GOL or partner-airline segment on a fare that accrues Smiles miles, where the member requested accrual. [6] A partner-operated segment issued with Smiles miles counts only when the itinerary includes a GOL-operated segment. [6]
Qualifying miles are separate from ordinary Smiles miles and accrue at published rates. [6] GOL-operated tickets produce qualifying miles for domestic and South America tickets, and 2 qualifying miles per US$1 for other international tickets. [6] Smiles credit cards and active Clube Smiles plans produce 1 qualifying mile for every 10 Smiles miles, while partner-airline Smiles miles produce 1 qualifying mile for every 1 Smiles mile. [6] Bonus miles and other Smiles miles outside those sources do not generate qualifying miles. [6]
The regulation valid from 17 June 2026 applies those GOL ticket rates to tickets purchased on or after that date; tickets purchased before then remain under the previous rules. [4] A member must supply a valid Smiles number when the activity happens, and qualifying miles are calculated per accrual transaction and rounded up or down. [6] GOL and its airline partners may change the conversion ratio, including through campaigns for a set period. [6] For partner flights, each airline partner sets its own earning rules and publishes them on the Smiles site. [6]
What benefits come with each GOL Smiles tier?
GOL publishes a benefit list by Smiles category. [3] The published benefits are:
| Benefit | Tiers |
|---|---|
| Free baggage | Prata, Ouro, Diamante, Diamante Magno |
| Priority boarding and check-in | Ouro, Diamante, Diamante Magno |
| GOL Smiles Lounge access | Ouro, Diamante, Diamante Magno |
| Rota Favorita | Prata, Ouro, Diamante, Diamante Magno |
| Free anticipation of flights | Prata, Ouro, Diamante, Diamante Magno |
| Free GOL+ Conforto seat | Diamante, Diamante Magno |
Rota Favorita lets members from Prata upward register frequently flown routes in advance and earn bonus miles on them. [3] [4] Those are bonus miles, which the qualification rules exclude from qualifying miles. [6]
How is Smiles status different from GOL fare rules?
Smiles categories and GOL fares are published as separate sets of rules. The Smiles regulation covers membership, Smiles miles, qualifying miles, categories and redemptions. [6] GOL's own website separately lists fares, rebooking, cancellation and refunds, and baggage. [2] Free baggage is a Smiles benefit for Prata and above, while the fare conditions for a particular ticket are published by GOL separately. [2] [3] Travellers need to check both the Smiles tier benefit and the rules for the fare they buy. [2] [3]
How long does GOL Smiles status last?
Prata, Ouro, Diamante and Diamante Magno cards are valid from the date they are earned until the end of the current calendar year plus 15 months. [6] Requalification is checked on 1 April each year against activity through 23:59 on 31 December of the previous year. [6] A member who does not reach the required qualifying miles or segments to stay in the current category is reclassified one category lower for 12 months; the base Smiles category is not downgraded and remains until promotion. [6] A member who does reach the requirement has the card extended for an additional 12 months. [6]
Exceptions and limits
- Diamante Magno is written with both a qualifying-mile and a qualifying-segment requirement; the lower categories use “and/or”. [6]
- Some tickets do not generate Smiles miles: charter flights; courtesy, prize or award tickets; promotional tickets with specific fare conditions; non-regular fares such as group and negotiated fares; and taxes and airport fees. [6]
- Qualifying segments also depend on a fare that accrues Smiles miles and on the member requesting accrual. [6]
- Rota Favorita and other promotional bonuses are bonus miles, and bonus miles are excluded from qualifying miles. [4] [6]
- The GOL ticket earning rate changed for tickets purchased on or after 17 June 2026; earlier purchases remain under the previous rules. [4]
- GOL and airline partners may change the qualifying-mile conversion ratio and may run temporary campaign rates. [6]
Frequently asked questions
How many qualifying miles are needed for GOL Smiles Diamante?
Diamante requires 24,000 or more qualifying miles, or 24 or more qualifying segments, in the calendar year. [6]
Does Diamante Magno require both miles and segments?
Yes. The regulation sets Diamante Magno at 50,000 or more qualifying miles and 50 or more qualifying segments in the same calendar year. [6]
Do bonus miles count toward GOL Smiles status?
No. The qualifying-mile rules exclude bonus miles, and Smiles miles outside the listed sources do not generate qualifying miles. [6]
When are GOL Smiles categories reviewed?
Requalification is checked on 1 April each year, using activity through 31 December of the previous year. [6]
Do partner airline flights earn GOL Smiles status?
Partner flights can contribute if the fare accrues Smiles miles and the member requests accrual; a partner-operated award segment counts only when the itinerary includes a GOL-operated segment. [6]
