How to use a JR Shikoku rail pass

JR Shikoku rail passes are the rail-pass options that cover JR-Shikoku conventional lines: either the nationwide Japan Rail Pass, offered jointly by the six JR Group companies for unlimited rides on JR trains across Japan [2], or an area pass such as the seven-day Setouchi Area Pass, valid on JR-Shikoku conventional lines and on listed limited expresses inside its mapped area for ¥22,000 per adult [5].

Key takeaways

  • Coverage for JR Shikoku travel comes in two shapes: a nationwide pass valid on JR trains all over Japan [2], and area passes valid only inside a mapped area that includes JR-Shikoku conventional lines [5].
  • The Setouchi Area Pass is the worked example here: seven consecutive days for ¥22,000 adult and ¥11,000 child, covering JR-West and JR-Shikoku conventional lines, listed limited expresses and the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hakata [5].
  • Reserved seats must be booked before boarding, and non-reserved seating is not available on trains that carry reserved seats only [5].
  • The Setouchi Area Pass is sold to holders of a foreign passport entering Japan as a Temporary Visitor, and Japanese nationals cannot use it even if they hold permanent residence abroad [5].
  • Trains outside the pass conditions are simply not covered — the Tokaido and Kyushu Shinkansen are named as unusable on the Setouchi Area Pass [5].

Which trains does a JR Shikoku rail pass cover?

With the Japan Rail Pass, a traveller can ride JR trains all over Japan as many times as they want, including Shinkansen bullet trains and limited express trains [2]. The pass is offered jointly by the six JR Group companies, and JR lines in Japan total more than 19,000 km, reaching from Hokkaido to Kyushu [2]. Reserved seats can be booked in advance only when the pass is bought on the official Japan Rail Pass website [2]. Purchasers can also buy a separate special ticket to ride the Nozomi and Mizuho trains on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen lines [2].

Area passes work differently: they give unlimited travel inside a mapped area rather than across the country [5]. The Setouchi Area Pass, published by West Japan Railway Company (JR West), includes unlimited rides in Okayama, Takamatsu, Hiroshima and Yamaguchi, and its valid trains are set out by category [5].

How much does the Setouchi Area Pass cost?

Pass prices are set according to the date of purchase, not the date of exchange or use [5]. For seven days the pass costs ¥22,000 for an adult and ¥11,000 for a child, and JR West states that prices are subject to change [5].

Setouchi Area Pass price, 7 days
TravellerPrice
Adult — 12 or over when the exchange order is issued or the pass purchased¥22,000 [5]
Child — 6 to 11 at the same point¥11,000 [5]

One adult or child pass holder can accompany up to two children aged 1 to 5 for free, and each further infant needs a child pass; babies under one year old travel free [5]. A child pass is required where an accompanied infant occupies a reserved seat alone or travels alone [5]. Prices and related information are stated to be current as of 1 August 2024 [5].

Eligibility is narrow: the user must hold a passport issued by a foreign government and must enter Japan as a Temporary Visitor, and an individual cannot buy or exchange more than one of the same ticket for the same period of use [5]. The passport must be presented to receive the pass and shown to JR staff on request [5].

How do seat reservations work?

Reserved-seat tickets can be reserved at a ticket vending machine or a station ticket office [5]. Seat reservations can also be made online for passes reserved through JR-WEST ONLINE TRAIN RESERVATION, although from the seventh booking seats must be reserved at a JR ticket office [5]. Reserved seating must be booked before boarding, and non-reserved seating is not available on trains that have reserved seats only [5].

Booking windows depend on the channel. Online reservations open one month before boarding, starting at 10:00 am Japan Standard Time on the same day of the preceding month, and a pass bought from a travel agency can be purchased up to one month before the first day of use [5]. Online payment must be made by credit card, and virtual or numberless credit cards cannot be used [5]. An exchange order bought outside Japan must be exchanged within three months of issue [5].

Upgrades sit outside the pass: Green car and sleeper accommodation need separate tickets and express tickets, and paid seating such as “A Seat” on Kansai local and rapid trains carries a separate charge [5].

How long is a pass valid, and can it be changed or refunded?

A rail pass is available all year round and is valid for consecutive days [5]. It runs from 0:00 on the start day to 24:00 on the last day, Japan Standard Time; where validity ends while the holder is on a train on the last day, the pass remains valid for the fare until the following day so long as the passenger does not exit the station, and for ticket charges so long as the passenger does not leave the train [5].

After an exchange order has been exchanged, the starting date, duration and pass type cannot be changed [5]. Validity periods are not extended even when train services are unavailable or delayed [5]. An exchange order that is never exchanged can be refunded by the overseas travel agency that sold it, with a handling fee [5]. Once exchanged, the pass can be refunded only at ticket counters at exchange locations in Japan, for the sale price minus a 10% handling fee with a minimum of ¥220 per pass [5]. No refund is given once a pass has started or expired, or because of service disruption or delays [5].

Exceptions and limits

  • Ferries and non-rail segments. Only the JR West Miyajima Ferry is valid, and a visitation tax of ¥100 is payable on boarding (as of October 2023); the high-speed boats of the Shodoshima Ferry cannot be used [5].
  • Leaving the area. The pass is valid for unlimited travel only in the area shown on the map, so journeys and trains outside it are outside coverage, and the Tokaido and Kyushu Shinkansen are named as trains that cannot be used [5].
  • Who cannot use it. Japanese nationals cannot use the Setouchi Area Pass, including those who hold permanent residence abroad [5].
  • Lost passes. A lost or stolen rail pass cannot be reissued [5].
  • Governing terms. Conditions of use are set by JR-West’s Conditions of Carriage and by Japanese law, and where a foreign-language version differs from the Japanese version, the Japanese version prevails [5].

Frequently asked questions

Can residents of Japan use a JR Shikoku area pass?

The Setouchi Area Pass requires a passport issued by a foreign government and entry as a Temporary Visitor, and Japanese nationals are excluded even if they hold permanent residence abroad [5].

Do I have to reserve a seat before boarding?

For reserved seating, seats must be reserved before boarding, and on trains with reserved seats only there is no non-reserved option to fall back on [5]. Japan Rail Pass holders can book reserved seats in advance only if the pass was bought on the official website [2].

Does the pass still cover me if my train is delayed?

Validity periods are not extended for unavailable or delayed services, and no refund is given for those reasons [5].

Can I change the start date after buying?

Once an exchange order has been exchanged, the starting date, duration and pass type cannot be changed [5].

Is the Shodoshima ferry included?

No: the high-speed boat services of the Shodoshima Ferry cannot be used on the Setouchi Area Pass, and among ferries only the JR West Miyajima Ferry is valid [5].
