How to earn United MileagePlus miles
United MileagePlus is the frequent flyer programme of United Airlines, and its miles are credited only when a member uses a means of accrual the programme recognises — a flight actually flown on United or an eligible partner airline, or a purchase made on an authorised debit or credit card, among other recognised activity. [5]
Facts checked: 18 October 2026
Key takeaways
- MileagePlus miles accrue only through means of accrual the programme recognises, and members may accrue only from their own use of a service, whether that is air travel or something else. [5]
- Air miles are credited only to individual members and only for flights the member actually flew; cancelled flights and award tickets earn nothing. [5]
- A missing credit must be claimed, with any proof United asks for, within 12 months of the date the miles were earned, although some partners set different claim periods. [5]
- Miles stay in the account until they are redeemed or otherwise forfeited under the programme rules. [5]
How do you earn MileagePlus miles on United flights?
For air travel, miles are credited only to individual members and only for flights actually flown by that member. [5] United does not award mileage credit for flight cancellations. [5] Credit applies only from the member's official enrolment date and only to that member's own account. [5]
Two things shape what a United flight credits: the fare paid and the member's status on the day of travel. Class-of-service bonus miles, where they apply, are credited according to the fare paid rather than the cabin flown, and no class-of-service bonus is credited on an upgrade. [5] Benefits tied to Premier status, including bonus miles, are based on the member's status at the time of travel, not at the time the ticket was bought, booked or reserved. [5]
The version of the rules published on united.com is the current authority and supersedes earlier or conflicting versions. [5]
Which tickets and fares do not earn MileagePlus miles?
Award travel is excluded: award miles are not credited for award tickets, including tickets bought with a combination of miles and money. [5] United also reserves the right to exclude certain fares and tickets from accrual, and lists special promotional accommodations, rentals, industry discounts, consolidation tickets, group rates and special promotional rates such as PassPlus among the tickets that may be excluded at its discretion. [5]
| Ticket or activity | Award miles |
|---|---|
| Flight cancelled by the airline | Not credited [5] |
| Award ticket, including a miles-plus-money ticket | Not credited [5] |
| Class-of-service bonus miles on an upgrade | Not credited [5] |
| Special promotional accommodations, rentals, industry discounts, consolidation tickets, group rates, special promotional rates such as PassPlus | May be excluded [5] |
| Partner route where accrual is prohibited by law or otherwise | May be refused [5] |
Fare also matters for status rather than for award miles: Basic Economy and other base fares earn Premier qualifying points (PQP) but not Premier qualifying flights (PQF) toward 2026 Premier status. [6] [7] The thresholds themselves are set out in the MileagePlus elite status guide.
How do partner airlines and credit cards earn MileagePlus miles?
United may, at its discretion, let individual members credit miles earned on other airlines to MileagePlus, and other airlines may by agreement let their own members credit flights on United to their programmes. [5] Unless United expressly provides otherwise, miles from such a flight may be credited to only one frequent flyer or loyalty programme. [5] United decides which airlines are eligible and can change that list at any time, with or without notice. [5] The MileagePlus partner airlines guide and the explanation of partner earning go further.
Beyond flying, miles may be earned for purchases made through authorised debit or credit cards, or through activity expressly allowed under the applicable offer. [5] Those offers are governed by the terms of the partner making them, and what is on offer can vary with the type of membership, Premier status level and other factors. [5] United also reserves the right to make bonus and promotional offers selectively available, based on flight activity, partner activity, location, status level or mileage balance. [5]
Bonus miles and miles earned from non-flight activity do not count toward Premier qualification unless an offer expressly says otherwise. [6] Under the terms of the 2026 Premier Status Match Challenge, PQP earned from purchases on an eligible United Chase card count toward the offer's PQP requirement, and only the primary cardmember's card PQP are applied to it. [6]
Businesses and other members that are not individuals have narrower options: they cannot accrue miles for traveller flight activity, hotel stays, car rentals or similar activity carried out by their owners, directors, officers, employees or contractors, except for purchases on the business's authorised debit or credit card or as an offer expressly allows. [5]
How do you claim missing MileagePlus miles?
Each member is responsible for making sure eligible credits reach the account. [5] Where a credit is missing, or where United decides verification is needed, United may ask for proof such as copies of tickets or receipts, and the claim and its proof must be received within 12 months after the date the miles were said to have been earned. [5] Certain partners operate valid retro-credit claim periods that differ from that 12-month window. [5]
The same 12-month limit runs the other way: a member who spots an erroneous or fraudulent mileage deduction must notify United within 12 months of the deduction, and United may ask for documentation while it reviews the claim. [5]
Exceptions and limits
- Nothing accrues before enrolment. Mileage can be accrued only after the member's official enrolment date. [5]
- One account per person. Duplicate accounts are subject to cancellation, and mileage held in two or more accounts generally cannot be combined. [5]
- Miles are not property. Accrued miles cannot be transferred or assigned except as United expressly permits; moving miles to another account goes through the Transfer Miles Program and its terms. [5] After a member's death or divorce, United may credit all or part of the balance to authorised people on satisfactory documentation and payment of applicable fees. [5]
- Forfeiture. Miles remain in the account until redeemed or forfeited — for example under the programme rules or fare rules, following prohibited conduct, under applicable law, at the member's request, on death, or if the member does not respond to repeated communications about the account. [5]
- The rules can change. United can change the rules, benefits and mileage levels at any time, with or without notice, and accumulated miles create no vested rights. [5]
- Prohibited conduct. Fraud, misrepresentation, or selling and bartering miles can lead to termination of membership and cancellation of accrued mileage and awards. [5]
Frequently asked questions
Do MileagePlus miles expire?
Accrued miles are kept in the account until they are redeemed or otherwise forfeited — for instance under the programme rules or fare rules, following prohibited conduct, under applicable law, when the member asks to close the account, on death, or when the member fails to respond to repeated communications about the account. [5]
Can I earn miles for a flight I did not take?
No. Air miles are credited only to individual members and only for flights actually flown by that member, and a cancelled flight earns neither miles nor Premier qualifying credits. [5]
Do award tickets earn MileagePlus miles?
No. Award miles are not credited for award travel, including tickets paid with a combination of miles and money. [5]
Can I credit the same flight to two programmes?
Not unless United expressly provides otherwise: miles from a flight on a partner airline may be credited to only one frequent flyer or loyalty programme. [5]
How long do I have to claim missing miles?
Claims and any supporting proof must reach United within 12 months after the date the miles were claimed to have been earned, though certain partners use different retro-credit periods. [5]
