How to earn Finnair Plus status
Finnair Plus is the frequent flyer programme of Finnair, and Finnair Plus status runs across five tiers: Basic, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Platinum Lumo. [2] Moving up depends on tier points collected inside a 12-month tracking period, with published thresholds of 15,000 tier points for Silver, 45,000 for Gold, 80,000 for Platinum and 300,000 for Platinum Lumo. [2]

Key takeaways
- Finnair Plus publishes five tiers — Basic, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Platinum Lumo — and the tier you hold depends on tier points collected during a 12-month tracking period. [2]
- The thresholds are 15,000 tier points for Silver, 45,000 for Gold, 80,000 for Platinum and 300,000 for Platinum Lumo, of which 250,000 must be collected from Finnair. [2]
- On Finnair flights, members collect Avios and an equal number of tier points per euro spent, at a rate of 6 to 10 depending on the tier held at the time of flying. [3]
- Silver and above receive a tier bonus on American Airlines, British Airways and Iberia coded flights, and Gold and above receive free Finnair Lounge access. [2] [3]
What are the Finnair Plus tiers and tier point thresholds?
Finnair Plus has five published tiers: Basic, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Platinum Lumo. [2] New members start as Basic and their one-year tracking period begins when they join. [2] Each tier also corresponds to a oneworld tier status, which is the level other oneworld airlines recognise when a member flies with them. [2]
| Tier | Tier points needed | oneworld equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | None published | — [2] |
| Silver | 15,000 | oneworld Ruby [2] |
| Gold | 45,000 | oneworld Sapphire [2] |
| Platinum | 80,000 | oneworld Emerald [2] |
| Platinum Lumo | 300,000, of which 250,000 from Finnair | oneworld Emerald [2] |
Tier points can be collected from Finnair flights and travel extras based on the money spent, from flights marketed or operated by a oneworld partner airline based on travel class, booking class and miles flown, and from purchases made with the Finnair Visa Credit card, which is available only in Finland and only counts purchases of at least €1,500 a month. [2]
How do you earn Avios and tier points on Finnair flights?
On Finnair flights numbered AY0001–AY2000 and AY7001–AY7500, Avios and tier points are calculated from how much money is spent rather than from distance flown. [3] The base fare is taken into account, excluding most taxes, fees and charges, along with a possible airline surcharge and the total price of travel extras. [3] The same spend-based method applies to Finnair codeshare flights numbered AY2501–AY7000. [3] The rate is set by the tier held when flying, and members collect an equal number of Avios and tier points. [3]
| Tier | Avios and tier points per €1 |
|---|---|
| Basic | 6 Avios and 6 tier points [3] |
| Silver | 7 Avios and 7 tier points [3] |
| Gold | 8 Avios and 8 tier points [3] |
| Platinum | 9 Avios and 9 tier points [3] |
| Platinum Lumo | 10 Avios and 10 tier points [3] |
Flights booked before 3 June 2025 are treated differently: Avios and tier points are based on the ticket type or booking class and the distance flown. [3] On oneworld partner airlines, earning depends on travel class, booking class and distance flown, and a booking class that is not listed earns neither Avios nor tier points. [3]
Silver, Gold, Platinum and Platinum Lumo members receive a tier bonus on American Airlines, British Airways and Iberia flights carrying an AA, BA or IB code: +10% at Silver, +15% at Gold and +25% at Platinum and Platinum Lumo. [2] [3] Japan Airlines coded flights carry a larger bonus of +25% at Silver, +50% at Gold and +100% at Platinum and Platinum Lumo, and the Japan Airlines tier point bonus applies to flights taken on or after 1 May 2026. [3] Flights with partner airlines outside oneworld collect Avios but not tier points. [3] Finnair also allows Avios to be claimed for flights taken up to six months before joining. [4]
How does the 12-month tracking period work?
A tracking period always lasts 12 months, after which tier points reset to zero and a new tracking period begins. [2] When a new tier is reached, that tier membership continues for the rest of the previous tracking period plus the next 12 months. [2]
Milestone rewards sit inside each tier and can only be reached in the member's own tier; they are added to the account automatically at 12,000 tier points at Basic for 3,000 Avios, 20,000 at Silver for two lounge passes, 55,000 at Gold for two upgrade benefits and 95,000 at Platinum for four upgrade benefits, and at Platinum Lumo at 310,000 for eight upgrade benefits and at 320,000 for four more. [2]
Longer-term status is tracked separately: Finnair Plus Lifetime Gold is reached with 2,000,000 lifetime tier points and Lifetime Platinum with 3,300,000, the lifetime balance is made up of all tier points earned during membership, and a lifetime tier is never downgraded. [2] The Avios collected along the way are the currency used to book Finnair Plus award flights and to upgrade a travel class with Avios.
What benefits does each Finnair Plus tier include?
Finnair publishes a benefit set for every tier, and these benefits apply on Finnair flights with an AY code on the ticket that are operated by Finnair or Norra. [2]
| Tier | Headline benefits |
|---|---|
| Basic | Avios and tier points, member offers and rewards [2] |
| Silver | Free internet throughout the flight, priority services at the airport, 50% off the first checked bag and a discount on Finnair Lounge access [2] |
| Gold | Free Finnair Lounge access, free seat selection and four one-way upgrade benefits [2] |
| Platinum | Free access to the Finnair Platinum Wing and Finnair Platinum Corner, free sports equipment and 12 one-way upgrade benefits [2] |
| Platinum Lumo | Finnair Lounge access for up to four guests, eight confirmed travel class upgrades and exclusive customer service [2] |
Status also travels: Silver corresponds to oneworld Ruby, Gold to oneworld Sapphire, and both Platinum and Platinum Lumo to oneworld Emerald. [2] Lounge access at Helsinki is set out in more detail on the Finnair Lounge page.
Exceptions and limits
- Finnair Plus tier benefits apply only on Finnair flights with an AY code operated by Finnair or Norra; when flying with a oneworld airline, or on a Finnair flight where the marketing carrier on the ticket is not AY, oneworld benefits apply instead. [2]
- Spend-based earning excludes most taxes, fees and other airport and service charges, and no Avios or tier points are collected from on-board purchases, award flights or travel extras bought in connection with an award flight. [2] [3]
- Only a member's own flights earn; paying for other travellers' tickets does not add their spending to the total, and spend in another currency is converted into euros before Avios and tier points are calculated. [3]
- Tier points from the Finnair Visa Credit card are available only in Finland and only on purchases of at least €1,500 a month. [2]
- Junior membership is open to children aged 2 to 17, is free and must be set up by a guardian; Avios do not expire during Junior membership, Avios cannot be transferred into a Junior account and that account cannot be linked to a British Airways Club account, and the membership changes to a standard Finnair Plus membership when the member turns 18. [2]
- Flights with partner airlines outside oneworld collect Avios but not tier points, so they cannot move a member towards a higher Finnair Plus tier. [3]

Do Finnair Plus tier points expire?
A tracking period lasts 12 months, and at the end of it tier points reset to zero and a new tracking period begins. [2]
How long does a new Finnair Plus tier last?

No, Finnair does not award Avios or tier points for award flights or for travel extras bought in connection with an award flight. [3]
