How to Book Finnair Plus Awards

Finnair Plus awards are flights booked with Avios, the currency of Finnair's Finnair Plus programme, which Finnair describes as usable for award flights with Finnair and with oneworld partner airlines. [2] This guide covers awards on Finnair itself; Finnair lists partner awards on a separate page, so oneworld and other partner redemptions sit outside the scope described here. [2]

Facts checked: 18 October 2026

Key takeaways

  • Avios held in a Finnair Plus account can be spent on award flights with Finnair and with oneworld partner airlines. [2]
  • Avios are earned from money spent on Finnair flights and travel extras, at 6 Avios per €1 for Basic members and 10 per €1 for Platinum Lumo, with an equal number of tier points. [2] [4]
  • An award flight does not itself earn Avios or tier points, and neither do travel extras bought in connection with an award flight. [3] [4]

Earning the Avios first

Finnair Plus members collect two things: Avios, which Finnair says work like a currency that can be spent on an extra bag or an award flight, and tier points, which move a member up the tiers and unlock benefits such as priority services and lounge access. [4] Someone joining the programme starts as a Basic member, and a 12-month tracking period begins at that point. [2] [3]

Avios come from Finnair flights and travel extras such as seats and baggage, from oneworld and other partner airline flights, from Finnair Plus partners including hotels and car rental, and from a Finnair Visa credit card that the programme says is available only in Finland. [2] [4] On Finnair flights the amount depends on money spent rather than distance flown: Basic members collect 6 Avios per €1, Silver 7, Gold 8, Platinum 9 and Platinum Lumo 10, alongside the same number of tier points. [4] The spend counted is the base fare, excluding most taxes, fees and charges, plus any airline surcharge and the total price of travel extras. [4] A member collects from their own flights only, even where one person pays for the whole party, and the credit appears after the flight, dated by travel rather than purchase. [4] Finnair also lets a new member claim Avios for flights taken up to six months before joining. [2]

Two rules matter when sizing up an award. Award flights earn nothing, and neither do travel extras bought in connection with them. [4] And the Avios have to still be there: Finnair's membership benefits table lists "Avios don't expire during your tracking period", but the page checked does not indicate which tiers receive that benefit. [3] Junior members are treated separately, with Avios that do not expire during the Junior membership. [3]

Searching and booking an award

Finnair's Finnair Plus menu separates "Use Avios on Finnair award flights" from "Use Avios on award flights with partners", and the programme page summarises award use as Avios flying a member around the world on flights booked with Finnair or its oneworld partners. [2]

A sensible way to read a route is to work through the search step by step and to keep a record of what the booking flow shows, since the programme documentation does not describe that flow. [2] Background on the general process is set out in the award search workflow, and the vocabulary in the glossary entry on award availability.

Pricing, taxes and ticketing

The same is true of change and cancellation terms for awards. [2] [3] [4] No figure is quoted here for any of them, because quoting one would go beyond the sources.

One money rule that is published sits on the earning side rather than the spending side. Avios and tier points are calculated on spend that excludes taxes, fees and other airport and service charges, and they are not awarded for purchases made on board a flight or in connection with an award flight. [3] [4] That rule explains what a paid trip returns; it says nothing about what an award costs, so the two should not be read together as a price list. [3] [4]

Where a tax line or a ticketing deadline matters to a decision, the practical check is the booking flow itself rather than the programme pages, since the pages listed below do not carry those figures. [2]

Exceptions and limits

  • Scope. This page covers awards on Finnair. Finnair lists partner awards as a separate topic, so oneworld and other partner redemptions follow that material rather than anything described here. [2]
  • Which benefits apply on the trip. Finnair's tier benefits apply on Finnair flights where the ticket carries an AY code and the flight is operated by Finnair or Norra; when flying a oneworld airline, or on a Finnair flight whose marketing carrier is not AY, oneworld benefits apply instead. [3]
  • Junior accounts. Junior membership is for children aged 2 to 17, is free and needs a guardian to sign up; Avios cannot be transferred into a Junior account, the account cannot be linked to a British Airways Club account, and it becomes a standard membership at 18. [3] Avios already in the account stay valid for another 18 months after the Junior membership ends, or longer if the member uses or collects Avios before expiry. [3]
  • Market. The rules quoted here come from the international English pages of finnair.com, which also offers country and currency variants including Finland (EUR), the United States (USD) and the United Kingdom (GBP); those regional versions are not covered by this page. [2]
  • Left open.
