How to understand SAS EuroBonus status levels, qualification and benefits

SAS EuroBonus status is the membership level a traveller holds in EuroBonus, the loyalty programme run by SAS EuroBonus AB for Scandinavian Airlines (SAS). EuroBonus counts Level points and qualifying flights toward moving up to a higher level or renewing the current one, while Bonus points can be spent on award trips but do not count toward an upgrade. [3]

Key takeaways

  • EuroBonus keeps spendable points and status-earning activity apart: Level points count toward a higher membership level or a renewal but cannot be used for award trips, while Bonus points can be spent but do not count toward upgrading. [3]
  • SAS names Silver, Gold and Diamond levels when it explains extra Bonus points on partner flights: 25% for Silver, 50% for Gold and 75% for Diamond, applied to Bonus points only. [5]
  • The level and benefits that apply to a flight are the ones held on the day of travel, not the day of booking. [3]
  • Award trips earn neither EuroBonus points nor qualifying flights, so flying on points never moves a member toward a higher level. [3] [6]

What are the SAS EuroBonus membership levels?

EuroBonus is described as a programme with different membership levels, and SAS says the benefits a member receives may differ according to the level held. [3] Those benefits are personal: service benefits linked to a membership level apply only to the member unless SAS states otherwise, and ordinary booking rules for tickets apply to all members regardless of level. [3]

SAS names three levels when it sets out how much extra a member earns on partner flights. [5]

Membership levelExtra Bonus points earned
Silver25%
Gold50%
Diamond75%

The booster applies to Bonus points only, because the Level points formula on the same page has no booster term. [5]

Which level applies to a given flight is fixed by the date of the activity: the rules and benefits of the level held at the time of the activity apply, so a member who is upgraded or downgraded between reservation and departure is treated according to the level held on departure. [3]

Which activity counts toward SAS EuroBonus status?

The EuroBonus member terms, effective 1 September 2024, divide what a member collects into three categories. [3]

Level pointsYesNo
Bonus pointsNoYes
Qualifying flightsYesNot applicable

Qualifying flights are flights operated by SAS or selected flights operated by other airlines as set out on SAS's website. [3] On partner flights, Level points are calculated as distance in miles multiplied by the sum of the distance multiplier and the booking class multiplier, before any level booster is added to Bonus points. [5]

Booking class drives the result. EuroBonus points are earned according to the booking class originally booked and paid for, regardless of later upgrades or downgrades, unless SAS states otherwise, and discounted tickets such as industry discount, agent discount, award trip, standby and charter tickets do not entitle a member to earn points or reach a higher level. [3] On the Aerolíneas Argentinas partner page, an unlisted booking class earns nothing at all. [5]

Missing activity can be claimed only within limits: travel and activities older than six months cannot be registered retroactively online, and a new member can register SAS flights taken up to 30 days before the membership began. [3]

How do SkyTeam partners count toward EuroBonus status?

SAS treats Aerolíneas Argentinas as a SkyTeam partner, and EuroBonus members earn both Bonus points and Level points on eligible Aerolíneas Argentinas-marketed flights, with the number depending on travel class, booking class and distance flown. [5] The same page warns that EuroBonus points are not earned on SkyTeam-marketed flights operated by airlines outside the SkyTeam alliance. [5]

Code-share bookings follow the alliance of the partner involved: where a flight is marketed by SAS or a EuroBonus partner airline but operated by another carrier, a SkyTeam partner's marketing airline decides whether and how many points are earned, while a non-SkyTeam partner's operating airline decides instead. [3] Points cannot be earned at all on flights operated by an airline that does not participate in EuroBonus. [3]

SkyTeam also affects spending rather than earning: SAS allows a booking to mix SAS and other SkyTeam airlines. [4] Earning details for individual partners are set out on the SkyTeam partner earning page.

Exceptions and limits

  • Award travel. Members do not earn EuroBonus points or qualifying flights on award trips [6], and award trip tickets are among the tickets that do not entitle a member to earn points or reach a higher level. [3]
  • Inactivity. If a member earns no points for 24 months, SAS may terminate the membership, provided the account holds no valid, usable points. [3]
  • Misuse and corrections. SAS reserves the right to downgrade a membership level or withdraw points where it considers there has been misuse [3], and a correction of wrongly registered points after a technical error can also affect the membership level and its benefits. [3]
  • Point validity. Points stay valid for an additional four years after the qualification period in which they were earned, and then become void. [3]
  • Turning 18. At 18 a member chooses whether to continue the membership and keep previously earned points and membership level, or to end it. [3]
  • Separate terms. Individual products and services offered inside EuroBonus may carry their own terms, and those separate terms prevail if they conflict with the main member terms. [3] SAS also reserves the right to change the terms, with new rules, charts and levels applying from the date set. [3]

Frequently asked questions

Do award flights count toward SAS EuroBonus status?

No. EuroBonus points and qualifying flights are not earned on award trips [6], and award trip tickets do not entitle a member to earn points or reach a higher level. [3]

Which points can I spend, and which ones build status?

Level points count toward a higher level or a renewal but cannot be used for award trips, while Bonus points can be used for award trips and other products but do not count toward upgrading. [3]

Does the level I had at booking or at departure apply?

The level held at the time of the activity applies, so a member upgraded or downgraded between reservation and departure is treated according to the level held on the departure date. [3]

Can a missing partner flight still earn Level points later?

Only within the retroactive limits: online registration is limited to travel and activities from the past six months, and new members can register SAS flights taken up to 30 days before joining. [3] An unlisted booking class earns no points on the partner page shown above. [5]
