How to verify a transfer bonus before transferring

Transfer bonus verification is the set of checks a cardholder completes before moving credit-card rewards into an airline or hotel loyalty programme during a bonus promotion. At American Express, all Membership Rewards point transfers are final and cannot be reversed, so the checking has to be finished before the transfer is submitted. [6]

Key takeaways

  • Membership Rewards points transfers are final and cannot be reversed, so an ineligible or mistaken transfer cannot be unwound afterwards. [6]
  • The name on the card and the name on the airline or hotel account must match for the accounts to be linked and for the transfer to succeed. [6]
  • A partner account held by an Additional Card Member can only be linked if that Additional Card was issued at least 90 days before the link. [6]
  • Once the points land in the partner account they are governed by that programme's terms and conditions, not the card programme's. [6]

What should you check before a transfer bonus?

Work through the transfer conditions first, then read the offer text for the specific card and the specific partner account. The transfer route has to exist before a bonus on that route matters. [6]

  • The programme pairing. Membership Rewards points can be transferred to participating frequent flyer or hotel loyalty programmes, so confirm that the airline or hotel programme you want is one that the card programme transfers to. [6]
  • The account link. The Rewards Account must be linked to the partner frequent flyer or hotel account before any transfer can be made. [6]
  • The name on both sides. The name on the card and the name on the selected partner loyalty account must be identical for the link to work. [6]
  • Who holds the partner account. The account receiving the points must be held by you or by an Additional Card Member linked to your Rewards Account, and that Additional Card must have been issued at least 90 days before linking. [6]
  • The award you intend to book. Check availability and how many points are needed before completing the transfer, because the transfer itself is final. [6]
  • The offer text itself. Note the bonus rate, the eligible card, the partner account type, any minimum transfer, the rounding rule and the stated posting date exactly as the offer words them, and keep the wording with the date you read it.

After the transfer is submitted, check the partner account to confirm the points have arrived, then redeem them directly with the airline or hotel. [6] Our points transfer checklist covers the mechanics of the transfer itself.

Whose name has to be on the partner account?

For Membership Rewards in the United States, the name on the card and the name on the partner loyalty account must be the same, and the card programme states this as the condition for the two accounts to be linked and for the transfer to be successful. [6] A mismatch at this step blocks the transfer before any bonus question arises.

There is one permitted second holder. The partner account can belong to you or to an Additional Card Member linked to your Rewards Account. [6] Where an Additional Card Member's own airline or hotel account is used, the Additional Card must have been issued to that person at least 90 days before the Rewards Account is linked to their partner account. [6]

Once points have moved into a partner account they are subject to the terms and conditions of that partner loyalty programme. [6]

Can a points transfer be reversed?

No. All Membership Rewards points transfers are final and cannot be reversed. [6] That single rule is the reason the checks come first: there is no cancellation step afterwards, and the card programme's own guidance is to check availability and the number of points required before completing a transfer that is being made to book a flight or a hotel room. [6]

Confirmation works from the partner side. The cardholder is told to check the frequent flyer or hotel loyalty account to confirm the points have transferred, and then to redeem those partner points directly with the airline or hotel. [6] If what lands in the account does not match the offer you relied on, see transfer bonus posting and missing bonus claims.

What limits can a partner programme put on miles?

Because transferred points become partner points, the receiving programme's rules decide how those miles can be used. [6] Vietnam Airlines' Lotusmiles programme shows how specific those partner-side rules can be: it publishes separate procedures for restoring miles that have already expired and for extending miles that are about to expire, and both sets of miles carry stated limits on validity, tier value and refunds. Exceptions and limits

  • A final transfer stays final. Since Membership Rewards transfers cannot be reversed, award space that disappears after the transfer does not create a route back to the card programme. [6]
  • The 90-day condition is specific. It is stated for partner accounts held by an Additional Card Member, counting from the issue date of that Additional Card to the date the Rewards Account is linked to their partner account. [6]
  • Bonus conditions sit with the offer. These checks confirm that a transfer can be made between the card account and the partner account; whether a particular transfer earns a bonus is decided by the offer wording for that card and that partner account.
  • Coverage. The transfer conditions here are the American Express Membership Rewards rules for the United States, and the partner-side example is Vietnam Airlines Lotusmiles. [6] [7] [8]

Frequently asked questions

Can I cancel a Membership Rewards transfer after it is made?

No. All points transfers are final and cannot be reversed. [6]

Does the airline or hotel account have to be in my own name?

The name on the card and the name on the partner loyalty account must be the same for the accounts to link and the transfer to succeed. [6] A partner account held by an Additional Card Member linked to your Rewards Account can also be used, provided that Additional Card was issued at least 90 days before linking. [6]

How do I confirm the points actually arrived?

Check the frequent flyer or hotel loyalty account to confirm the transfer, then redeem the partner points directly with the airline or hotel. [6]

Which terms apply once the points are in the airline account?

The partner's. Once points are transferred to a partner programme account, they are subject to that partner loyalty programme's terms and conditions. [6]

Can expired Lotusmiles award miles be brought back?

Lotusmiles members can restore expired award miles within 6 months of the expiry date; the restored miles are valid for 6 months from the successful transaction, carry no tier value and are not refundable. [7]
