How to change or cancel Virgin Atlantic award flights
Virgin Atlantic Flying Club award tickets can be changed before travel — travel date, route or class of service — for a fixed amendment fee, and cancelled for a fee that returns all Virgin Points when the cancellation is made outside 24 hours of the outbound flight. [3] For international flights originating in the UK the fee is £30, for international flights originating in the US it is US$50, and for flights originating in any other region it is the local-currency equivalent of US$50. Key takeaways
- Virgin Atlantic Flying Club reward tickets on Virgin Atlantic-operated flights can be amended before travel for £30 (international flights starting in the UK), US$50 (international flights starting in the US) or the local-currency equivalent of US$50 (flights starting anywhere else). [3]
- A member who cancels a reward flight outside 24 hours of the outbound flight gets 100% of the Virgin Points back, and a cancellation fee in the same amounts applies. [3]
- Once a reward ticket has been issued, no name changes are allowed. [3]
- Gold members travelling on a Virgin Atlantic reward flight or a Companion Reward booking, or travelling on points redeemed from a Gold member's account, have the date change fee waived for every passenger on the same booking reference. [3]
What do Virgin Atlantic award changes and cancellations cost?
The amounts below are the Flying Club rules for reward tickets on Virgin Atlantic-operated flights, under the edition of the terms that applies to bookings made from 30 October 2024; earlier bookings sit under the previous edition of the same terms. [3] [4]
| Action | Flight origin | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| Change of travel date, route or class of service before travel | International flight originating in the UK | £30 |
| Change of travel date, route or class of service before travel | International flight originating in the US | US$50 |
| Change of travel date, route or class of service before travel | Flight originating in any other region | Local-currency equivalent of US$50 |
| Cancellation outside 24 hours of the outbound flight, with 100% of Virgin Points re-credited | Flight originating in the UK | £30 |
| Cancellation outside 24 hours of the outbound flight, with 100% of Virgin Points re-credited | Flight originating in the US | US$50 |
| Cancellation outside 24 hours of the outbound flight, with 100% of Virgin Points re-credited | Flight originating in any other region | Local-currency equivalent of US$50 |
The charge follows where the flight starts, not where the member lives, so the same award moved from a UK departure to a US departure is priced from a different column. [3] Reward flights do not include passenger taxes, fees, charges and surcharges, which are payable for each passenger and are subject to change. [3]
How do you change or cancel a Flying Club award?
Both the member and any Authorised Account User can make changes to a reward booking, and where their instructions conflict the member's wishes prevail. [3] An Authorised Account User must be at least 18 years old and can book and redeem Virgin Points from the member's account without further confirmation. [3]
When a member cancels a reward flight outside 24 hours of the outbound flight, 100% of the Virgin Points are re-credited to the member's account and the cancellation fee is charged. [3] Upgrade Rewards carry the same change and cancellation conditions as other Flying Club reward bookings. [3] Upgrade, Companion and Chauffeur Driven Car Service Rewards are arranged by phoning the Virgin Atlantic Customer Centre rather than online. [3]
A Companion Reward travels with the paying passenger: if the person on the paying ticket changes their flight or class of travel, the Companion Reward can be amended for the same amendment fees, subject to seat availability and the rules for upgrade and companion rewards. [3] Upgrade and Companion Rewards cannot be applied to bookings made in the Economy Light product. [3]
Do Gold members pay the fee to change an award?
Not for a date change. When a Gold member is travelling on a Virgin Atlantic reward flight or a Companion Reward booking, or when the Virgin Points were redeemed from a Gold member's account, the date change fee is waived for the Gold member and all passengers listed on the same booking reference. [3] Flying Club tiers run from Red through Silver to Gold, with progressively higher earning rates at each tier. [5]
The waiver covers date changes only and does not extend to Points Plus Money bookings, normal revenue bookings or upgraded bookings paid for with Virgin Points, where normal fare rules apply. [3]
Exceptions and limits
- Timing. The full re-credit of Virgin Points is tied to cancellations made outside 24 hours of the outbound flight. [3]
- Availability. All Flying Club rewards are subject to availability and blackout dates may apply with Virgin Atlantic and with other participating companies; in some cases at least 14 days' notice may be needed to book a participating company's reward. [3] Virgin Atlantic publishes a reward seat checker on its website for looking at availability. [6]
- Reward Seat Sale bookings. Moving an award travel date to a date after a Reward Seat Sale ends means the standard redemption rate applies instead of the sale rate, and normal change fees apply. [3] Changing an existing booking so that it falls inside a sale period does not refund any difference in Virgin Points. [3]
- Points Plus Money. These bookings follow the published fare rules for changes and refunds, and the Virgin Points used for the discount are not refunded, except where Virgin Atlantic's flight programme or operations are altered, suspended, cut back or cancelled. [3] Any extra fare, change fees, taxes or charges due after a change cannot be paid with Virgin Points. [3]
- Disruption. If Virgin Atlantic alters, suspends, cuts back or cancels its flight programme, points for reward flights booked but not honoured are reinstated, and a member moved to another airline in a lower class may claim the point difference by sending the boarding pass to the Customer Centre. [3]
- Lost documents. A lost, stolen or destroyed reward confirmation document is not replaced, and the points are not re-credited. [3]
- Partner rewards. Rewards offered by other Reward Providers are published by that provider and are subject to that provider's own terms alongside the Flying Club terms. [3]
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to change a Virgin Atlantic reward flight?
£30 for an international flight originating in the UK, US$50 for one originating in the US, or the local-currency equivalent of US$50 for flights originating elsewhere, covering a change of travel date, route or class of service made before travel. [3]
Do I get my Virgin Points back if I cancel an award ticket?
Yes — when a member cancels a reward flight outside 24 hours of the outbound flight, 100% of the Virgin Points are re-credited, and a cancellation fee in the same amounts applies. [3]
Can I change the passenger name on a Flying Club award?
No. Once reward tickets have been issued, no name changes are allowed. [3]
Is the award change fee waived for Gold members?
The date change fee is waived for a Gold member travelling on a Virgin Atlantic reward flight or a Companion Reward booking, or travelling on points from a Gold member's account, and for everyone on the same booking reference; Points Plus Money, revenue and points-upgraded bookings are excluded. [3]
Do the same fees apply to partner airline awards?
Rewards supplied by other Reward Providers are published by that provider and are subject to that provider's own terms, and booking some participating company rewards may require at least 14 days' notice. [3]
