FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY
What is booking-platform rewards redemption for hotels?
Booking-platform rewards redemption for hotels is the use of a travel booking site's own loyalty balance — credits, vouchers or a cash-like wallet balance rather than airline miles or hotel points — to offset part or all of the price of a hotel stay booked through that site. Because the balance belongs to the booking platform rather than to the property, what it can be spent on is governed by the platform's own terms. On Booking.com, for example, Travel Credits, Cash Credits and vouchers sit in a Wallet created automatically with a verified account, and they can be put towards eligible bookings that accept Wallet payments. Key takeaways
- A booking-platform reward is a balance held by the travel site, not by an airline or hotel: on Booking.com, Credits and vouchers live in a Wallet attached to a verified account, and only Credits and vouchers are awarded into it. [7]
- Each reward can carry its own conditions — expiry dates, app-only use, specific properties, a minimum spend or a maximum value — so two rewards from the same site can behave differently. [7]
- Only one voucher can be spent on any single booking, and the value of several vouchers cannot be combined. [7]
- Genius is Booking.com's discounted-rate scheme: the Genius rate is a discounted rate offered by participating Service Providers or funded by Booking.com, and the discounts are applied automatically without codes. [6] [7]
How do booking-platform rewards wallets work?
Travel sites run their own loyalty schemes alongside airline and hotel programmes. Booking.com's customer terms separate two things: section A13 sets out the Genius rate, and section A14 sets out Rewards, Credits & Wallet. [7] The rules described below are Booking.com's own, published in its Customer terms of service updated 25 August 2025. [7]
Under the Rewards & Wallet terms, Booking.com may issue Rewards at its sole discretion, subject to those terms and to any Individual Reward Criteria that apply. [7] Two things can be awarded into a Wallet: Credits and vouchers, although the Wallet may also track other reward types such as credit card cashback. [7] Credits come in two forms — Travel Credits, which can be spent across different bookings, and Cash Credits, which can be spent like Travel Credits or transferred to a credit or debit card of certain brands. [7]
The Wallet is created automatically when a member opens a verified account, and the member has to be signed in to reach it. [7] To receive any type of Reward, a member must, at the time of qualifying and at the time of spending, hold a verified account, be at least 18 years old, meet the Individual Reward Criteria, stay within the Rewards & Wallet terms, and hold a valid credit card where credit card cashback is involved. [7]
How do you apply rewards to a hotel booking?
Any amount of Travel Credits and/or Cash Credits can be spent to offset the cost of an eligible booking on participating platforms such as booking.com or a group company website. [7] Where a Wallet payment is involved — for example when a member chooses to pay later for an accommodation booking — the Wallet is charged for the selected Rewards at booking confirmation, so those Rewards are spent immediately, while the rest of the price is charged under the booking's own payment policy. [7]
If the booking costs less than the balance held, the unspent Rewards stay in the Wallet until they expire, unless the individual reward's terms say otherwise. [7] If it costs more, the member pays the difference with another payment method, and failing to pay in time can lead to the booking being cancelled with the Rewards returned to the Wallet under their original terms, including expiry dates. [7]
Credits and vouchers can be used together on the same eligible booking. [7] Where a member holds several Rewards of a single type, the one with the earliest expiry date is selected by default at payment confirmation: later-expiring Credits cannot be chosen first, but the member is free to choose which voucher to spend first. [7]
What minimums and property restrictions apply?
Every reward can carry its own Individual Reward Criteria. Booking.com lists the kinds of conditions those criteria may contain: time-sensitive restrictions such as offers with expiry dates, platform restrictions such as promotional codes usable only in its app, accommodation service restrictions such as offers usable only with specific Service Providers, a minimum spend, and a maximum reward value for both monetary and non-monetary rewards. [7]
All Rewards can only be spent on Travel Experiences that accept Wallet payments. [7] Travel Credits can be spread across different bookings, whereas a voucher can only be spent on the specific bookings named in that voucher's terms. [7] Only one voucher may be spent on each booking, and the value of multiple vouchers cannot be combined for a single booking. [7] Rewards cannot be sold, encumbered or transferred to a third party, and on an account holder's death the account is closed and any pending or available Wallet Rewards are cancelled. [7]
How do Genius discounts work on hotel bookings?
Booking.com describes Genius as its free loyalty programme, with three levels, and says discounts at participating properties run from 10% at Level 1 to 10–20% at Level 3, applied to the price before taxes and fees. [6] As of 18 October 2026, the levels and headline discounts are:
| Genius level | How it is unlocked | Stay discount | Car rental discount |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | Create a free Booking.com account | 10% | 10% |
| Level 2 | 5 completed bookings within 2 years | 10–15% | 10–15% |
| Level 3 | 15 completed bookings within 2 years | 10–20% | 10–15% |
Genius discounts and rewards are applied automatically to eligible stays and rental cars, with no codes needed, and participating options are marked with a blue Genius label. [6] Car rental discounts apply to the cost of the car only. [6] A higher level does not always mean a bigger discount, because discount percentages can vary by property and some properties may offer the same discount at every level. [6] In many cases the Genius discount can be combined with other applicable discounts, offers and deals, with eligibility criteria presented before booking. [6] Once a level is unlocked, Booking.com does not demote members to a lower level. [6]
Exceptions and limits
- Cancelling a reward-paid stay. If a Travel Experience paid in part or in full with Rewards is cancelled, the Service Provider's cancellation policy decides whether money and/or Rewards are refunded, and Booking.com's customer service team can refund any Rewards the member is entitled to. [7] Cancellation fees are set by the property and listed in the booking's cancellation policy. [8]
- Rewards tied to a cancelled booking. Where a Reward was issued because of a particular Travel Experience, any unspent Rewards associated with it are deleted from the Wallet when that Travel Experience is cancelled. [7]
- Missing rewards. A member who did not receive a Reward must contact customer service no more than 12 months after the qualifying action; after that they are automatically ineligible and cannot claim it. [7]
- Lost or expired rewards. Lost, stolen or expired Rewards are not replaced, and the validity of Credits appears in the Wallet's Rewards & Wallet activity. [7]
- Wallet currency. A Wallet's default currency is set by the member's location, residency or another currency Booking.com chooses, and Rewards issued in a different currency are converted into it. [7]
- Wallet closure. If Booking.com stops providing the Wallet service, Rewards that have not expired remain valid for a further 12 months. [7]
- Fraud and misuse. Booking.com may cancel Rewards obtained by fraud or misuse, and under the Genius terms investigations into fraud, misuse or abuse may result in a membership being cancelled and earned rewards lost. [7]
- Genius exclusions. Cruises, insurance, public transportation and free options are excluded from Genius, and extra purchases such as room upgrades for stays, car seats for rental cars and additional luggage for flights do not receive Genius discounts. [6] [7]
Frequently asked questions
Can you pay for a whole hotel booking with booking-platform rewards?
Only up to the balance held: if the booking costs more than the Rewards available, the member pays the remaining amount with a different payment method, and failing to pay in time can lead to the booking being cancelled. [7]
Can two vouchers be combined on one Booking.com booking?
No — only one voucher can be spent on each booking, and the value of several vouchers cannot be combined for a single booking. [7] Credits and vouchers can, however, be used together on the same eligible booking. [7]
Do Booking.com Wallet credits expire?
Each reward carries its own terms, and unspent Rewards remain in the Wallet until expiration unless the reward's terms say otherwise. [7] Expired Rewards are not replaced. [7]
Is the Genius discount claimed from a Wallet balance?
Genius is a discounted rate offered by participating Service Providers or funded by Booking.com, and it is applied automatically to eligible stays and rental cars with no codes needed. [6] [7] Credits and vouchers are handled separately under the Rewards & Wallet terms, from a Wallet created with a verified account. [7]
Does the Genius discount apply at every property?
It applies at participating properties and on select rental car options, which are marked with a blue Genius label, and discount percentages can vary by property. [6]
