FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY

What is a brand exception?

A brand exception is a carve-out inside a hotel loyalty programme's own rules that lets a named brand, a single property or a region deliver a published benefit differently from the general description, or not at all. [1] [2] Marriott Bonvoy's program rules say that specific benefits, amenities, offers, awards and services may not be available at properties that participate in a limited or unique capacity, even where the property is not explicitly named as excluded where the benefit is described. [1] Hilton Honors states that benefits and services offered by Participating Hotels may vary, and that not all amenities are provided by all Participating Hotels. [2]

Key takeaways

  • A brand exception is written into the programme's own rules, so a benefit described in general terms can be narrower at a named brand, property or region. [1] [2]
  • Hilton Honors publishes brand-level lists of where complimentary upgrades are not offered, and names specific resorts where upgrades and its 48-hour reservations guarantee do not apply. [2]
  • Redemption and earning rules can differ from property to property: Wyndham Rewards says redemption requirements vary by property and can be as high as 30,000 points per bedroom. [3]
  • Exceptions are not fixed: programmes may add, remove or modify participating brands and properties, so the current terms control. [1] [2]

Why programmes write brand exceptions

Marriott defines its participating properties and brands as those that support earning, redemption, recognition and benefit delivery subject to the program rules, applicable Supplemental Terms and property- or brand-specific limitations. [1] Its program rules incorporate additional terms for experiences and properties that participate in a limited or unique capacity, and it points members to a separate Supplemental Terms page for those properties. [1] Where specific terms are stated for a brand or property, those terms control over the general participating-brands list. [1]

Hilton takes a different drafting route: its terms state that specific program benefits and services have been established for all members, but that benefits and services offered by Participating Hotels may vary. [2] It adds that amenities are offered at the discretion of Hilton Honors and the Participating Hotels, and that when a resort fee is required as part of a booking, the member should check with the hotel about the amenities that fee includes. [2]

Wyndham Rewards puts the check at property level rather than brand level: it tells members to check with the property to see whether stays qualify for earning points, and states that stays which earn points cannot be booked on a third-party website. [3]

Breakfast, upgrades and lounges

Food and beverage benefits are a common place to find a brand exception. Hilton's MyWay on-property choice includes complimentary continental breakfast or a daily food and beverage credit, which varies by brand and region. [2] Complimentary bottled water is not provided at Participating Hotels whose resort fee already includes bottled water, and WiFi may not be complimentary in meeting spaces or at properties with a resort fee. [2] At Marriott, the breakfast option associated with the Elite Welcome Gift benefit is not available at Atlantis, Paradise Island in the Bahamas, a non-branded participating property with limited participation. [1]

Upgrades carry an explicit brand carve-out at Hilton: Embassy Suites, Hilton Garden Inn, Hampton by Hilton, LivSmart Studios by Hilton, Tru by Hilton, Spark by Hilton, Homewood Suites by Hilton, Home2 Suites by Hilton, Hilton Grand Vacations and Motto by Hilton do not offer complimentary upgrades, and upgrades are also not offered at named properties such as Napua Tower at Grand Wailea, the Imperial Floor at Rome Cavalieri, Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi, Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort & Spa, and certain Partner Accommodations. [2]

Lounge access has its own definitions: Hilton's Diamond lounge benefit covers the member and up to one additional registered guest but excludes executive suites, villas, specialty accommodations, floors and towers, and "Club" accommodation types such as the Sakura Club at Conrad Washington, DC, Club Signia at Signia by Hilton hotels, the Citrus Club at the Arizona Biltmore and Enclave and Club category rooms at All-Inclusive resorts, unless the initial booking was also an Enclave-level room. [2] See lounge guest policy and breakfast benefit.

Earning, guarantees and redemption

Base earning at Marriott Bonvoy is ten points per U.S. dollar at most brands, but five points per dollar at Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy, City Express, Element, Four Points Flex, Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy, Marriott Executive Apartments, Protea Hotels, Residence Inn and TownePlace Suites. [1] At Marriott Executive Apartments, members earn points only on qualifying rates and not on qualifying charges. [1] Series by Marriott locations earn ten points per dollar in the United States, Canada and Greater China and five points per dollar elsewhere, while StudioRes earns four points per dollar. [1] Elite bonus points are available at all participating brands except as otherwise noted in the limited-participation section. [1]

Guarantees are equally property-specific. Hilton's 48-hour reservations guarantee does not apply at Conrad Maldives Resort & Spa, Hilton Seychelles Northolme Resort and Spa, Ho'olei at Grand Wailea, Kingston Plantation Condos, Royale Palms, Conrad Koh Samui Resort & Spa, Hilton Grand Vacation or certain Partner Accommodations, and it does not apply when a hotel is overbooked by 10% or more, or by 2% or more at certain hotels, or during Extraordinary Demand Dates. [2] The guaranteed 4pm late check-out for Diamond Reserve members excludes certain Partner Accommodations. [2] See guaranteed room.

At Wyndham, redemption requirements vary by property and can be as high as 30,000 points per bedroom, the cash portion of a discounted night varies by property and date, and taxes and resort fees may apply even on free nights, with points unable to pay them; awards remain subject to availability, blackout dates and other restrictions. [3] See resort fee.

Exceptions and limits

  • Whole properties outside the programme. Marriott lists brands and properties that do not participate unless expressly stated, including Bulgari Hotels and Resorts at all locations, City Express Rio de Janeiro Barra da Tijuca, Grand Residences by Marriott in Mayfair-London, the Marriott Conference Centers' Rotary House Hotel in Houston, Marriott Vacation Club at The Empire Place in Bangkok, The Marriott Ranch Bed and Breakfast and The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore. [1]
  • Property exit. If a participating property or brand leaves the programme, members stop earning points and elite night credits there, and awards and offers are no longer valid after the exit date, even if the reservation was made before it. [1]
  • Booking channel. Hilton does not award on-property benefits for reservations booked through non-Hilton-direct channels, opaque websites, third-party packages or ineligible stays, unless the hotel contract includes specific benefits. [2]
  • Events outside the hotel's control. Marriott states that where a participating property is affected by an event beyond reasonable control, applicable benefits, guarantees, awards and services may be modified, suspended, unavailable or ineligible without liability. [1]
  • Region. Marriott's rules include special terms for members with Chinese citizenship residing in the Chinese mainland, which prevail over other provisions in case of conflict. [1] Hilton publishes specific terms for members who regularly reside in the Chinese mainland with citizenship of the People's Republic of China. [2] Where Marriott's English and translated versions differ, the English version governs. [1]
  • Changes. Marriott may update, add, remove or modify the list of participating properties and brands at any time, and Hilton's participating hotels are subject to change without notice. [1] [2]
