FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY

What is a hard landing?

A hard landing is frequent flyer shorthand for the default result of elite requalification: the member does not renew a status tier and, because no soft landing or extension applies, drops to the tier that current qualification rules support. Delta SkyMiles and United MileagePlus both show how that recalculation works in their published terms. [3] [7]

Facts checked: 18 October 2026

Key takeaways

  • A hard landing is the absence of a grace tier: the status that follows a qualification period is the one the member's credited activity supports. [3] [7]
  • Delta SkyMiles recalculates Medallion Status annually on activity in a 1 January to 31 December Qualification Year, and MQD progress is reset rather than rolled over. [3]
  • United gives matched Premier status for a 120-day Challenge Period; if the qualifying targets are missed, that status expires and the member may return to a lower earned Premier level or general member status, at United's sole discretion. [7]
  • A status can also be reduced mid-cycle when the credit behind it is withdrawn, and programme rules allow qualification criteria to change even for status already accumulated. [3] [6]

How does a hard landing work?

Elite tiers are not permanent property. A tier is granted for a defined stretch and then assessed again against the member's activity, and the result of that second assessment is what travellers call the landing. The landing is hard when two things are missing: an interim tier that cushions the drop, and any banking of progress from the period just closed.

It helps to separate the term from the mechanisms that prevent it. A soft landing is a defined grace provision that holds a member above the tier their activity would otherwise support for a set period, while a status extension keeps the existing tier or its expiry date in place. A hard landing is simply what remains when a member's status renewal fails and no grace provision applies.

Because the phrase describes an outcome rather than a published benefit, the operative text is always the programme's own requalification and qualification period terms, and the tier a member actually ends up with should be confirmed against those terms rather than against the shorthand.

How does Delta SkyMiles handle a status that is not renewed?

Delta SkyMiles awards Medallion Status on Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs). Medallion Status is calculated annually on activity during a Qualification Year, which runs from 1 January to 31 December, and Delta states that MQDs earned in a Qualification Year determine qualification for the following Medallion Year. [3] MQDs do not extend or roll over from year to year, and the MQD balance is reset to zero on or about 1 January each calendar year. [3]

For 2026 Medallion Status, Delta lists these MQD thresholds: [3]

MQDs needed to earn toward 2026 Medallion Status
Medallion tierMQDs required
Silver Medallion$5,000 MQDs
Gold Medallion$10,000 MQDs
Platinum Medallion$15,000 MQDs
Diamond Medallion$28,000 MQDs

Because the balance is reset rather than banked, a member has to reach the same threshold again in the next Qualification Year; there is no stored credit from the closed year to fall back on. [3] How far a member falls is a matter of where the new MQD total lands against the table, which is why the general shape of these thresholds matters as much as the annual recalculation — see elite qualification thresholds and status thresholds across major programmes.

Delta also spells out how a status can be reduced to the level its adjusted MQDs support. If an eligible Delta SkyMiles American Express card is cancelled or downgraded to a non-eligible card within 60 days after MQDs are deposited, or within 60 days after the eligible card renewal date, Delta reserves the right to cancel, rescind or void those MQDs or to cancel or downgrade Medallion Status based on the adjusted number of MQDs earned. [3] Where returns, reversals or chargebacks reduce an MQD balance below the threshold of any Medallion tier for the preceding Qualification Year, Delta reserves the right to adjust, remove or suspend Medallion Status. [3]

What happens if a United Premier status match is not completed?

A status match produces a temporary tier, and its expiry is a worked example of the default outcome. Under the 2026 MileagePlus Premier Status Match Challenge, applications are accepted between 8 January and 21 December 2026, and complimentary Premier status lasts for a 120-day Challenge Period starting from the date of the Activating Flight. [7]

Keeping that status beyond the window requires earning Premier qualifying flights (PQF) on flights operated by United or United Express, together with Premier qualifying points (PQP) on those flights or from purchases made with an eligible United Chase credit card during the Challenge Period, with the targets set by the matched level. [7] PQP earned from card purchases count only if they post to the member's account on or after the date of the Activating Flight and on or before the last day of the 120-day Challenge Period, and only the primary cardmember can earn PQP from card purchases that apply to the offer. [7] Basic Economy and base fare tickets earn PQP but do not earn PQF. [7] United states that participation does not guarantee Premier status and that matched status will expire after the Challenge Period unless the matched level, or a higher level, is earned or awarded before the end date. [7]

If the PQF and PQP requirements are not met within the Challenge Period, United says the matched Premier status will expire and the member may be returned to a lower earned Premier level, or to general member status, at United's sole discretion. [7] The drop is therefore to the tier the member has actually earned, not to a nearby courtesy tier.

Exceptions and limits

  • Discretion, not a formula. United's wording is that a member may be returned to a lower earned Premier level or general member status at United's sole discretion, so the outcome is not presented as an automatic tier-by-tier calculation. [7]
  • Corrections have their own triggers. Delta ties its reduction rights to defined events: the card provision applies to a 60-day window after MQDs are deposited or after the eligible card renewal date, and the reversal provision applies when a balance drops below a tier threshold for the preceding Qualification Year. [3]
  • Removed activity. If a member asks to have United flight activity removed from their account so that the offer requirements are no longer met, any status matched or earned through the Status Match offer is removed. [7]
  • Rescinded matches. United reserves the right to rescind a Status Match if, after an audit or investigation, it finds listed conduct such as altered documentation or the use of a broker or agency to submit the request. [7]
  • Rule changes. United states that Premier benefits, conditions of participation and qualification criteria may change at any time with or without notice, even though changes may affect the value of status levels or benefits already accumulated, and that status and benefits do not constitute property of the member. [6]

Frequently asked questions

Do unused qualification credits carry over at Delta?

No. Delta states that MQDs do not extend or roll over from year to year and that the MQD balance is reset to zero on or about 1 January each calendar year, with status calculated annually on activity during the Qualification Year. [3]

Does a United status match guarantee the matched tier?

No. United states that participation does not guarantee Premier status and that matched status expires after the Challenge Period unless the matched level or a higher level is earned or awarded before the end date. [7]

Can United take back a status match after it has been granted?

Yes. United reserves the right to rescind any Status Match granted if, during an audit or investigation, it determines that listed conduct occurred, including altered documentation or the use of a broker or agency to submit the request. [7]

Can qualification criteria change before the next assessment?

United says Premier benefits, conditions of participation and qualification criteria may change at any time with or without notice, even where changes affect the value of status already accumulated. [6]
