FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY
What is lounge access on an upgrade?
Lounge access on an upgrade is the question of whether the lounge entitlement a traveller expects — from a premium cabin, an elite tier or a membership — still applies when the seat was obtained through a complimentary, confirmed or mileage upgrade rather than by paying for the premium cabin. United's programme rules describe upgrade benefits as something attached to Premier status and assessed at the time of travel [6], and its Premier page describes mileage upgrades as a redemption that earns Premier qualifying points on the miles and co-pay spent [8]. The Delta lounges URL cited for this entry returned a 404 error page when checked on 18 October 2026, and the American clubs-and-lounges URL returned only navigation content, so neither page could be used to establish whether lounge access follows an upgrade [2] [3].

Key takeaways
- United's rules group upgrade benefits with other Premier status benefits and assess them at the time of travel [6], and its Premier page treats seat upgrades and MileagePlus Upgrade Awards as mileage redemptions that earn PQP [8]; neither page states that an upgrade on its own grants or removes lounge access [6] [8].
- United lists lounge access among the benefits for which a member must keep the MileagePlus account number on the reservation for the whole journey, and on any later reservation created from it [6].
- United says Premier status benefits, including upgrade benefits, are based on the member's status at the time of travel rather than when the ticket was bought or the upgrade requested [6].
- Delta's lounges URL returned a 404 error page and American's clubs-and-lounges URL returned only navigation content when checked on 18 October 2026, so this entry makes no statement about either carrier's lounge rules [2] [3].
Why the ticketed fare is the reference point
United's rules separate the cabin a member sits in from the fare the member paid: class-of-service bonus miles and Premier Qualifying Credits are credited according to the fare paid, not the cabin flown, and are not credited on any upgrade [6]. That provision is written about mileage and qualifying credit, and the same rules do not extend it to lounge access [6]. The lounge-access provision in those rules works differently: it is a condition about keeping the membership number attached to the reservation rather than about the cabin occupied [6].
That makes the two questions separable in the United document. What an upgrade does to earning is settled in the mileage-accrual section [6], while lounge access appears only in the provision requiring the member to keep the MileagePlus account number on the reservation and on any reservation created from it [6]. The rules do not state what lounge access an upgraded ticket carries, and this entry therefore does not assert one for United and makes no claim about other carriers [6].
Three upgrade routes and what is published
Complimentary, status-driven upgrades. United groups upgrade benefits with bonus miles, Premier Access and baggage allowance as benefits associated with Premier status, and states that those benefits are based on the member's Premier status at the time of travel [6]. The rules do not say that a complimentary upgrade adds lounge entry on its own [6].
Confirmed and paid upgrades. United's rules do not set out a separate lounge rule for confirmed upgrades [6]. They do state that upgrades will not be allowed on some fares or tickets, including special promotional accommodations, rentals, industry discounts, consolidation tickets, group rates and special promotional rates such as PassPlus [6].
Mileage upgrades. United's Premier page treats seat upgrades and MileagePlus Upgrade Awards as redemptions: members earn 1 PQP for every 100 MileagePlus miles redeemed on United and United Express flights and seat upgrades, and a MileagePlus Upgrade Award earns 1 PQP per 100 miles redeemed plus PQP on the cash portion of the co-pay [8]. That page is about earning towards Premier status, and it does not say what a mileage upgrade does to lounge entry [8].
Status, account number and companions
United's rules require a member who receives programme benefits at booking, check-in, travel or another activity — naming premium seating, fee waivers, additional baggage allowance, lounge access and other travel benefits — to keep the MileagePlus account number on the reservation throughout the whole journey and on any later reservation created from the original [6]. The same rules say that if a companion receives benefits through a member's status or other allowance and that member is no longer travelling on the original reservation, the companion loses those benefits [6].
Taken together, the published test for these benefits is the member and the member's status on the day of travel, plus the account number on the booking, rather than the event that produced the better seat [6]. The same rules do not describe a separate test for lounge entry granted on the strength of the cabin alone [6].
Exceptions and limits
- Some fares cannot be upgraded at all. United excludes certain promotional, industry, consolidation, group and rental tickets from upgrades, so an upgrade cannot be the source of lounge entry on those fares [6].
- Award travel and upgrades are treated as different transactions. United's rules exclude award travel, including tickets bought with a combination of miles and money, from earning award miles and Premier Qualifying Credits [6], while its Premier page credits PQP for miles spent on seat upgrades and MileagePlus Upgrade Awards [8]. The sources state these separately and do not describe them as one rule [6] [8].
- Not addressed in the United pages cited: whether a short domestic complimentary upgrade into a premium cabin admits the traveller to a club; whether a certificate issued by an employer or another third party carries entry; and how a partner-operated lounge treats an upgraded boarding pass [6]. Anyone relying on those arrangements should treat them as unconfirmed by these pages.
- Outside this entry. Operational upgrades given at the gate, employee and industry travel and third-party upgrade certificates are not covered by the United pages cited here, so this entry does not describe them [6].
